Daily Norseman how bad is our D

Well I will start off talking about the O. As stated in an earlier post I think our O should be able to run the effectively. We have two good receiving TE and a great slot receiver that should open Play action. If CP can make changes at the line, our Vikings should have ball control on the Offensive side of the ball. Limit turnovers, ball control, may not be an exciting offensive game plan but with AP and PH this should get us a few wins.

Now to the D

Daily Norseman sort of excited

I know all the attention is on the stadium right now but, do not live in MN so I just have to hope you that do get this done!

In the mean time I have been thinking about the Vikings run game and I am excited about the potential of the run game. We had a decent run game last year and if AP and TG come back strong I think this could be a very powerful run team. We lost the K sauce, but we still have two decent run blocking TE's, picked up a good blocking FB. WIth O line it looks very good for run blocking, pass blocking may be another story. I think we pound the ball and this will open things for some sort of passing game. I love the jumbo two TE sets with an I formation.

Daily Norseman how bad is our secondary

I know this has been hit on a lot this year because of our poor performance last year; but, the only real weak area right now is the Safety position. This is providing that AW can stay healthy, CC steps in where he left off. At safety we have

Sanford, Jamarca

a third year player and
Raymond, Mistral
coming off his rookie season. These players should be much better then they were last year with at least a 3rd round pick to keep them honest. Will they be good enough. A rookie and a second year player last year are going to get burned, were are expectations of them to high for last year.

Let me know your thoughts.

Daily Norseman how long before all player ware knee braces

This is not a question of if, but when. Just like helmets in hockey, it has to happen, it cost everyone to much money not having this and hurts no one player if everyone has to ware them. I bet they are pitching some sort of high tech brace every year and it is only a matter of time before it is required by all player.

One way it could happen is by starting it very soon in HS and college that way in four years all players coming into the NFL would already be used to playing with the device.

Your thoughts?

Daily Norseman eric decker

A couple of years ago we had the chance to pick up former Gopher Eric Decker in the draft and of course we did not. I was a little pissed, but at the time our receivers were decent so what was the big deal. Well what a couple of years will do, hind site is 20/20 but sometimes I just think we miss the boat.

Any chance we win this game, or do we really want to win this game, daft choices more important at this time?

Daily Norseman points to this game

For once it seemed that the Vikings did not give up on the run game.  Badly needed 3rd down conversions kept the game alive and back to the run we went.  This is the sort of thing a lot of us have been looking for in the past couple of years.  Do not give up on the run, keep going back to it until it works, ware down the D and good things will happen.  Again this goes out the window if they do not convert on 3rd and long, but by George they did...a lot.

Daily Norseman missing phat pat yet?

Well we got nailed in the run over the the right side at the end of the game.  This was a spot Pat W used to own. Admittedly  not last year, but for a long time before that.  It made me really miss his play at the position as the game winded down and we could not stop the run.

No I am not suggesting we get Pat back but we need to get someone as a pure run stopper just for that reason.

We really need draft an OL in the first round get WR in the second and pit up a pure run stopping DT in the third.  Or trade, FA anyone of the last two picks.  I really want a long term RT.

Let me know your thoughts, is this the correct decision?  Not worried about the RT run stopping of the Vikings next year?

Lastly can we beat Cam N next weekend.

Daily Norseman Ponder Luck

I think a lot of us liked the way Ponder played last night.  Mobile and hitting receivers in stride throwing to different receivers and even passing deep once.  We need to play Ponder the rest of the season, it is and has been long gone. We need to see if our young QB's can be our next QB.

Daily Norseman predictions for the season

well preseason is behind us and we are just a few days away from the start of the season.  It seems that most of the "Pro" writers have us down between 23-25 out of 32 teams.  Last year we went 6-10 and we were bad in my opinion, but even as bad as we played last year, we were with in a score of winning 5 more games.  I liked what I have seen in preseason but it is preseason so you can not put to much weight on anything right you see before the first game.

Daily Norseman D line

Was anyone concerned that our D line did not seem to get pressure on the QB most of the night?  It seemed to me that there was way to much time in the pocket for Tony Romo.  This with the exception of the third down play in which JA busted the pocket and we got a sack.

Daily Norseman how bad are we this year

OR rather how good are we.  The lack of a second decent WR worries me more then anything.  Is the plan to run more 2 TE sets and run PH outside? More the way the Pats work there O.  If so I like it because we should be able to open up the run.

How bad was the o line last year, was it just injuries that brought sub par performance or just lack of skill on the line.

Is Winfield moving to Safety?  this could be a reason that we let Williams go, however how good is our DB crew with out him in it?

I am not really that worried about the D line, they may not be number one this year but should hold us in games, the question is can they put enough pressure on the QB so they do not pick apart our secondary.

I should change my name because I have moved and no longer live in Montana, been a busy year, I now live in WI just inside WI about an hour from the new stadium site, if indeed there is a new stadium site. Glad to be back in the MId west!

