Bloody Elbow Why Each Top Heavyweight is the Best in the Division AND Why They Suck

Howdy folks, basically what i'm doing here is listing all the top heavyweights and why they can make a claim for being the best in the world and why they'll prove it in the upcoming year, and why there is also a reason to believe they totally suck. The future of the Heavyweight division is totally cloudy, but still exciting as shit.  To make this easier on myself (and to avoid the ruthless Frank Mir hate) I'm gonna focus on the 2 top UFC guys who are duking it out this fall for the belt, and the surviving SF grand prix members, where hopefully the next UFC number #1 contender comes from.

I'm shameless ripping this concept off from a gamesradar article about the Final Fantasy series (correct answers to that one are VII, IX, and XIII are the best, and XII and VIII suck ass).

Cain Velasquez

Cain-velasquez_medium

via www.drysdalejiujitsu.com

Why hes the best: Two words here, wrestling and cardio.  As we all know the most important base to have in mma is wrestling, and at heavyweight the argument can be made that there is noone better than our boy Cain.  His credentials are damn impressive but to top it off he possesses something that is absolutely crucial at hw, cardio.  Cain doesnt gas, ever. He hit Ben Rothwell with like a thousand punches and didnt even break a sweat. Brock Lesnar couldn't stand against his furious assault along with every other opponent Cain has faced.  Couple that together with newly found power punching and we have arguably the most complete and dangerous fighter in the heavyweight division, oh yea and hes already the champ.

Why he sucks: I cant get the images out of my head of Kongo dropping him. Cain leaves his chin out in every fight and against certain guys in this division we could see him getting decapitated. His biggest wins are when he beat Nog over the head with his walker and when he kicked Brock Lesnar into retirement, and what level were those guys even at when he beat them? Hes only 9-0 and is still one of the most unproven guys in the division. Also he's still pillowfisted, i mean the guy hit Rothwell with literally a thousand punches and Big Ben was still conscious, and knocking out a fake fighter with a glass jaw, and the oldest 34 year old to ever live doesn't change my opinion on his power.

Junior Dos Santos

Junior-dos-santos_medium

via www.cagedinsider.com

Why hes the Best: The hottest fighter in the division right now 7-0 in the UFC with each win coming by pure domination. Powerful boxing, takedown defense for days, and solid cardio all at ripe old age of 26 makes me think we could see this guy on the top for years.  Junior is a scary matchup for any fighter and can end a fight with the blink of an eye.  A brown belt from the Nogueira brothers also hints at a dangerous jiu-jitsu game that's yet to be seen, but those thunderous takedowns Junior landed against Carwin show hes no new comer to the ground game.

Why he sucks : Junior's a great striker, but the days of one sided mma fighters are over.  We've never seen this guy on the ground before so it can be easy to assume hes hiding something. Plus while hes 7-0 in the UFC it wasnt exactly against the toughest of competition, He beat Carwin off a bad back surgery and a years ring rust, Roy Nelson hasnt looked good in awhile, Stefan Struve seems to enjoy getting ko'd, and Gilbert Yvel hasnt exactly been a world beater. Junior has also showed signs of gassing out, he wasnt exactly fresh in the 2nd and 3rd rounds against Carwin and Nelson and when he gets tired he likes keeping his hands at his waist, which not exactly the best idea in a division where everyone has power in their hands.

Alistair Overeem

20100517120048_img_0328_jpg_medium

via cdn1.sbnation.com

Why hes the best : While last night might not exactly have been the best of performances, you cannot blame Overeem for that. Werdum didnt wanna fight Alistair and just kept flopping on his back the entire fight. I mean look how good Anderson Silva looked when he had to deal with Thales Leites doing that to him.  Overeem still displayed he has many dangerous aspects to his game. Werdum literally crumbled under Overeems strikes, Overeem throws with immense power with every strike and can sap an opponents will with a single one of his patented Uber knees. Alistair also tossed Werdum around the cage last night pretty much showing off his 40 lbs of whoop ass and that they arent going to waste.  Hes still gotta be the favorite to win the Strikeforce Tournament.

Why he Sucks : That guy last night is considered to be the best fighter in the world? I hope to god he has a good excuse for that performance because all i saw was a bigger version of the guy who got knocked out by Chuck Liddell.  Overeem's a great can crusher, but he proved again that if you stand in his face and give him hell he folds.  He got hit early and often and gassed out from defending takedowns.  People are saying Werdum, a jiu jitsu expert who has been classified as one sided many times, should have kept the fight standing against a guy who is proclaimed as the greatest striker in mma. Hard to see Alistair winning the entire Tournament and taking the UFC belt

Bigfoot Silva

Bfootx-wide-community_medium

via i.usatoday.net

Why hes the best: The destroyer of Fedor is the last gargantuan heavyweight left in the title hunt.  He's an absolutely massive and strong man who possesses a very tight and complete mma game.  His boxing is dangerous and powerful and he's a legit bjj black belt.  Also is there a more dangerous spot to be in mma then on the bottom of Bigfoot's suffocating and destructive mount?  Bigfoot's finished his last two fights there in absolutely brutal fashion.  Throw an iron chin and good cardio into this beast of a fighter and you have a guy who has to be the favorite to take the Strikeforce tournament and UFC belt.

