Athletic departments see surge financially in down economy
I have to say - it makes me damn proud of my University the way they handle their expenses so well. We have one of the smallest revenues in the BCS conferences, yet still find a way to go under budget - AND STILL FIELD VERY COMPETITIVE TEAMS.
President Obama's Tourney Picks
Obama almost went straight chalk in his Sweet 16 excluding 4 seeds Texas and Wisconsin in favor of 5 seeds K-State and Arizona. Way to be bold Prez.
Piecing Together the Ideal Big 12 Program
Our favorite ESPN write, Dave Ubben, has compiled a list of several idea qualities to look for in a Big 12 program. Although there is a lot of Texas mentioned, I can't say that I really argue with any of his choices.
-I'd probably kick Bob Stoops off the top coaches selection. I'd take a Mack Brown recruited, Bill Snyder coached team any day. Bob could be an assistant I suppose.
-Best city for me would be Boulder - just because I'd prefer the mountains. You really can't go wrong with either Boulder or Austin depending on your preferences.
Thoughts?
RMN's Caption Contest
TB linked to one of RMN's caption contests last week, but this one is about the freakish storm that rolled into Manhattan last Saturday.
Looks like you'll have to beat a few good Independence Day quotes. Good stuff.

Wildcats to play in 4 Big Monday Games in 2011
Our Kansas State Wildcats will appear on ESPN's Big Monday 4 times next season. That ties KU with their 4 appearances as well. Interesting notes:
- A team from the state of Kansas will play in all but one Big Monday game.
- Baylor and MIzzou both appear twice.
- The "big 3" only appear three times with Oklahoma not appearing at all. Looks like the "Forgotten Five" will get dragged down by the "Big 7" yet again.

Top 5 Reasons why Nebraska is a perfect fit for any conference
TB and I have been discussing the whole Big 10 conference expansion quite a bit lately. We have been discussing which schools would be the best fit for each conference, financial implications, and the overall expectations individual fanbases have. So naturally, we started to poke some fun at the situation.
So we decided to come up with some marketing strategies for a few schools that they can use to help gain entry to other conferences should they need or want to. Today we will start off with our neighbors to the north, the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Click the jump for why we think Nebraska is the perfect fit for any conference.
Juussst a bit outside! Zaun struggles with returning baseballs
Reminds me of a scene from Major League II
Jake Taylor: Rube, what's going through your head just before you throw the ball back to the pitcher?
Rube Baker: I'm thinking, "Damn, I don't want to screw this up."
Jake Taylor: Well, what are you thinking when you throw a strike to nail the runner down at second base?
Rube Baker: Well, I, I'm not thinking nothing. I just throw it.
Jake Taylor: You see what I'm getting at?
Rube Baker: You want the pitcher to pitch from second base?
Jake Taylor: [frustrated, blank look] Oooogh.
Shipman looking for new school
This is from GoPowerCat.com and requires a subscription (which I don't have), but the preview of the article states that former UF G/F Ray Shipman is looking to transer - possibly to K-State.

