Soloff said, "Travis is obviously not ready to play right now and we're hoping the DL stint will help him." Soloff said Hafner made the trip with the Indians to see how he responded to the cortisone shot.

"He didn't quite feel like himself," said Soloff. "We feel like the additional time on the DL will help strengthen the shoulder."

Polanco (Officially) Makes an Error

There is no link for this yet - just heard it on the radio. After being the beneficiary of a few generous scoring decisions (that I can recall) last year, Polanco officially made a throwing error in the Bottom of the 3rd of today's Tigers/Red Sox matinee, allowing Manny Ramirez to score. This snaps his record for errorless games by a second baseman. From the radio description, I cannot imagine this scoring decision will change before tomorrow's game - after all, they're not playing in Detroit.

Perhaps more importantly, the Red Sox lead Detroit 2-0 after 3 innings.

Sheffield Tears Tendon in Ring Finger; Status Unclear

It appears as though getting swept by the Royals may not have been the worst news of the day for the Tigers. According to the Detroit Free Press, Sheffield tore a tendon in his ring finger while sliding into second base during the eighth inning of today's game. According to the article, his near-term status remains unclear. Nevertheless, this kind of injury can't be a good thing.

Figured this news deserved its own FanShot, especially as updates become available.

Just noticed this while perusing the web. I don't suppose there is too much news here, other than that the Yanks now have a lone lefty in their pen for the remainder of the series.

Link

Given the beating Detroit has taken at the hands of Cleveland teams the past week or so, I thought it would be interesting to read the Detroit media's take on things.

Among the articles I found was here from the Detroit Free Press, which includes some stellar grammar, some even more compelling logic, and apparently some sort of veiled threat (to MLB??) from Gary Sheffied regarding Thursday's bat-handle-throwing incident and the resulting 3-game suspension.

Among other things, Sheffield claims he is the victim of a strike-zone conspiracy and doesn't receive the respect he feels is due to a veteran.

I find his comments within this article rather incredible . . . and utterly lacking in class.

As a complete aside (but certainly not worthy of a new post), after carefully reading Sheldon Ocker's account of the game here, I have to wonder if he (or perhaps his editor) was really watching. Read carefully and see if you are as unimpressed with his recollection of detail as I am. He can do better.

Andy Marte Redux??

Paul Hoynes had this to say in today's Plain Dealer regarding Andy Marte:

"Clubhouse confidential: There might be some disagreement among the Tribe's deep thinkers about whether third baseman Andy Marte should rejoin the big-league club in the near future. Manager Eric Wedge has said repeatedly that he wants Marte as soon as he's recovered from a strained left hamstring and back in playing shape.

Marte was hitting just .143 (3-for- 21) with one homer and two RBI in seven games at Buffalo. If Marte isn't recalled, the Indians could activate him and option him to Buffalo."

**
Assuming Marte does return to Cleveland in the near future, such return would likely cause a chain reaction in the lineup affecting no less than three or four positions (3B, 1B, potentially even both corner outfield positions).

That said, I'd be curious to hear everyone's thoughts on Marte, et al. Should Marte return to Cleveland as soon as he is injury-free (and presumably, play the majority of time at 3B)? Should he remain in Buffalo? If he should return to Cleveland, how is the rest of the lineup likely to be affected? Is such a lineup shakeup a good thing?

My thoughts on this are quite mixed at the moment - so I would be very interested to hear what others are thinking about this. It might make for a good/timely topic that everyone might want to weigh in on . . . especially on an "Off Day."
