Avs 3 Stars 0; some postgame speculations
Yup, so I hit up my first Avalanche game of the season, and had a lot of fun. Despite trying to describe who the new players were to my grandma, I got a pretty good feel for the game and how our boys were doing out there. [Ed's note: the Avs won 3-0 with O'Reilly scoring a pair and Stoa notching the other and J.S. Giguere turning away 16 for the shuotout).
But, before we start puffing ourselves up too much, I want you guys to know that the squad that Dallas fielded (iced?) was plain bad. They were no where near a match for 75% NHL starters, including our string of awesome centers. For perspective, Galiardi would have been the best guy on their team tonight, and he was like fifth best on the Avs. Yes, we had some good play out there, but I never worried whenever a Star would bring the puck into our zone; nor would I be even slightly concerned on a PK. The opposition was just that bad.
Training Camp, day 3 and Wrap-up
Yup, so I know I'm late and all, but I figured I would go ahead and do this anyway. I haven't read AJ's yet, nor any of the other posters. I don't even know what happened in the Burgundy and White game last night, or if anyone was cut today. So, this is about as free from outside pressure as I can be, and lets see how my thoughts stack up against some of the other dudes/ladies.
As always, more after the jump!
Edit: Mein Gott, this has turned into another novel. Sorry. If you ask questions, comment, and I'll answer and stuff.
Training camp, day 2
I stayed for the whole time today, and it was a lot of fun. Everyone seemed more grounded; they worked pretty damn hard out there on the ice. With the roster still uncertain and a lot of guys competing for a spot, I don't think any of the 'lower' guys are going to let up.
Also, first row means no one in front of us! Huzzah!

Training camp, day 1
Well, I went. And I had a good time. At the expense of Foppa Opening Night tickets, which I did NOT get. I has many sads, and possibly some mads at me. Oh well. Dammit.
Enough about that crap, now on to what I am sure you all are craving: Info on the superawesome scrimmages I witnessed today!

Final notes: Rookie Camp, day 3
Sorry, I know this is pretty late in the grand scheme of things. I am off to Training Camp tomorrow morning, and I will likely have some more stuff to type up after that. But I figured I would share some last-minutes things with you guys.
Some Rookie Camp Day 2 notes
I only stayed for the camp itself, and didn't get to witness the scrimmage, but it was still a fun day to see some progression. I don't have many more thoughts to add to yesterday, but Ill throw some out there.
Some more thoughts on Rookie Camp
I haven't read AJ's post yet, because I didn't want mine to be tainted with his strange ideas. Dario's tweets, either. However, since we sat next to each other at camp, watched the same drills, and shared the same conversation, I suspect that our take-aways will be quite similar.
Since the scrimmages we saw were basically pick-up games with really good dudes, I just plan on spewing some of my overall impressions of the kiddies, as well as how some of the vets performed on the ice. I'll probably be back both tomorrow and Thursday too, so I will likely be back to write more of the same styled impressions about the youngsters. Here are my notes, in the order that I wrote them, and probably [edit: definitely. sorry.] with some terribly confusing tense-switches:

Hopes for the upcoming year?
Hi gang. I started writing this in response to one of Randy's comments in one of the awesome Roundtable discussions, but I decided to flip it over here instead. Its coming up onto the real start of the season; very soon we will be getting juicy info on our bunch of rookies, analysis of the vets, and start to watch our team form into the 2011-12 season.
Randy's post was simple, and it was at the end of Roundtable 6: George and Weezy -
This team is full of so many ifs. Here’s hoping last season pissed enough of the guys off that they come out playing with massive chips on their shoulders. E.J. needs to be that #1 D we hope he can be. I’m still excited about this team, lots of talent in the ranks and full of youth. Can’t wait for the season to start.
Naturally, being me, I jumped in and started thinking about all the 'ifs' that I hope to see this season. I started by copying Randy's style and making his hopes sound prettier, but it didn't take long for me to really start wondering what I want to see.
Anyway, here are some of my hopes, wishes, and dreams for the upcoming season, and hope that some of you will grace us with yours!

