FSU pitching coach Mike Bell interviewed on Jeff Cameron Show
Jeff Cameron interviewed new Florida State pitching coach Mike Bell on his show today. It's fairly brief (5 minutes) due to Coach Bell's (apparently) already busy schedule. Follow the link to listen.
FSU Loses Series to the Tar Heels. Live Thread vs. #4 Gators Tonight @ 6pm ET
Very little went right for Florida State's (23-9, 9-6 ACC) baseball team last weekend. Starting pitchers not named Sean Gilmartin performed poorly once again, the coaches may be looking for a new weekend starter halfway into the season and their streak of 25 consecutive victories on Sunday was snapped as part of North Carolina's (29-5, 12-3 ACC) first series win in Tallahassee since 1995. And those are just the bullet points. Find the details and a small preview of this season's final game against the rival Gators past the jump.
FSU Baseball Weekend Wrap-up & Live Game Thread vs. Florida, 7pm
Florida State (18-6, 6-3 ACC) won two out of three games in conference play this past weekend. This would ordinarily be fine and well except that when a less-than-impressive Wake Forest (8-15, 3-6 ACC) team comes to Tallahassee, you hope to pull off the sweep and pad your division lead. However, that wasn't how the weekend played out.
The Seminoles started off very well and won Friday night's game handily by a score of 12-4. FSU benefitted from another good start by pitcher Sean Gilmartin (6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and Jayce Boyd's first career grand slam, which came in the first inning. Mike McGee, Sherman Johnson and Justin Gonzalez all had two hits apiece. Friday night also saw the return of Stuart Tapley to left field where he started the season before a hamstring injury relegated him to designated hitting duties. He started in left all weekend. Also notable was that Florida State used three relievers not named Daniel Bennett or Mack Waugh to finish out the game. Those three were Peter Miller, Robby Scott and Connor Nolan. Miller struggled, pitching two-thirds of an inning and giving up 3 walks, 3 runs (1 earned) with a few wild pitches thrown in for spice.
Saturday's game was a different story altogether however. Wake Forest's Saturday starter Tim Cooney smoked a juggled Seminole lineup with 7.2 innings of 5-hit baseball that featured 11 strikeouts (four of which rung up Mike McGee) and only a single walk. Combined with a poor start from FSU's Scott Sitz (1.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) who only faced 14 batters before being lifted for Brian Busch, Wake Forest jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and won the game 8-0. Mike Martin apparently felt the need to shake things up Saturday night as the Seminole batting order featured Rafael Lopez second as the designated hitter and Sherman Johnson dropped to sixth spot. Tapley batted down a spot at eighth and Parker Brunelle started at catcher and batted ninth. But it didn't really matter as Cooney just dominated the Seminoles on a night that saw him throw 129 pitches.
FSU bounced right back on Sunday though with an 11-2 win that extended their Sunday winning streak to 24 games. FSU scored three runs in the first inning with back-to-back home runs by Mike McGee and James Ramsey and added five more in the second (four of which came with 2 outs) to stake starter Gary Merians to an 8-1 lead. Ramsey finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Justin Gonzalez also added two hits including his fourth home run of the season. Despite the fact Florida State had three home runs and a double through the first 1.1 innings of the game, Mike Martin had Lopez, Tapley, Easterling, Travis and Boyd all attempt to bunt early in their first at-bats. In the case of Boyd, he bunted foul and then hit a 2-run single on the very next pitch. Merians (6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) improved his record to 4-1 with a solid start after getting through a shaky first inning that saw Wake Forest score one of their two runs on a throwing error by Sherman Johnson after Merians surrendered a walk and a single earlier in the inning. Robby Scott, Robert Benincasa and Daniel Bennett each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to secure the victory.
Tonight, Florida State travels to Jacksonville for the third of their four meetings with the Florida Gators. Florida State has won the last three games against Florida played in Jacksonville. The Gators are ranked 4th in this week's Baseball America poll, falling from the top spot after losing two of three games to SEC East rival South Carolina. It was Florida's first series loss at home in nearly two years. Florida State will
send junior righty Hunter Scantling (1-0, 1.04 ERA) to the mound to start against Florida junior right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (3-0, 1.12 ERA, 3 saves). Scantling appeared to start strong in the last meeting between the two teams, striking out four Gator batters in his first trip through the lineup. Florida quickly caught up to him though and he didn't make it through a second time as Mike Martin lifted him in favor of Robert Benincasa in the first of what would be a bizarre string of eight pitching substitutions. FSU would end up blowing a 4-0 lead and lose the game 5-4 in ten innings.
DeSclafani has pitched 3.2 innings (including the final two of the game in Gainesville) against FSU this year. He's given up no hits, only one walk and struck out three of the fourteen Seminole batters he's faced. He is an experienced starter, but he's become more of a reliever over the last season and a half with 11 of his 17 career starts coming in his freshman season.

