Jazz fan in Denver, CO
a fan of
Utah Jazz
Florida Gators
California Golden Bears
RSSUser Blog
Guys, the reason we won tonight in Denver is because FESS was there! He was sitting two rows in front of me and rooting on the Jazz! Of course I spoke with him briefly - he said his knee is almost back to 100% and he's looking to sign with a team soon. Love the guy - what a pleasant surprise to see the former Jazz center in person for the first time!
First time visitor to Salt Lake City
Hey all, been a Jazz fan since 1994 and have lived and watched the Jazz play in Texas, California, and Florida over the years. Have never stepped foot in the state of Utah before...until this weekend. I've been saving up money for years to make this trip and can't wait to see Salt Lake City, the Delta Center (aka Energy Solutions Arena), the Stockton-Malone statue, and of course the HOME atmosphere and fans. From my experience, there are very few Jazz fans outside of Utah and frankly I am pretty tired of getting the the following bemused/disgusted responses when I proclaim I am a fan of the Utah Jazz:
"Why, are you from Utah?"
"Why, are you Mormon?"
"Why? The Jazz are so boring"
"Dude the Jazz suck, Lakers rule!"
My hat is off to Basketball John and the other authors for developing this site over the years into a solid community, especially for out-of-state fans who must perpetually exist in a state of physical isolation. While I am rarely vocal on gamethreads, my internet browsing history would show that this is far and away the most visited site for me every single day of the year.
With that said, I was hoping that I could ask you SLC natives for some recommendations on must-see attractions and must-do activities for a first-timer. I will be arriving this Saturday (2/5/11) morning and will be leaving Sunday evening, and will have access to a car. Aside from watching the Jazz wallop the OKC Thunder on Saturday night, what else should I make sure to see/do? A few ideas that are already on my list after the jump...

FINALLY - Going to my 1st NBA playoff game
Guys, the time has finally come. As some of you might recall from before the series began, I had mentioned that I will be in Denver on business for Game 5, and I would try my best to attend my first NBA playoff game ever. A few things had to happen:
- No sweep, ensuring an actual game 5 to occur
- Obtaining tickets to Game 5 somehow
- Have Game 5 be a pivotal game where the Jazz need the road support (I had expected optimistically 2-2, pessimistically 1-3 with the Jazz facing elimination, and as a longshot 3-1....how incredible is that)
Well, check on all 3. GAMETIME FELLAS!
Kevin Arnovitz's coverage of the Jazz-Nuggets series
Kevin Arnovitz on TrueHoop has been writing some fantastic articles covering the Utah-Denver series. His most recent one on how the Jazz are picking apart the Nuggets weak defense is one of the best descriptions of the Jazz offensive execution I have read in recent memory.
My favorite part of the article:
"If you want to understand how Jerry Sloan can get away with putting a lineup on the floor of Ronnie Price, Kyle Korver, Othyus Jeffers, Paul Millsap and Kosta Koufos, it's because each of these guys knows his function in such a scheme. In the case of the last of Korver's three jumpers, Koufos plays the role of traffic cone on the left block. First Jeffers curls and clears, then Korver runs Afflalo directly into Koufos before Price delivers the ball on target to Korver for the shot. Everything in its right place."
Lesson 1 in guarding Carmelo taught by Matt Harpring
"When a guy gets going like that, you got to make a hard foul, you’ve got to do something to get him out of his rhythm," Harpring says. "If you want Carmelo smiling in the fourth quarter after he makes a couple of shots, then that’s on you. That’s a pride thing, when you’re guarding someone. If it’s me, I’m fouling out before that happens. You don’t go out without fighting."
- quote from "Little Jerry", taken from TrueHoop article (http://tinyurl.com/yyzzgmj)
C'mon now, is that so hard to do? HAVE A LITTLE PRIDE, JAZZMEN.
Will the referees give Jerry Sloan "retribution" against the Celtics?
Okay, so we now know from the SLtrib blog that Coach Sloan avoided any punishment for getting intimate with referee Michael Smith on Friday night's game in Phoenix.
It is 2010 and knowing what we now know about disgraced former ref Tim Donaghy's stories, do you guys think we are in for some referee retribution tonight against the Celtics? I'll definitely be recording this game and watching closely.
Last 20 games of the season
I loved reading people's predictions in the comments section of the Downbeat on 3/8/10, so I thought I'd put up a fanpost to give my own predictions on the remaining games as well as hear from everybody else.
Warning - I am not as optimistic as the rest of you. Here goes the predictions, game by game, with brief reasoning for each.
RONNIE BREWER INJURED
I have League Pass, and I was just watching and cheering for Ronnie B in his first Memphis game (he was sporting a yellow headband).
Recap of 2 Europe Games
Ok so I originally posted this under the comments and decided it probably would be better as a post. I had both games recorded on DVR and here are my comments, player-by-player.
Purple and Piss Yellow Jazz hat
Why in the world would anybody make a hat like this and think that Jazz fans would buy it?
Must have a been a Laker fan working at Adidas.
It truly perplexes the mind...
Sickest D-will mix out there
Man I watched this and got super stoked about the upcoming season again. I think amid all the hoopla about Boozer/Millsap/Korver/Okur opting in, out, left, and right we forget that our whole team revolves not around any of those guys, but this guy featured in the mix below. As long as he is healthy, we have a chance, no matter who the front office puts around him.
Officially excited about the upcoming season again...
D-will (and Harp) in new NBA TV commercial!
Can't believe Deron is featured as the last clip in that sequence! That was after his game-winning lay-up last year against the Cavs, right guys?
Nice hustle play, Harp. I guess.
SLAM Magazine with Deron cover
This one is for Moni's FanShot from a while back - you ask and you shall receive. I searched high and low for this issue (4 Wal-Marts, 2 Targets, and 3 airports over Thxgiving weekend) - it has been hard to find!
Here's the scanned feature article about D-will by Ryne Nelson of SLAM (Ish 124). Found it on a newsstand in the Houston airport (let me know if you guys can't read the text - UPDATE: tried using Tinypic.com and switching from a PNG to JPEG, so hopefully that helps). CP3 ENVY ALERT: They always find a way to one-up Deron...CP3 comes first in the issue, and his article prologue begins with, "Forget the NBA: Chris Paul is the best point guard in the world today. There's no qualifier in there, because it's the truth..." The D-will article begins with some crappy prologue about a "Deron Williams Fan Club". *sigh* I know it's a slight jab, but c'mon!
