Gardenhire reflects on Torii Hunter

According to MLB.com Gardenhire is waxing philosophic about Torii Hunter and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as the West Coast club gets ready to take on our home team this weekend.

While Gardenhire has stated he has text messaged Torii a couple of times about the Angel's recent loss of Nick Adenhart, Torii has had some messages of his own to his old organization, his ex-temmates and to his former fans in Minnesota:

You all disrespected my talents and decided I wasn't worth the money, so you let me go, thinking you could easily replace me. Well let me tell you Minnesota, the last laugh is on you as I'm sporting a .382 OBP and a .724 SLG percentage with three home runs and three doubles already this season to go along with my still stellar defense. What have you got? You had to replace me with two people. You tried to replace my defense with a speedy and unproven youngster and you tried to replace my bat with a big Young leftfielder who can't play defense. Unfortunately for you, both of those two players don't add up to one Torii Hunter, and both of them take bigger hacks at the plate than my 84 year old blind gramma does when golfing from her wheelchair at Pebble Beach. You miss me Minnesota, you miss me...

Poor Johan Santana

Remember that pitcher who was a little frustrated at the Twins organization for continually failing to pony up for some offensively adept teammates because he was tired of losing games when he only gave up an average of 3+ runs/start?

Well, he signed a big contract for a team capable of providing him with some run support. But poor Johan hasn't really fared any better in NY than he had with the Twins. Early this season Johan has some painfully good starts that were not well supported. Frankly he was lucky to get away with a win.

Game 1: IP H R ER BB K
        5.2 3 1 1 4 7

Game 2: 7.0 3 2 0 1 13

That's right, 7 innings pitched in game 2 with 13 SO and 1 walk and no earned runs and yet he was tagged with the loss.

That's gotta hurt - just a little. And Francisco Liriano thought he had it bad.

The Indians lost their opener today when Cliff Lee was rocked for 10 runs in just 5 innings.

White Sox and Kansas City: Postponed: Cold -- White Sox home opener

Boston Postponed: Rain -- Red Sox home opener

Get used to that word "postponed" in the month of April Minnesota...

In other news, Santana is poised to win the Mets' opener with 3 hits and one run in 5.2 innings - hopefully for Johan he will get off to a good start this Spring.

Tomorrow is the big day but unlike most opening days the lineup is still in doubt; serious doubt. With Span and Crede struggling, and four outfielders at his disposal, I think Gardenhire should seriously be considering both Buscher and Young as opening day starters. But that is only half the problem as injuries have been a serious issue so far as well: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090403&content_id=4117890&vkey=news_min&fext=.jsp&c_id=min

Injuries to Baker, Bonser, Mauer, Punto, and nor Morneau make the starting lineup a question that will probably not be answered until Monday (just watch Gardenhire post his starters today and make me look silly - something I don't really need any extra help with). One thing we know for sure, barring an arrest for his second DUI, and immediate deportation, Francisco Liriano will take the mound to start the game and Nathan will be there in the ninth if the game is close.

I'm not smart enough to even speculate on what other pitchers will nab which relief roles (or starteing roles for Baker), but in the interest of starting a conversation on this fine Sunday morning I'll throw out a proposed starting lineup:

Gomez cf

Casilla 2nd

Kubel dh

Morneau 1b

Cuddyer rf

Young lf

Buscher 3b

Harris ss

Redmond c

Of course, if Morneau can't start (unlikely after Saturday's performance) Buscher will have to play at 1st, with Crede at 3rd. Would some of the rest of you prefer Punto starting at ss?
