Just got back from a great class training for a nice warmup, lots of drilling, 30 minutes nonstop 5 min rounds, and then circuit training at the end. I have never been the best example as a model student, and have missed many of classes for all sorts of reasons. The bottom line is the after class euphoria you get when you give it 110% at practice is the best feeling ever.

We have guys that come late, or leave before its time to roll, but not rolling and doing solid work is cutting yourself short. I have come to the realization that unless you give it 110% in each class, you are selling yourself way short. This also carries on to life, but that story is for another day.

So the results from my MRI in and I have two herniated disks. Nobody fights at 100% but I have a plan to run by everyone. I am competing in the Grapplers Quest No-Gi Tournament in Vegas on the 6th of July. I have been training and working on my weaknesses but I realized there is just something missing and I was able to put my finger on it today after 3 hours of open mat. I could learn all the guard, passing, submissions etc. but will they really win me the tournament or do I need a secret weapon?

I have noticed the true men of this world wear a mustache, and so I am starting the mustache today and figure it should be almost to Don Fry level by July 6. My question to you is why style of mustache should I grow.

We all know that men with a real mustache are beyond tough, in fact it gives you 50 more toughness points just for a weak moustache.s, The mustache is the men of men's facial hair. So if you have any ideas in mine let me know, I am also happy to provide status updates as this baby turns into a Dan Severn or Don Fry. I am wondering if I should do the Rollie FIngers, etc.

Help a brother out.

I have a MRI scheduled tomorrow at 9am to find out if i have a herniated disk. I am going to compete in Grapplers Quest in Vegas on the 6th of July. I will be doing the no-gi tourny.

I have decided from this point to quit competing in the GI in any tourneys that use IBJJF rules. The amount of rules they are initating is rediculous, the reaping of the knee is IMO one of the dumbest rules ever, with the new set of revisions it seems that they want to have the most boring competitions possible. I like the Gracie Nationals rules but IBJJF IMO is killing the fun of the game and makes leg locks taboo for lower belts, yet these are legit submissions. You could break someones arm just as easy as a knee if you go for a quick sub and don't care about your submission

I hope the MRI comes out good, i am competeting either way as we are never 100%. To everyone that is going to compete comment below, maybe we could meet up before the tourney and have fun at the fan expo. To those considering it, do it. Grappler's Quest has great tourneys and are a great way to test your skills, no matter what level you are.

I am not sure how many members there are on this community, but it seems that every time I go to BE I see a fanpost about someone's first day of BJJ,

Here is the story of years of training and what is on the other side for you all just getting started in BJJ. After more then a decade of training I want to help newcomers to the sport realize the truth about BJJ.

I wake up daily with back pain on a daily basis, this is a consequence of the addiction of grappling. I remember the good old days where BJJ was underground. I am glad to see it grow but I am intrigued by who so many people feel the need to post about the first day or first month as it is pretty much all the same: you get your butt kicked.

This post is to my new brethren training BJJ before you start a fanpost about your first day just read these rules, and you will be in for a much more favorable experience.

1. Don't Complain: The path to training involves getting your ass handed to you a thousands of times through the years. Just remember it all comes with time. The most dangerous people in class are new white belts, strong white belts are the worst. That leads us to rule number

2. Do not use strength over technique, you might beat a few people with brute strength that are smaller then you, if you make a habit of this you will get your ass handed to you when you roll with a guy your own size who uses technique.

3. Respect the higher belts: See rules 1 and 2.

4. Belts come when they come, if your the guy that shows up late and leaves early it will take you longer to get promoted. If you are training once a week it will take a long time. Consistency and dedication to improving your game should be your only focus, a belt is simply a recognition of the skills you have acquired by spending thousands of hours on the tatame. If you are training to brag about your belt, join a TKD academy, there you can be a black belt in a year.

5. Treat your training partners with respect, if you know you have the sub let it go before you hurt them. If you don't have people to train with because they are all injured, your success will be hindered as you need a variety of body types to train with.

These are the 5 most important tips I could think of, ask any questions in the thread below and I am happy to answer them.