FSU Baseball Game Thread: Game 3 vs. Boston College
Florida State goes for the sweep today against Boston College and also looks to continue their streak of Sunday wins. The Seminoles did not lose a game played on Sunday all last season. After winning a 3-1 pitchers' affair in Game One, the Florida State bats were able to take advantage of some very poor Boston College pitching on Saturday to earn a 15-6 victory. Sherman Johnson, Rafael Lopez and Taiwan Easterling each had three hits last night.
Scott Sitz gets the start today which means Gary Meirans will probably start against Florida on Tuesday in Gainesville. Seth Miller returns to the starting lineup in left field.
Television: SunSports
FInal Update: FSU wins 4-3 on a bases loaded sac fly in the bottom of the ninth by Rafael Lopez. The Seminoles overcame six innings of nothing at the plate as Boston College coach Mike Gambino left his starter in too long in the seventh inning and allowed the Seminoles to erase a 3-run deficit. But it seems in retrospect he didn't have much choice as his relievers were not very effective and FSU threatened in the eighth and won it in the ninth.
FSU Baseball Game Thread: Game 2 vs. Boston College
Florida State takes on Boston College in Game 2 of the opening series of conference play. FSU won Game One 3-1 behind a very good pitching performance by Sean Gilmartin. Brian Busch gets the Saturday start once again. Can FSU go ahead and secure the series against a mediocre Boston College team before another midweek tilt against Florida and a road trip to Virginia? Follow in the comments if you can't get coverage.
Television: Fox Sports Florida
Final Update: FSU wins 15-6 in a 3 hour 40 minute affair. FSU had 15 hits and scored at least 11 of their runs with two outs. Brian Busch had another pedestrian outing where he failed to get through the 5th inning. FSU runners also continued to make mistakes on the base paths and eventually it's going to catch up to them. But tonight it didn't matter as BC's pitching was pretty awful.
Florida State will look for the sweep tomorrow with Scott Sitz getting the start. Game time is 1pm and the game will be televised on SunSports. Chances are high I will have another live game thread tomorrow. So check back with Tomahawk Nation if you don't get SunSports and follow the game in the comments or join in the discussion if you do.
FSU Baseball Game Thread: Game 2 vs. Georgia
The second game of Florida State's series against Georgia is televised on CSS today and I'll be running play-by-play for those who can't see the game. It rained heavily in Athens overnight and the weather looks to be cold and gray today. The infield was covered but the outfield is still very wet.
FSU nearly blew a six-run lead in the ninth last night but managed to hold on to a 6-5 win. Follow the game in the comments to see if FSU will remain undefeated on the season.
UPDATED FINAL: Georgia hands Florida State its first loss of the season with some very good pitching and a generous strike zone. Final score Georgia 2, FSU 1.
Holding Calls in ACC Play
In response to the article from the other day about holding calls, or lack thereof, there were several comments asking for a little more data about holding calls that have gone against our opponents. I was a little bored tonight so I decided to compile our holding calls and those of our ACC opponents this season. A few things:
- These numbers are from ACC games only. Conferences have differing rules about who officiates games. So to be sure I dealt with ACC officials only, I pulled the numbers from ACC games.
- Penalties counted are for offensive holding only...no defensive holding or holds during kick returns.
- I wasn't so bored that I compared the offender from each penalty with team rosters to figure out if the call was on a lineman or another offensive player (running backs, wide receivers, etc.).
- I was bored enough to go through every game's drive chart to find all the penalties because none of the stat sites I checked had a breakdown penalty types for each game played.
- I don't plan on following up with numbers from the final three games of the season.
- I am not a statistician by any means and I do not use Excel often. So the two charts are really basic.
This chart shows our ACC opponents for this season, number of conference games played, total offensive holding calls against that team in conference play, and the numbers of holds called against them in their game versus Florida State.

And the following chart shows our ACC games this season and the number of offensive holding penalties called against us in those games.

A few other notes:
- Two of our holding calls negated touchdowns. One was against Virginia, the other against North Carolina State. I can't speak to if any other teams had points taken off the board due to any of their holds.
- At least four of our holds are against players that are not offensive linemen. (Easterling-2, Haulstead-1, Relliford-1)
This information is for entertainment purposes only. Use it in good health and discuss amongst yourselves.