Why he sucks: When i see Bigfoot, i see a big and hulking man, who unfortunately doesn't have the athleticism to compete with the top dogs at heavyweight.  Sure he beat an old and undersized Fedor, but this is also the guy who nearly got ktfo'd by a light heavyweight in Mike Kyle. Bigfoot hasn't beaten a true top dog at heavyweight in his entire career.  Expect him to get lit up against Overeem in the next round and dwell in mediocrity in the UFC hw division for the rest of his career going .500 against the Mike Russow, Ben Rothwell, and Stefan Struves of the world.

Josh Barnett

Josh-barnett-2_medium

via mmatrainingworkoutsonline.com

Why hes the best: As a newly converted fan of the Baby Faced Assassin, I believe we will see the most experienced top guy in the division run through the rest of the competition he faces in the tournament.  Josh has an excellent all around game and further proves the effectiveness of catch wrestling in mma.  The guy has been undefeated for nearly 5 years and has more experience than any guy in the entire division.  Josh is a proven commidity in a division full of young inexperienced fighters who mostly havent been pushed to their limits.

Why he sucks: Lets be serious here, Barnett hasn't beaten a top heavyweight since 2006 and a win over Brett Rogers does nothing to change that.  While hes experienced, hes also a product of a different age in mma and his contemporaries like Nog, Fedor, Cro Cop and Couture aren't exactly lighting up the division anymore.  The game has passed Josh Barnett and i expect him to get brutalized in the rest of the tournament and eventually follow the Jens Pulver route headlining Shark Fights 40 a few years from now.

Sergei Kharitonov

039_sergei_kharitonov_vs_andrei_arlovski_medium

via www.rawstateclothing.com

Why hes the best: Nobody looked better than Kharitonov in the first round of the tournament in the way he dispatched a remotivated Andrei Arlovski.  The guys been around the game forever yet is only 30 years old and is truly hitting his stride as a martial artist.  Sergei has been in big fights in the past before and is staying active in his career taking fights outside of the tournament recently beating Mighty Mo in a kickboxing match.  With the big power he possesses in his hands and crisp striking he has favorable odds to take out the field in SF and grab the UFC belt in the process

Why he sucks: Kharitonov was mediocre in Pride, mediocre in Dream and is mediocre now. He's slllllllloooooowwwwwwwwwwww as hell and might as well act as target practice to the faster strikers in the division like JDS and Cain.  The argument can be made that he deserved a spot in the tournament less than anyone besides Brett Rogers and I don't even see him cutting it in the UFC when the two promotions eventually merge. His knockout of Arlovski was nice but him helps your career out almost as much as beating Tito Ortiz, they both used to be good but have since gone crazy and haven't won a fight in a combined decade.

Bloody Elbow UFC fight night 24, a night of failed expectations

Last night we got treated to roughly 2 hours of commercials with a couple of fights in between.  Apparently the west coast had to watch the fights on tape delay as well, which brings me to my first point that the UFC needs  to be done with Spike tv.  Spike was nice to get a start with and bring mma to the public eye, and while they basically allow the UFC free reign, they need to go for several reasons.

The fact that only 4 fights were shown in a 2 and a half hour block is something of a travesty, Johny Hendricks had the knockout of the night in a roughly 2 minute affair, but we didnt get to see that because it was more important for me to see a 20 minute consecutive block of commercials advertising movies that i'll never see.The fact that quality fighters aren't being brought onto TUF because either they don't speak English or they don't have a "reality tv personality" is a complete sin as well.

Spike is like the the girlfriend you left at home when you went to college. When your lead in is 1000 ways to Die, the writing might be on the wall as far as your relationship is concerned.  The UFC needs to dump her ass and move on to bigger and better things. (wouldn't ESPN be nice)

Bloody Elbow Milk's new drunken rant of the week (2/24)

What up bitches.. sorry abot not posting last weekend, got a tad too drunk..... i know how much i was missed... anyway fedor lost and it started some shit

lets get this straight rankings are fucking stupid in mma... like really reallt stupid. it doesnt matter if u think alistair overeem or bigfoot silva is #1, cain velasquez has the only belt that matters, we all know every other belt from an mma org is a bit of a joke and doesnt really matter at this point in histroy compared the UFC hw belt, or any other divison belt

but lets get back to the really entertaining SF card andrei should retire, i'd like to see del rosario fight mitrione, and bigfoot is bigger and stronger than a star who hasnt been in his prime for years

