Ken Dryden essay "Time for hockey to get head smart"
Dryden's take ...
"My guess is that a lot less would change and for many fewer players than we think. My guess is also that many of the changes would make our games better, and not only for reasons of safety. If some rules are changed, players and coaches will find ways to adapt and to gain a competitive advantage, because that's what players and coaches do."
InGoal Magazines's analysis of the Christensen goal, at the heading Capitals Neuvirth caught in another VH gaffe
The VH technique was also criticized (though in somewhat comical fashion by announcers who mislabeled and clearly mis-understood it) after Neuvirth got caught using it by a perfect, water-bottle buckling, sharp-angle power play shot by the Rangers in Game 3 on Sunday:
It was quickly derided as poor use of the technique – sharp enough angle but too far out – and that may be true. But at what point does poor execution of VH, rather than poor selection of when to use it also come into play?
Neuvirth holds his glove up, but outside the post where it protects nothing, rather than over this shoulder in the net space the puck goes in. He also gets caught cheating off the post, which begs the question: Would it have gone in anyway if he’d been squared up to the shooter in a traditional butterfly, especially if he cheated to the middle again?

Neuvy first star of goalie of the week poll -- UPDATED with Neuvy picture
Thanks to everyone who voted - it was fitting that Neuvy should win over Lindback in the poll, since he was the winning goalie in the match up on Saturday
Vote today for Neuvirth for goalie star of the week
InGoal magazine has a poll for three goalie stars of the week. Neuvy was left off the list, but evidently comments can be used for write in votes
Update: The write in was accepted, and he's now on the list.
Michal Neuvirth - The Great Deceiver?
Evidently "Justin" of Dobber Hockey gave Neuvirth this nickname awhile ago, in June 2009. It was new to me.

Inquiry on Hockey Aborigine souvenirs
I didn't see yesterday's clips until this morning, but I saw the thread about whether we could get posters. I gave writing to the tournament info email a try in French. (with the help of special symbols in Microsoft Word.)
Roughly translated, it says
Is it possible to buy posters from the tournament? There are a lot of Washington Capitals fans who would like one. (We like the picture of Matthieu Perrault. The wings are great.) If it’s possible to buy street wear with the design, like t-shirts or hats, that would interest us also. Or, we’d be interested in other souvenirs, if available.
Thank you for your attention.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer on Pens poor show
Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that so many of us laughed at Washington's Alex Ovechkin and accused him of gagging against the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs? The Not-So-Great 8 could do nothing to prevent his Capitals -- the NHL's President's Trophy-winning team -- from losing Game 7 at home.
Well guess what?
That was Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Sergei Gonchar and Marc-Andre Fleury who hair-balled it against the Canadiens on this night

Capitals Kremlin: Five fatal flubs - reasons the Caps blew it

Price fell down before the tsar himself -- Alex Ovechkin (translation from French)
Le Canadien s'effondre (The Canadiens' collapse) from the Journal of Montreal, 4-19-2010
My translation --
The Canadiens had a very good start in the match. It was in the second period that things got ugly, and when Jarslav Halak left the match in the middle of the period, it was already too late for Jacques Martin's team.
The atmosphere was there this evening at Centre Bell. The Habs began the game like lions. Perhaps it was because Jean Beliveau was in the stands. The former captain was present at a game for the first times since suffering a stroke on January 20.
Mid-way through the first period, there was no lack of scoring chances. The Habs benefited from several quality chances, since the Caps had a power play without scoring.
The tempo of the match was electric. Benoit Pouliot, in particular, was all over the ice during the first period. Montreal had to kill two penalties toward the end of the period. Hall Gill and Jaroslav Halak, among others, helped the Habs save the goods. The Canadiens dominated shots on goal in the first period, with 10 to the Capitals 7.
After a furious first period, things calmed down a little in the second. Bruce Boudreau took advantage of the opportunity to freely use his best players, and it bore fruit. Ovechkin and his band scored 4 goals in 13 minutes and never looked back. In the process they chased Halak from the match, who had a few things to be sorry for. (Translators note -- the score was 3 - 0 at the goalie change.)
The change in goalies didn't help the miseries of the Canadiens. About five minutes after coming into the match, Carey Price feel down before the tsar himself -- Alex Ovechkin. That brought the score to 4 - 0 Washington.
After a difficult beginning to the third period, the Canadiens spoiled the shut out in scoring a pretty goal. Tomas Plekanec scored his third goal in the series, on a power play. Cammalleri and Hamrlik assisted on the play.
The Canadiens didn't give up in the third period and continued to battle fiercely. Even though the Capitals scored a fifth goal late in the period, it bodes well for the fourth match of the series, which will take place at Bell Centre Wednesday at 7pm.

Professor analyzes if Montreal Canadiens are a religion
Since January 2009, Olivier Bauer has pioneered the world's first course examining the link between hockey and religion. As a professor at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Theology, he also just compiled and coauthored a textbook examining the Canadiens as a religion, "La religion du Canadien de Montreal" (Fides, 2009).
José Théodore mérite le respect
The Canadiens will face the Capitals and José Theodore during the first round. In Washington, Bruce Boudreau, coach of the Capitals, has been amusing himself with the press by saying that he won’t reveal the identity of the goalie before the beginning of the series.
The reality is that there is only one choice, and that is the former Canadien goalie, Jose Theodore. His performances have been excellent this season. His record (30-7-7, GAA 2.81 and SV% .911) is the third best of his career. He did better in 2001-2002 (30-24-10, GAA 2.11, SV% .931), winning the Hart and Vezina trophies. Two years later, in 2003-2004, he had another exceptional season (33-28-5, GAA 2.27, SV% .919)
Now, Jose can hold his head high. High, because he plays for an excellent team, and high, because he has forced his coach’s hand to play him.
Since January 13, Jose has played in 24 games. His record has been exceptional since then, but there is one particularly revealing statistic.. He has allowed only 9 third period goals on 230 shots, which gives a save percentage of .960. He has also received a star about fifteen times since that date. (Translator’s note – I haven’t double checked these stats.)
In my opinion, that’s proof that Jose is ready for this series. His strength is his mental focus and he has always found a way to make the saves that make the difference.
There is other evidence of his background. I remember his performance at the Olympiques de Hull, in junior. In his first season with Robert Mongrain’s team in 1994-1995, he won the Coupe de President and in the playoff series against the Titans in Laval, he skated off with the award for the most outstanding player.
With the Canadiens, his play made it possible for the team to advance to the second round twice against Boston, even though Montreal had been the eighth seed and the seventh seed. With the Avalanche, the team also progressed to the second round twice, even though they had finished in seventh place and sixth place in the regular season.
Now, for the first time since junior, he is playing for a team that could win it all. Last season, the Capitals also had a strong team, but after the first match in the playoffs, Bruce Boudreau decided to change goalies, since Jose had allowed 4 goals in a 4-3 defeat by the Rangers. It is possible that Boudreau could make the same decision this year? Yes, and Jose is well aware of it. But, the reality is that the Canadiens will need to be impeccable against the Capitals to chase their old goalie. Since Jose has experienced success before, he is very hard to beat. It would be unwise to take him out of the equation too quickly. Those who have been tempted to do so have often been done forOriginal article
