Here's a rare positive take on Varly. It's good to see somebody take an honest look at the situation, rather than follow suite of the pundits, or simply take the easy guess that next year will be identical to this year.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some folks are letting their imaginations run wild when it comes to Stamkos’ contract situation, claiming he hates Tampa Bay (he doesn’t), or wants out of Tampa Bay (he doesn’t), or wants to play for Toronto (he doesn’t). Funny how all these Stamkos rumors have him going to the Maple Leafs or Flyers, with the Lightning usually getting the crappy end of the deal. And why, in Buddha’s name, would the Penguins want to trade Malkin in a three player deal? What the hell were they possibly going to get from Toronto that would be an adequate replacement? Tim Connolly? Phil Kessel? Clarke MacArthur? Do those rumormongers think Ray Shero has gone insane? Come on, folks, if you’re going to dream up trade scenarios for Stamkos, at least make them based in reality! I’m very, very disappointed in your lack of imagination. In the meantime, the Lightning will continue to work on getting Stamkos re-signed.

I'm not sure why HF is not showing the updated rankings, but here it is from TSN. No surprise to see Huberdeau jump up on the list. That pushes Couturier to #4 and Landeskog to #5.

Mile High Hockey Draft Pool

Draft pool - Just another way to kill some time before the actual draft.

GeorgeInLimbo had a great idea to start a draft pool. So I'm just building off of that by adding scoring so there could definetely be a winner in the end.

GeorgeInLimbo post

I'll pull the selections from that post to start this one off.

Scoring:

Each person starts with 11 points per pick. One point is subtracted for each position off from the relative pick.

Example:

If I pick Landeskog to be drafted at #4, but he really goes at #2, two points will be subtracted from that slot, for being two positions off.

If we do end up with Landeskog, I really hope we get this kid as well. I get the feeling Murphy and Landeskog feed off of each other. Landeskog camps in the net and screens the goalie. Murphy fires a canon, and it either goes in, or Landeskog scoops up the rebound. I suppose that could work with Elliot as well though.

I swear I'm not trying to start another Huber vs X debate. I just ran across this profile at "In Lou We Trust", and I thought is was well done.

Finally I found a decent Couturier compilation. Who says he doesn't hit?

Here's Huberdeau. The kid's got some sick moves.
jonathan-huberdeau

gabriel-landeskog

ryan-nugent-hopkins

ryan-strome I sure would like to see him fall to #11

sven-bartschi Sick one handed move around :39. And is that a head-butt attempt at 2:39? If we end up with him at #11, we could do much worse.

Are the Avs looking at this guy as a possible goalie for next year? I like how's there's mention of him having a great opportunity in Denver. It's remote, I know, but worth a thought.

S Bowman's thoughts on this Larsson kid.

Here's another article that talks about Larsson coming over to play next year, should the drafted team request it. I thought somebody made the statement that he could not, because of his contract or something. However, this article seems to indicate that he can. I know Armia has signed a contract with his current team in Finland for next year. Perhaps that brought on some confusion.

It's nice to see our very own, Joey Hishon, made the OHL first all-star team. I wonder if he's also in-line for MVP... They may have announced the finalist, but I didn't catch it.

I am a little surprised to see that Landeskog didn't make 1st, 2nd or 3rd team, but Strome and Murphy did. Not that those too don't deserve it.

First Team:

Centre – Joey Hishon, Owen Sound Attack (63)
Left Wing – Garrett Wilson, Owen Sound Attack (61)
Right Wing – Tyler Toffoli, Ottawa 67’s (47)
Defence – Ryan Ellis, Windsor Spitfires (91)
Defence – Ryan Murphy, Kitchener Rangers (71)
Goaltender – Mark Visentin, Niagara IceDogs (63)
Coach – Mark Reeds, Owen Sound Attack (60)

Second Team:

Centre – Ryan Strome, Niagara IceDogs (48)
Left Wing – Marcus Foligno, Sudbury Wolves (41)
Right Wing – Jason Akeson, Kitchener Rangers (39)
Defence – Dougie Hamilton, Niagara IceDogs (43)
Defence – Marc Cantin, Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (33)
Goaltender – JP Anderson, Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (59)
Coach – Dave Cameron, Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (56)

Third Team:

Centre – Casey Cizikas, Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (34)
Left Wing – Josh Shalla, Saginaw Spirit (36)
Right Wing – Christian Thomas, Oshawa Generals (35)
Defence – Brett Flemming, Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (30)
Defence – Jesse Blacker, Owen Sound Attack (28)
Goaltender – Petr Mrazek, Ottawa 67’s (24)
Coach – Michael Vellucci, Plymouth Whalers (20)

'He's still a little lean,' McGuire said of Couturier. 'He was predicted to be this monster power forward, of a Lindros ilk, and he isn't … yet. But, if in a year or two he is, God bless the team that drafts him, whether it is No. 1, 2, 3 or 6.'