UFC 127 is the big card of the weekend, bj penn vs jon fitch, i think fitch tries to clinch him and get his ass to the mat, but somehow wont get him down. and bj takes advantage and slaps on a sub. it wont make sense, and we'll all be shocked, but somehow i see it happening

and sot vs siver, (i know theres another co main, but fuckem) very easy to call, siver is slower than sot. he finds himself on his ass quick and gets choked the fuck out. people are realy overrating siver, hes not good enough to take sot out before the mat hits the ground

rivera takes out bispings overrated and cocky ass, ko 2nd round hendo style

and who cares about the rest of the card... honestly its not that great, i wanna see gustaffsson win, fukuda vs ring is interesting but overall it kinda sucks really bad. god damn foreigners

and anyway, rogan and bas had a fucking amazing podcast with some goddamn amazing bas stoires, florians fighting diego munes and might get his ass kicked missing his fucking left leg, and thiago silva was popping roids to whoop vera's ass (did he really need it?). barnett is fucking up the SF tournament, which i actually got into and believed would happen. so right now i couldnt wish a violent enough death upon him

and i'm gonna go do some shit so pce BE, bobby lashley sucks as an interview and a fighter

Bloody Elbow Milk's drunken rant of the week

whats up bitches, gonna try and make this a weekly feature, and hell my alcohol consumptuon makes it a possibility.

anyway though lets recap the week that was, so anderson silva kicked the living fuck outta vitor. my thoughts on this are simple, everyone was begging for vitor to come out and blitz him but what the fuck did we expect from someone a year and 3 months (rough estimate) outta the cage???? vitor had ring rust like a motherfucker and therefore suffered a career defining knockout. dont ever expect to see the vitor who ktfo'd lindland ever againn

forrest beat franklin...... and thats about as much as i'm gonna say about it, he was bigger, stronger and just as average (not in a overall career sense, but in a right the fuck now sense)

jonny bones jones has the possibilities to be the michael jordan of mma. and by that i mean the jesus. he can be our savior, the kid is cocky, hungry, agressive, and strives to be the best.  i couldn't ask for anything more than what tony kornheiser loosly quoted as what mma needs to become mainstream "a charismatic guy who keeps winning to garner the mainstream fans attention".

he handled ryan bader like noone ever had before, jones has strength, balls and the it factor. the kid is fuckinf interesting and i'm on his dick like madonna on every single guy in the 80's

fedor fights bigfoot.  i have a simple prediction, fedor beats the living shit outta him, bigfoots skull beats the living shit outta fedor's hand. bigfoots skull has beaten some damn good opponents' hands before, werdum (i think) kyle (i know) and others that i dont feel like looking up.

kharitonov vs arlovski is a simple prediction, if headcase andrei shows up the slow as shit sergei knocks him the fuck out. if a decently sane andrei shows up, he wins. someone on BE radio said this and i agree, we'll know within a minute or so

chad griggs is fighting someone but i dont give a fuck, and valentijjjn overreem is fighting the striking coach from xtreme couture.

honestly who cares who wins, this whole card is about fedor and whats left of arlovski's mind

BE radio was a fucking success, subo isnt pronounced the way i thought and he argues better while talking then while typing. snowden loses the first round 10-9 (it as close to a goddamn 10-8)

and thats it, i'm out bitches parties are calling and i'm 19 and gotta do what i gotta do, u stay real BE (and whatever site's are lucky enough/unfortunate enough to have me repost this)

GSP vs anderson is the greatest fight in mma history.... fuck u guys who are bitching about it and asking for okami, that is stupidity in a fucking nutshell (yushin can suck my balls, being the greatest of all time at ww is better than being 3-1 at mw in your past 4) the hate agaisnt this fight just proves that mma fans cant have nice things, be more like giants/philadelphia fans and count your god damn blessings. btw i hate everyone/everything from philly

Bloody Elbow What to do with the TUF 12 fighters

Well its over guys, another season of the beloved show The Ultimate Fighter has ended with a spectacular finale and a full cast of tough and hungry fighters coming to take the UFC 155 division by storm.

Wee as we all know thats not seriously the case, once again we had a pretty lackluster season of a dying show topped off by a pretty lackluster card and a bunch of guys who dont't seem ready at all to compete in the UFC.  That being said i'm predicting that 6 of these guys are gonna stick around at least for another fight in the premier promotion in the world with them being Nam Phan, Michael Johnson, Cody Mckenzie, Bruce Leroy, Kyle Watson and of course Jonathan Brookins. now as some of u guys know i love playing matchmaker and have some pretty nice ideas on where these guys should go from here.

