Swish Appeal Ranking the WNBA Sophomores - Week 2

Rookies are often ranked to see their potential progress through a WNBA season to see how well they are playing. They are also ranked to see who has a legitimate chance of becoming the ROY. I thought it would be a good idea to see how last year's rookies are playing in their second season. With teams playing between at least eleven to fourteen games the past month and two weeks, I thought it would be a good idea to see how all the sophomores are playing so far and rank them in their progress. Here is the previous week of the rankings.

Swish Appeal San Antonio Silver Stars vs Los Angeles Sparks Post Game Recap

I missed a good chunk of the first quarter of this game and when I did watch it, the San Antonio Silver Stars did not play a great first quarter and LA led by 9 going into the second quarter as a result. In the second quarter, the Silver Stars got their perimeter game working and started to stifle the Sparks.

Jia Perkins led the way with 18 points, scoring in the paint and the three point line. LA lead by one going into half time by a score of 43 - 42.

Swish Appeal Why women are less supportive of the WNBA

Two weeks ago, I wrote a post in which I explained that that I was going to focus on the above topic: why women are less supportive of the WNBA for my current affairs class. I am now done the majority of the research and I thought I would share the following with you. I contacted at least 9 professors and unfortunately NONE of them either had the time OR knew too much about the topic. So, unfortunately I do not have a video interview uploaded. It was rather interesting the research I found. I think some of you might be surprised.

As I was researching for my current affairs on women supporting women in women's sports, a professor from Syracruse University named Dr Boyce Atkins talks to a women's sports expert Deborah Stroman from the University of North Carolina. I thought this (2009) interview could provide insight into this issue.

Swish Appeal The Week it was for potential draft picks in the WNBA

When two potential draft picks( or three) play against each other, it usually is weekly and not on consecutive days. Starting from Sunday(Feb 7) there are/were 4 NCAA games that featured potential draft picks. Jantel Lavender, Amy Jaeschke, Victoria Dunlap, Jessica Breland, Jasmine Thomas, Angie Byorklund*, Maya Moore and Sarah Miles all played or are playing this week against one another. 3 NCAA games have passed that had WNBA lottery potential.

Feb 6th.

Ohio State vs Northwestern - Jantel Lavender (Ohio State) vs Amy Jaeschke (Northwestern)

Feb 7th

Duke vs North Carolina - Jasmine Thomas(Duke) vs Jessica Breland (North Carolina)

Tennessee vs Kentucky - Victoria Dunlap (Kentucky) vs Angie Bjyorklund* (Tennessee)

*Angie was not playing yesterday due to a foot injury

Feb 8th

Connecticut vs West Virginia - Maya Moore(Connecticut) vs Sarah Miles (West Virginia)

I was not able to watch the games that featured these players against one another unfortunately. I do hope once my schedule slows down to be able to catch at least one game that features two potential lottery picks against one another.

Just for fun, I outlined all the dates that have 2 potential lottery picks playing against each other. So save these dates!

Feb 9th

Oaklahoma vs Texas A&M - Danielle Robinson(Oaklahoma) vs Danielle Adams(Texas A&M)

Feb 13th

Boston College vs Duke - Carolyn Swords (Boston College) vs Jasmine Thomas (Duke)

Feb 14th

Oaklahoma vs Connecticut - Danielle Robinson(Oaklahoma) vs Maya Moore(Connecticut)

Feb 27th

North Carolina vs Duke - Jessica Breland(North Carolina) vs Jasmine Thomas(Duke)

Swish Appeal My Current Affairs Class and the WNBA

I recently put out a tweet that said I would discuss the WNBA for my current affairs class.  As a WNBA fan in Canada, I never really get to express the fandom I have for the WNBA. So, it was really cool that I could use it for a stepping stone for a part of a current affairs show.

Swish Appeal An Early Look At the WNBA Draft: Top NCAA Seniors In The 2011 Draft Class

I'm not a college basketball fan. I prefer the pros. However, I DO thank the UCONN, TENN, Stanford, Duke, Baylor, Maryland and other programs for producing some of the top women basketball players in the WNBA and the world.

But this year I decided I wanted to at least try college basketball. See how it is. And that got me to thinking...why not keep an eye out for all the seniors who have the potential to be at least high draft picks for 2011? Why not see how their progress is made and keep an eye out for that one senior that always surprises people come WNBA time? I'm not an expert by any means on who will make it but there are some seniors who I think will least have a good shot.

Most of you know that there is no coverage of the FIBA championships except for that on FIBATV and with a price and or the USA games on NBATV. Well, it turns out TSN(in Canada) won't show the games, but the highlights. That's why as a Canadian and a Canadian women hoops fan, I look forward to this site as well as Doug Smith's blog! So check out what the Canadian women are doing!! :)

Well, I know that everyone knew about SASS having too many forwards, so this really isn't a surprise to too many fans. Crystal should have no problem in finding a WNBA team either this year or next! All the best to Crystal!