Summer Doldrums, prt 4
A-Line A-mazing, by Randy Holtz, RMN, Friday, May 25, 2001.
Byline: Since falling behind the Leafs 3-2, Devil's top line has been a goal-scoring machine.
Summer Doldrums, prt 3
Continuation of the last article. Instead of trying to re-create the charts, I just took a close-up photo of them so they can be read on here. I hope. If that doesn't work well, I will edit this post and add some real charts.
Next article: A-Line A-mazing, by Randy Holtz, concerning the Devil's potent top line.
Summer Doldrums, prt 2
Part one of today's article comes to you from Jim Benton, and is entitled Avs-Devils: The Matchups. It was placed on page 6N. It covers various matchups of the forwards, defense, special teams, coaching, and goaltending, and includes predictions about who will win the series. Part two of this article, including charts (assuming I can figure out how to make them, or maybe just scan them), will be coming tomorrow or Friday. Or later, you impatient crybabies.
More after the jump.
Summer Doldrums, prt 1
The worst part of the off-season is upon us. I figured I would try to try to keep some of us entertained the same way that I have been entertaining myself over the past few days: Nostalgia.
I have a cabin up in the mountains full of old stuff. I have been spending a lot of time up there this summer to escape the heat and get away from it all. One of the things up there is a wood-burning fireplace that we hardly use. I was futzing around up there, scotch in hand, and saw something interesting poking out of the metal box in which we store newspaper to fuel that fireplace. I pulled the paper, smoothed it out, and was greeted with this:

Time to move on
I have been struggling with this topic for a while now, but with Foote announcing his retirement on Friday, I figured I may as well jot some thoughts down to share you guys and gals.
The Avs have been clinging to the past for years now, and I feel that, this upcoming year, they will finally be able to move on. The Avalanche, from the time that they moved from Quebec to Denver, have been the city's most dependably awesome team. They had a few ups and downs, and some significant problems stemming from the team's salary management and the implementation of the salary cap, but overall they were always solid. Better than solid: Great.
Over the past 4-5 seasons, as mismanagement and other issues affected team play, the shadow of the 8 year Avs dynasty would be constantly hovering over everyone's shoulder. Management only reinforced this at every turn. In a lot of respects, I have no problem with that; tradition and paying homage to the greats are important to the fanbase of a franchise. However, in this instance, I feel like it has hampered the growth of the team significantly over the past few years.
An Early look at the Av's Cap Issues for 2011-12
Hey guys and gals! This started out as a fairly brief preview of where the Avs are currently sitting for 2011-12 season, but I sorta didn't stop writing, and now its long. Its still early, but since so many of us (mostly me) want to forget about whats going on on the ice right now, I figured I would take a look at where we are in relation to this current year's cap clinging ways.
All numbers have been taken from Capgeek.com, with a healthy amount of my own ridiculous opinion thrown in. Enjoy more after the jump!

Craig Anderson Offered Contract
"Anderson, who turned down $7.5 million over two years with the Colorado Avalanche, was offered two years at $4 million per season by the Sens."
Thats really all you need to know. Not much of a raise from the Av's offer, but maybe by now he will realize that he's not going to get anything better. I wonder how he will respond. Perhaps he will turn it down and ask for more years at a lesser amount. More likely, now that the Sens have put it out into public, he will accept it. Or, hell, he may go on and test Free Agency. Lets see how far that gets him.
This story has a point, I promise.
I didn't comment on MHH at all on Monday. Well, maybe once or twice, but I didnt contribute anything. Or give homage and thanks. Or complain about the defense, or ask where we go from here. I just sat by and watched, with that dull feeling in my stomach.