ESPN's Player Bio
From SB Nation's UF blog, Alligator Army: Ray Shipman Transers Out of Florida
From the comments from Alligator Army, the kid seems like a catch. He takes academics seriously, plays great defense, and is an all-hustle player. He sounds like a more atheletically gifted Chris Merriewether - which is a great thing. Sounds like a Frank Martin type of guy.
The "One and Done" Debate
The “One and Done” debate in college basketball: Is it fair to universities? Is it fair to force athletes into one year of school? Does the NBA have too much power? What’s the best solution?
I was reading a post found on SI.com and got me thinking about it again. I thought I’d bring it up to everyone at BOTC.
We’ve all heard opinions from anybody who’s nobody on this:
- Eliminate the rule and let the players go pro right out of high school again.
- Up the years required removed from high school to two years.
-Up the years required removed from high school to three years.
-Use Baseball’s eligibility rules: If you don’t go pro out of high school, you must spend 3 years in college.
Out of all the proposed ideas, I tend to like the baseball eligibility rules the best. This allows athletes who have no interest in college make their first major life decision – for good or for bad. For all the Lebron’s and Kobe’s out there, there are many more of them that fail. That is their decision. This will also help restore the continuity of college basketball.
Now what happens if the NBA doesn’t want to play ball? This directly effects the universities trying to recruit and build/maintain a program. So what can the NCAA do to create their own rules? How can they separate the true student-athletes from the athletes?
I’ve got an idea.
Letters of Intent are like contracts right? They are meant to give a student-athlete an education (and a scholarship) if he/she agrees to play a particular sport for that university. Why not enforce that? Make it a legal binding contract that forces the athlete to stick with the school until a degree is earned (or uses up their eligibility). For example, if you choose to play college basketball at Kansas State, you will be required to stay 4-5 years.
If that player decides to leave early to go play professional, the NCAA or the university could impose a hefty legal fine to make up for the time and money the school put into the player. If a player bolts for first round money from the NBA, I’m pretty sure they’ll be able to pay back the university. This could also work for transfers, but could get sticky. I would suppose the NCAA or the universities would have to develop some sort of exceptions for this. (It’s not perfect).
So what does that mean for those athletes who would be considered one and done?
I say let them pay their own way. If they don’t want to sign to play for 4-5 years, don’t allow them to receive scholarships. I mean we’re only really talking about an extremely small number of players here. If they don’t care about their education, why does the university have to help pay for it? I see no problem for these potential-professional players to take out a student loan and pay the whole thing back when they receive their first paycheck.
So what do you say BOTC? Is this a legit possibility or am I living in a bubble thinking the NCAA could pull something like this off? Or is this even fair to anybody?
Let's go with Jacob Pullen. He's gotten some run, sure, but he's been largely lost in the upset shuffle. What he did against BYU was otherwordly. The beard needs more love. Or fear. Whichever the beard prefers.
Who is K-State's greatest Trillionaire?
We know live in a world where stats, sometimes completely useless, can be found in anything. After reading a Black Heart Gold Pants article about a new stat - "The Trillion." (Don't worry Cat fans, Devan Bawinkel Is The World's Greatest Trillionaire.)
ESPN Bracketology: After the KU loss, K-State now a 1 seed?
So I guess Duke as a No. 1 seed was based on K-State losing to KU while they beat Maryland. Well, since Duke lost, K-State moves up a spot to take the last 1 seed. Interesting...
Risers & Sliders: Unheralded wideouts step forward on Day 4
Brandon Banks/Kansas State: Banks measured in at a tiny 5-feet, 6.5-inches and 149-pounds. He ran fast, clocking 4.4-seconds in the forty, then really stood out during pass catching skills. Banks displayed a burst of speed which he was able to turn on in one step, and was incredibly exlosive. His pass-catching skills were better than advertised as Banks made all the catches during the session.
Jordan Shipley/Texas: Shipley was slow in the forty, then displayed limited quickness and route running skills during the practice session. Scouts must now decide if Shipley is a legitimate NFL receiver or a product of the spread offense at Texas.
Gee, Tell me something I didn't already know...
Postgame: K-State 68, Colorado 51
Denis Clemente grabbed a rebound at midcourt and flung a behind-the-back pass to Rodney McGruder. The freshman could have done anything with the ball, but he chose to pass to Jacob Pullen under the basket. Pullen also could have scored, but he chose to pass to a streaking Curtis Kelly, who threw down a thunderous dunk.
Anybody know where to find this video? Sounds like a must-see.
3 K-Staters invited to NFL Combine
Josh Moore, Jeron Mastrud, and Brandon Banks received invites to the Combine. Surprisingly, Jeffery Fitzgerald was omitted. Really not sure why Banks was invited. I can't imagine a team taking a chance on a player of his size.
Pat Forde's Forde Minutes
Since we are linking to ESPN today, I thought I'd link up Pat Forde's weekly column. He usually throws out a shout out to a restaurant/bar from the Game Day site.
He recommended Vistaburger.....Really? I mean it's an OK fast food joint, but really? Didn't bother to make it to Aggieville and grab a real burger at So Long?

BOTC 2009 Statistics
Saw this on a few sites here at SB Nation and thought it'd be fun here.
Story lines for 2010:

-Can MadCat outpace the rest of BOTC with his Fanshot domination?

Big 12 Hoops: Big 12 All-Decade Team
The guys at Rock M Nation had the idea first, but who would you put in K-State's all decade team?
Kansas State's defense has allowed 38 plays of at least 20 yards this season. That's a significant improvement from a year ago, when the Wildcats allowed 75.
Cat's receive votes in first ESPN/US Today Poll

Take the preseason rankings as they are, preseason. I personally think Mizzou is a little high, but I completely disagree with Kentucky's top 5 ranking.
Josh Freeman to get his first NFL start (Nov. 8)
Well this took only a few games sooner than I had originally thought. Let's hope he can turn around (or at least get a win...) for the 0-7 Bucs.
Banks takes yet another ST Player of the Week Award
So what's the over/under that Banks will return a total of 5 this season?
Also, I'm a little surprised that Daniel Thomas was omitted after a 4-touchdown performance. Rodney Stewart only had two...
Bucs aquire familiar target for Freeman
I was a little surprised to hear that Yamon Figurs wasn't employed by some NFL team for his punt return skills. Evidently he may get a shot at receiver with Tampa Bay.

K-State picked to finish 4th in Preseason Coaches Poll
No real surprises here - maybe except Baylor dropping off a little.
