Bullpen help?
We all read the articles yesterday about Pedro Martinez's decision not to pitch this season. Why wouldn't the Yankees want to make an offer to him - not to be a starting pitcher, as most probably consider him, but as a relief pitcher?
No one can argue that Martinez is not the same pitcher that he was 10 years ago, but he's still a really good pitcher. I can't find the stats to verify this, but I remember seeing a graphic last year in regards to Martinez's ERA and BAA during the first time through the lineup. It was great... like elite pitcher great. Martinez could be the perfect fit for the Yankees problems, and he could fill in for Aceves role.
In addition, Martinez would be a good asset for the young pitchers in the bullpen. In my opinion, Martinez is one of the smartest pitchers that I've ever witnessed. Perhaps, he could provide some insight to the younger guys.