Forsberg to sign contract today
Forsberg to sign contract today, won't play tomorrow. Details to come, I guess.
*Edit - The Denver Post has a quick blurb on it, only very slightly more substantial than the tweet (twitter?).
** More Edit: Contract has been signed already, according to Dater's Twitter. No details on money yet.
*** Money Edit: According to Daters Twitter, contract is for $1 million prorated, this season only. My oh my, has there ever been a better awesomeness/price ratio?
St. Louis Blues sign Marek Svatos
Horray! I hope things work out well for him there!
Forsberg's Comeback Over
"Forsberg has told his pal Markus Naslund, the GM/owner of MoDo, the longtime team from Sweden he and Forsberg have been involved with, that he’s abandoning his latest comeback attempt to play pro hockey. The foot, alas, just wasn’t good enough. Again."
NHL names Duchene and Fleischmann as top 2 stars
Matt Duchene and Tomas Fleischmann were named the top two of the three starts of the week on NHL.com. Link to the All Access video feed.
So, Where will Flash fit in?
Tomas Fleischmann missed the last game against the Atlanta Thrashers, arriving in Denver just too late to make it to his first game in a Unipron. But that didn't stop me from wondering where he would play. I have seen a bunch of speculation across the various multitude of threads over the last couple of days, but I wanted to put something up so that people could chime in with their thoughts. A couple more of my own after the jump!
Western Conference Man-Games Lost to Injury
Recently Edited, check the bottom of the page please.
Just a quick look at the Western Conference and how many man-games they have lost to injury. Take a wild guess where the Avs rank.
I couldn't find any websites that specifically track this stat, so I had to improvise a bit. I went through NHL.com and checked the roster of each club for players on the IR. Please note that these lists are therefor incomplete, since they do not take into account players that miss games with injuries but are not placed on the IR. Examples of this are Avalanche players Jones and Wilson, neither of whom were placed on the IR, but are still out injured.
I did include these stats for the Avs because, well, I knew them. I could have figured it out for all the other team by manually checking the player statistics for every player on every team, but... yeah, not so much. This should give us a rough idea of where we stand.
Avalanche point-per-game players
I don't feel like working, and so I figured I would write down some things that I noticed while I was perusing the stats on players with at least a point per game. I'm don't really plan on drawing any conclusions, and I expect to ramble a good deal, but I will share some of my observations with you guys / ladies anyway.

A question about NHL Gamecenter Live
Just hoping for some input from those that might already have NHL Gamecenter Live.
Radar's Summer Plans
NHL.com article about how the Avs other stud center is spending his off time, and getting his mind right for his second NHL season. He stayed at Joey Hishon's house and has been skating with him, and daily workouts. I like this kid a lot too. Isn't it nice to have such a likable team?
Biggest Hockey Brawls, according to some fool
Dear dude/lady who created this list:
Altho its not a terrible list, you do not lend yourself credibility by making not one, or two, but THREE mistakes in the caption of the first video. I can understand messing up which teams employ Darcy Tucker and Jarrko Ruutu, as long as you are just looking at some stats on paper. But the video of them is RIGHT FRIGGIN ABOVE THE CAPTION. Anyone who fails to identify the teams the players are on by watching the video ought not to be compiling lists that make the front page of Digg. There may be a ton more mistakes, but I didn't really read any more captions, deeming them unworthy to take up time on my lazy Sunday afternoon.
love, matt

Training Camp Day 3 - Now with video Goodness!
Hey Guys! Camp finished up with a good scrimmage and a bunch of MHHers and Blueline guys. It was great to meet people that I have only ever seen on here!
I changed up a bit today and decided to share some video with you guys as well as some player breakdowns. I didn't pay as much attention to the game as I would have usually, so I had to rely on the Av's breakdown of the game [altho I did notice some inconsistencies with my videos, but whatev]. I have some info and I am posting up 15 video clips. I took about 30, but some of them were rubbish and I trashed them. More after the jump!