Bloody Elbow Will MMA survive if it's biggest stars keep losing?

That was the headline on Pardon the Interuption on ESPN today when they devoted a whole 60 seconds to talking about one of the biggest sporting events this past weekend.  The PTI guys unabashadly hate on mma and have never ever given it a fair chance, which is a fair representative on how the sport is recieved by the major media.  Check your local newpapers sunday edition and i dare you to find any coverage of UFC 121, there will be little if any.

Now lets change the focus of this post for a bit, my college roommate, lets call him Mike, is the quintessential 50 year old upper middle class, white, sports fan in a 19 year old body. Mike is a Colts fan, and Yankees fan, occasionally watches NBA basketball rooting for Lebron, and never watches hockey.  Mike also claims to be a boxing fan, saying he'd watch more if everything wasnt on ppv.

Now when it comes to MMA Mike absolutely doesnt give a flying fuck. He sees it as a brutal ripoff of boxing that simply doesnt compare to the excitement of a boxing match.  I tried for an extended period of time to get him to at least respect the sport, showing him a collection of great fights from slugfests like Griffin-Bonnar to beatdowns like Silva-Griffen, and even high level grappling matches like Diaz vs Sanchez. Mike still claims to find it boring and whenever i watch a fight and a takedown happens states "It looks like they're trying to have sex"

Now Mike is an ignorant dumbass this can easily be agreed upon. And how does any of this matter? Because ignorant dumbasses exactly like Mike run all of the mainstream sports coverage and as long as they are alive and in power will never ever give mma its due.  The top thing talked about on ESPN about the UFC event was Brock losing and the Undertaker saying to him "You Wanna Go".   This Video from Colin Cowherd over at ESPN Radio in his interview with Tito Ortiz sums it pretty nicely

UFC 121: TITO ORTIZ on ESPNRADIO w/Cowherd (via ncaasteve)

Now I'm not sure that I can exactly agree with Cowherd that more 18-34 year olds watched the UFC then MLB playoffs (but I am in the center of Phillies and Yankees territory so my opinion will be biased cause everyone here gives a fuck) but his point is still extremely strong, MMA is a mainstream sport.  Its been for a little while and it was a slow and hard process getting there. Its time for the Mainstream media to stop being ignorant dumbasses like my ignorant dumbass roommate and get with the picture and give this amazing sport the coverage it deserves

Bloody Elbow the catchweight superfights i wanna see that will more than likely never happen

the idea of catchweight superfights between fighters of various divisions is an interesting one, its beneficial to fighters to simply stick to their weight class of choice instead of taking a potentially entertaining fight at a weight class with no belt and with no long term benefits, rich franklin showed this by going 1-1 at franklinweight and having it put him no higher in either middleweight or lightheavyweight

however there are many many interesting fights out there though between fighters of various weight classes that we'll never see happen though due to this, so lets pretend this is a perfect world and all of these fights are gonna happen and for 5 rnds

1. Frankie Edgar vs Jose Aldo (150lb catchweight) - i think stylistically this fight has all the potential to be a fight of the year, Aldo might possibly be the only fighter who can match Edgars speed who doesnt weight 135 lbs and it'd be interesting to see how Edgar's striking would fare against a guy like Aldo who hasnt ever been touched at fw

Edgar probably enters the fight with superior grappling base having escaped the clutches of bj penns back control unscathed and even taking down the notoriously hard to take down penn, but Aldo is no joke on the ground with a high level blackbelt and some dominanting moments on the ground against mike brown, overall the fight is enormously interesting and ill call the upset and say Aldo wins via decision

2. Gray Maynard vs Jon Fitch (165 lbs, and unlimited rounds) it'd interesting to see how fitch would do after the extra 5 then just throw them in the octagon and lock the doors, whoever gets the finish first wins i see fitch winning in the 8th by submission

3. Anderson Silva vs GSP (177 lb) - this fight speaks for itself, i dont need to sell it anymore

4. Junior Dos Santos vs Rampage Jackson (225 lbs) - Rampage will probably come in at a slight size disadvantage but Dos santos making a cut will probably offset that, both guys have crippling power in their hands and the ability to end a fight whenever. Rampage hasnt looked all that great in his past few fights but he owns a grappling advantage over JDS so it'd be interesting to see how he'd take advantage of that. I'll take the hotter JDS over the fading Rampage though by 2nd rnd ko

5. Rashad Evans vs Chael Sonnen (195 lbs) - Rashad is a smaller lhw and i think he could make 185 with little difficulty so i dont think the weight cut would be an issue. This fight is a simple matchup though, whoever has the best wrestling is gonna win. I think Chael does and ill give him the decision nod

these are the top 5 fights i could think of off the top of my head if anyone else has any interesting fight ideas feel free to add
