As of last night, sources indicated that Smoltz was leaning toward Boston's offer which was said to be somewhere in the vicinity of $5.5 million guaranteed with the opportunity to earn a few million in incentives which could hike the salary up to $10 million. The Sox and Smoltz have been talking since before the Winter Meetings. The Sox do not anticipate that Smoltz will be ready until later in May, but one of the incentives being discussed would be a roster bonus if he's with the team by June 1.

Great. Just great. I have been giving FW a long leash, but this might convince me otherwise. Letting Smoltz walk probably doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot to the win total for 09, but, cosmetically, it's a terrible blow.

ESPN has the story up now.

No shocking developments in the story, though there is a little nugget at the end that caught my attention.

Despite the team's record, Cox feels he's still got plenty to offer from the dugout.

"Everybody is used to winning around here," he said. "But I'm probably better now than I've ever been."

I would offer some evidence to the contrary:

Johnson, Kelly (Inane vendetta)
Boyer, Blaine (Appearances)
Francoeur, Jeff (Batting order).

Oh well, I guess the "he gets to retire when he wants" schtick is still legit enough to win over a couple hearts and minds.

Michael Hampton seems to be on the path to starting a game on Saturday. Oh Boy!!!!!111one!

Says he will be replacing JoJo if Bobby decides to go with the man made of glass.

Hopefully Reyes will go down to AAA and learn to keep the ball down.

That being said, the real question is:
How does Mike Hampton get hurt this time?

I vote he trips coming out of the bullpen and lands on a baseball and cracks his sternum. Sound rediculous? With Mike Hampton, nothing is too crazy.