Let's make that #2, please...

'Mononucleosis is one of those things that the expert medical scouts say it takes a full year to get back from that,' McGuire said. 'Well, if he falls all the way to No. 6, and somebody grabs him and he does recover more fully from his draft year mononucleosis — I mean, they may have the best player in the draft at No. 6.'

I didn't realize it could take a year to recover from mono. I guess it didn't show much with 96 points on the year.

I know that there are many debates on this site surrounding the top forwards in the draft, so I thought you all might find this interesting.

Mile High Hockey RNH vs Landeskog vs Couturier - using weighted statistics

In order to compare RHN, Couturier and Landeskog, I devised a new point-ranking system that assigns various points to specific NHL statistical categories.

score

weight/points

details

goal

2

Even-strength goals have the highest statistical weight

first assist

1.5

First assists are worth more than 2nd, simply because the player was more involved in the actual execution of the goal.

second assist

1

plus

0.5

Only counts when at even strength, and the player was not already awarded the goal or assist.

pp goal

1.5

pp first assist

1

pp second assist

0.5

Minus

0.5

Only counted if the goal was scored during even strength.

Here's an example of how I captured one day of data, for a given player.

G

A1

A2

Plus

PPG

PPA1

PPA2

Minus

24-Sep

1

1

1

-1

In this example, the player scored a goal at even strength. They were on the ice for another even-strength goal and again while an even-strength goal was scored against their team. They also had a second assist on the power play. If they were on the ice for any other goal during a PP, I didn't count it as a plus or a minus.

I captured these statistic for each game a player played and then totaled each column. I multiplied each total by the statistical point score, defined above. Next, I added all the points for that player and divided it by the number of games they played, to get the new points-per-game stat.

Assuming we get the Blues pick, I hope the Avs are taking a serious look at this kid. He's making full-grown men defenders look stupid. Defender in front of him, no problem, skate right through him. Defender goes down to block a shot, no problem, get it over and into the net.

It would make sense that the Avs have a good feel for Cogliano because when they where watching Hensick play, they also got to see Porter and Cogliano.

• A broken foot early in the 2009-10 season limited Hishon to just 36 games and 40 points (16-24--40) – he broke his foot blocking a slap shot against Niagara, but still managed to score the game-winning goal .

• In 2008-09, he led Owen Sound in goals (37), assists (44) and points (81) and was voted the Best Playmaker and Best Stickhandler in the OHL’s Western Conference by the league’s coaches -- in the playmaking category he beat out Ryan O'Reilly (COL, 33rd overall in 2009) and John Tavares (NYI, 1st overall in 2009) and in the stickhandling category he beat out Nazem Kadri (TOR, 7th overall in 2009) for the award.

• Hishon represented Team Canada at the 2009 Under-18 World Championships and was the leading scorer (5-5--10) for Canada at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial. He also was named to Team Ontario at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

• He joined up with a local company in Owen Sound to create ‘Hishon for Hodgkins’ in which a donation is made to the Canadian Cancer Society for every goal ($100) and assist ($50) that he collects during home games.

• A Stratford Warriors minor hockey product, he got his start at the age of four skating at the local rink where his father worked and he wears jersey number four because his father and uncles wore that number.

Mile High Hockey THN Ranks Avs #1 at Draft Table

Check out the Hockey News Future Watch 2010. They ranked the Avs #1 at the draft table. I've summarized the article below as it relates to the Avalanche. However, to get more information, you may want to pick up a copy.

**************************

The chart below represents how teams have been performing at the draft table for the past four seasons. The plus-minus figure is the amount above or below the norm for that particular team in comparison to it's NHL peers.

Overall grade
1. Colorado - ADR: 18 - Rnk: 3 (+15)
2. Atlanta - ADR: 19 - Rnk: 9 (+10)
3. NY Rangers - ADR: 13 - Rnk: 5 (+8)
4. Montreal - ADR: 23 -  Rnk: 16 (+7)
5. Nashville - ADR: 20 Rnk: 14 (+6)
6. NY Islanders - ADR: 14 - Rnk 8 (+6)
...

Colorado has gone to the draft table 18th overall,on average, the past four seasons. Yet it's report card grade is third overall (below) for a difference of plus-15. That's a credit to the scouting department that has unearthed some pretty good selections (Duchene, O'Reilly, Galiardi, Shattenkirk, Stoa, Cohen, Elliot, Barrie and Gaunce).