Daily Norseman the real test

Yes I am happy about the last two victories, but this weekends game is a real test of this team making a turnaround.  It is to late for the playoffs.  We would need two teams to lose out and we would have to win out at the same time AND we would need other help.  In years past a 9-7 team can make the playoffs, but not this year.

Daily Norseman screw moss wheres the D

I am very surprised about the moss thing.  That does trouble me, but what troubles me even more is the lack of D.  The game Sunday reminded me very much of the Saints game.  When it really counted we could not stop the run. There was also some poor tackling on a couple of third down plays.  We were very much in this game. Our offense had not made any major mistakes, it was time to stop their O and drive for the winning TD at the end of the game.  Much like the Saints game our D just did not get the job done.  NO PRESSURE ON THE QB ALL DAY.  No run stopping when it really counted.

Daily Norseman chicago

Did anyone feel the Jets game was like the Chicago game last year, the OT loss I mean.  Same thing we came out and did not play the first half and then put together one heck of a second.  I was not able to watch the game but there is a lot of similarities.  Except of course that the Jets are a better team then Chicago.  On the road at night bad weather.

Here is a thought we put in TJ for the first half and BF in the second.  That way the D's will have to make to game plans to stop us and BF can heal his arm a little more?  Ok that is stupid, we have to play an entire game.

Dallas is a good team, Miles is very good we can not give them half a game.

Come on Vikes lets put it together!

Daily Norseman so how does this affect us and how soon

I for one am very excited and that lasted until about 5 minutes ago.  Now I am wondering how much this affects us and how soon.

So, how long before Brett and Moss get their timing down?  I really hope this means a lot of extra time this week working on it.  I would not expect a huge increase on Monday night with Reeves and the Jetts.  But having to give Randy the attention means others should start to break free.

Daily Norseman its just one but you got to start someplace

Well, I am very happy we got the W and having the bye week right now seems like a great thing (I did not think so before the season started).

Did we play great, no is our D solid, hell yes.  Do we need work, hell yes. But we can take the win work for the next couple of weeks on not getting penalties and not turning over the ball.

If we get rid of the yellow flags and stop turning the ball over we have a good shot at the Jets.  If our OL can block for more then 2 seconds (which they did do, for the most part, in the second half) and we can get some WR open watch out.

Daily Norseman OK I'll say it GB is the team to beat

It really pains me to say it but after week one they are in the drivers seat.  The next four games are a lot easier for them then us and we did not show anything offensively in the first game.  I was not terribly impressed by GB in their first game, I believe having Vick QB the entire game may have changed the outcome.  Kolb could not do anything which really gave the advantage to GB early on.  A more even first half who knows?  They did score 27 which really should be telling us that our offense really needs to get on track to win the division.

Daily Norseman predictions Vikes NO

We are the underdog in this game.  Odds makers have given 5 points to NO in this game.  Odds makers want the bets to be even on both sides so if more money is bet on one side they give points to the other side to get people to bet the other way.  So they have to give 5 points to the Vikes to even the betting.  This means that of the betting people out there most feel the Vikings are pretty big underdog in this game.

I do not worry about this and many have posted, we play much better from the underdog position and I see no reason for this to be any different.

We are really in the underdog mode this year.  He had AD at number six as well.

I say good deal, they do not think we can preform, let them believe it, its up to the team to prove they are the best on the field every single week.

Daily Norseman what happens to Joe Webb

So Mr. #4 is back and we have four QB's and Joe is the lowest on the pole.  Looks like he may have some talent, maybe to much for the practice squad (Thigpen anyone, a Miami player now).  Some have mentioned that we may be showcasing Sage to trade him.  If we did trade him, who would you trade for, our roster is already pretty darn full.

Daily Norseman running backs

We all feel that AD is the # one.  All hail to the # one and lets hope that the work on ball handling and uses more patients at the line.  I will predict that AD rush for 1800 yards this year and 400 yards receiving.

The question still comes back to who is #2 and #3 and how would you use them.  At 5'10 209 Albert Young is very much in the mode of Chester Taylor.  He has picked up the system well over the past two years and seems ready to step up as the third down back.  This is such an critical position it really needs to be solidified in preseason.  A couple of dropped passes and missed blocks on third down can change a game.  If he does not really shine in preseason I would prefer to see AD in on 3rd down. With Albert and TG spelling him in the first two downs.

Daily Norseman a time to reflect

As we get closer to the season I think we need a little time to reflect upon what the Vikings have done in the past before we really consider what we will do in the future, besides we are in one of the longest 30 days stretches in the history of the world so we mays well sit back and meditate on the Vikings a little.  This is the vikings O and D rankings through history.

http://www.vikings.com/team/history/yearly-nfl-rankings.html

Now here is the last few seconds of a game I remember real well.  No one I know watched the end of the game but myself.  I held out hope that somehow they could come back from being down three TD's in the 4th and win.  If you have not seen this game you can watch the whole thing on Youtube.  I always held Tommy or from that time on two minute Tommy as something special, years later and a couple of DUI's it was a little harder.