Swish Appeal Los Angeles Sparks vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Preview

It's game day for the Silver Stars and they're playing the Los Angeles Sparks which headlines superstar Candace Parker. It's an 8 pm tip off at the AT&T Center.

Here's the WNBA official preview. http://http://www.wnba.com/games/20100522/LASSAN/gameinfo.html

The game should be available on Live Access.

I won't be watching this game, because I will be out, but it should be a good game.

Starting Line Ups for the Los Angeles Sparks

PG - Ticha Penichero
SG - Noelle Quinn
SF - Delisha Milton Jones
PF - Tina Thompson
F/C - Candace Parker

Starting Line Ups for the San Antonio Silver Stars

PG - Becky Hammon
SG - Edwige Lawson Wade
SF - Roneeka Hodges
PF - Sophia Young
C - Michelle Snow ( Ruth Riley game time decision)

Key Notes

This will be the first time that the Los Angeles Sparks have played over in a week and they should be ready to play. Candace Parker should be her usual dominant self, and the Silver Stars should be ready in case Tina Thompson or Delisha Milton Jones go off as well. The key player to me is Roneeka. She will be needed to play well, otherwise the Silver Stars will have their hands full. This will also be Chamique Holdsclaw's first game with the Silver Stars. The Silver Stars waived Belinda Snell to make room for Chamique. It will be interesting to see how she plays and responds to coming off the bench.

Candace Parker is my pick for the WNBA Pick One Challenge because she plays well against the Silver Stars and has had terrific games against them, both in the playoffs and in the regular season.

Winner: I simply do not know who will win. The Silver Stars will win, if Michelle Snow continues her solid play, and Chamique is a difference maker off the bench. The Los Angeles Sparks will win, if Tina Thompson and Delisha step up and someone off the bench explodes (Andrea Riley)

Swish Appeal What cities can the WNBA thrive in?

I haven't posted in forever because of my hectic schedule and personal time off because I've been trying to get my blog working and up to date for the 2010 WNBA season! I'm so excited, because even though I don't live in a WNBA city, i've been meaning to buy season tickets and donate them to who ever deserves it in that city. I've also been trying to find good merchandise because if I didn't indicate it before, i'm a huge San Antonio Silver Stars fan and the WNBA when Candace Parker entered the league :) So yes, i'm a fairly newbie at this, so bear with me! :)

That got me thinking, what city would the WNBA thrive in? Where would it be the best suited in and fans would come to see them play? I've listed and thought of some cities that I think personally, the WNBA would be able to work/thrive.

1. Tennessee - No explaination necessary.

2. Boston - One of the biggest cities and has basketball culture, I think Boston would be able to hold/retain a WNBA team and make it work.

3. Dallas. I think that Dallas would be a great fit for the WNBA to thrive. Basketball is growing in Dallas, and although I don't think Mark Cuban would buy the WNBA franchise, I do think he would help support the franchise and help it grow. I really think Dallas would be a good fit for a WNBA team and it would make for a great rivalry with San Antonio. Nancy Lieberman is a person who I think could help benefit the Dallas WNBA team/lay the foundation.

Some other cities that I think would also be good fits, but because of WNBA franchises already placed and failed, it might not work  a second time. Places like Miami, Orlando, Portland, Utah, etc.

I picked Miami and Orlando because I think it would work a second time, but I was skeptical because it took the Orlando NBA team to make it to the NBA Finals to succeed, and Miami Heat constantly deal with empty seating in their arena, even when playing big names such as Lebron James.

Portland also seems like a good place for a WNBA team, but like I stated earlier, due to the former franchise, it might not work again.

Utah is also interesting because the interest in women's basketball is growing and I would love to see cities in which it was labelled as "not going to work OR "doomed to fail" thrive.

So that is what I think . I would like the WNBA to expand to at least 1 team in the 2011 WNBA season, and hopefully 2 more in the 2012 season. I really want to see more teams play each other and not 2 teams 5x each. It just makes it harder to suprise and compete for the playoffs.

my blog is more or so halfway completed and if you want to see it its www.wnbanewsandnotes.blogspot.com

What do you think? Where do you see the WNBA thriving?

Swish Appeal Rumours & Musings around the WNBA

Alright, so I have some more interesting information regarding coaching changes. I found out on Twitter, as usual because I wouldn't be able to find out from anywhere else, that Minnesota's Jen Gillom is becoming the new head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks. Jayda Evans recently tweeted this information and I find this very fascinating and intriguing. I feel happy for Jennifer Gillom yet I can't bear to see how any of the Minnesota Lynx players must be feeling right now about this latest piece of news. Its very strange to see something like this occuring in the WNBA and I hope that the Minnesota Lynx organization find someone very reputable as the 2010 Lynx team is young and dangerous.

When the official announcement comes out of this week, I will have more to say.

Swish Appeal SACRAMENTO MONARCHS FOLDING

So as I was checking my Twitter posts, I saw something intriguing. Thanks to @BeyondBallers, I found out that the Sacramento Monarchs are folding. In many ways, this is pretty sad. However, after reading the article, I found out that they could possibly relocate to the Bay Area. If this is true, It would be a much better move.