Report card grade:
1. L.A. - grade '09: A - grade '10: A
2. St. Louis - grade '09: A- - grade: '10: A
3. Colorado - grade '09: C - grade: '10: A-
...

The report card grade shows the strength of each team's list of top 10 propects and 21-and-under NHLers, the missions statement behind Future Watch. A panel of 23 scouts - one scout from each team was invited to participate - did the grading.

Mile High Hockey O'Reilly, poor man's Duchene?

The more I hear about O'Reilly, the more I think that this kid is very underated. In most draft years, he would be close to our first pick overall because this is where we usually draft.

I found that it interesting that O'Reilly was drafted before Taylor Hall and Matt Duchene in the OHL draft.

2007 OHL Priority Selection Concluded
1. Ryan O'Reilly
2. Taylor Hall
3. Casey Cizikas
4. Zack Kassian
5. Matthew Duchene

Of course, Duchene and Hall's stock did rise while O'Reilly's fell. However, Hall and Duchene both played on good teams while O'Reilly did not.

NHL Draft Combine:

TSN - O'Reilly Impressive at Combine May 30, 2009
NHL Central Scouting 39th-ranked Ryan O'Reilly of the Erie Otters had a fantastic workout, excelling in everything - he had a good vertical, he was solid on the bike, great on the bench press and seems overall to have more of a mature body than most of the other players in attendance. He is physically stronger than the vast majority of players that have been seen. His 18 reps at 150 pounds on the bench press tied for the most among the 94 players who tested.

Sherry Bassin speaks very highly of him, who is widely regarded as one of the top hockey minds in the world. Bassin has won at every level of hockey, including the 1993 Memorial Cup with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League and two gold medals with the Canadian World Junior Team (1982 and 1985). He is also a two-time recipient of the OHL and CHL Executive-of-the-Year Awards (in 1990-91 while with the Greyhounds and in 2001-2002 with the Otters). He's seen a lot of serious talent play their way through his various squads.

Quotes from Bassin about O'Reilly:
"He's a special player. He's nowhere near the level he's going to be. He really accepts the challenge of getting better. He really believes in the team winning, not himself. I haven't had a kid that's so focused on preparation and just working on getting better. He's got such a work ethic you almost have to pull him away. We always talk about the will to prepare -- well, he's got a phenomenal will to prepare. The people that pass him up in the draft at the appropriate spot will regret they passed him up. We've just seen the tip of the iceberg on this guy."

Canada's National Junior Team Development camp:
O’Reilly led all skaters with four points (2g/2a) in two scrimmages over the weekend at Canada’s National Junior Team Development Camp in Saskatoon, Sask. Matt Duchene did not get on the score sheet (except for a shootout goal). O'Reilly has been a standout in a group of awesome Canadian talent.

I see him as a potential top 6 forward for the Avs in 2-3 years (hopefully sooner). If he winds up being a third line center he'll still log a lot of ice time on special teams. I'm not trying to make a case that he's better than Duchene but it seems that he's underrated because he's in the shadow of him.

Mile High Hockey Another take on the 08/09 statistics

I think I need to point out that there is a major flaw in the widely-accepted NHL offensive statistics used today. Goals, assists and points do not take into consideration the amount of time spent on the ice. Because of this, I created a spreadsheet that will show goals and points per hour as it relates to the total time spent on the ice (TTOI) within the year. The first chart is sorted by goals per hour while the second is points per hour. I found it interesting that Stewart had more goals per hour than anybody else on the squad. Galliardi is also interesting but because he didn't play much it's hard to say if he could really keep it up over the course of a year.

Player Games played ATOI (mins) TTOI (hours) Goals Assists Points Goals per hour Points per hour

Mile High Hockey Avalanche goal scoring leaders 2009/2010

Because I've been so bored of the hockey news lately, I thought I would take a stab at the Avalanche scoring leaders for next year. First I had to make a guess on who would be on the team. Next, I looked at previous years stats for all players that have played in the NHL and tried to make a guess on what that player would be capable of next year. It was much more difficult to guess on the potential rookies so I tried to be conservative. I'm assuming that the team will be more successful under Sacco and that's why I believe there will be some personal improvements. So, this is the best possible scenario in my opinion.

35 stastny
35 hejduk
20 wolski
20 stewart
20 svatos
15 jones
15 mcleod
15 galiardi
12 liles
10 haydar
10 duchene
10 stoa
10 tucker
8 Hensick
8 quincy
5 clark
5 salei
5 preissing
4 hannan
2 foote
2 cumiskey

Total 266

If this were to happen in 2008/2009, we would be 4th in goals for the NHL. However, if we can't keep the pucks out of our own net, it wouldn't help much in the standings. I know that there will be huge disagreements on this so I would be very interested in seeing other complete guesses.
