Pretty well-written article, and it's always nice to see the Giants getting some attention in national media. I agree with most of it, though I think the young pitching staff deserves more emphasis.

I love optical illusions, and this one is pretty darn nifty. I'm not sure how much it contributes to what a batter actually experiences (how easy is it to see how much a baseball is spinning when it's coming at you at 90mph?), but I thought it was worth sharing anyway. At least maybe it'll be a short break from all the rosterbating going on around here.

That's got to be a bit of a blow to the ego. Which is too bad, because I always liked Ray. He really seemed to enjoy the game, and I think he could still be a useful part of a ballclub.

McCovey Chronicles OT: Open Music thread (and PSA)

There was a music thread on this site a while back, and a lot of people recommended a band called Of Montreal.  I listened, got into them, and went to see them a couple weeks ago in DC.  And holy crap, what an awesome show!  It was one of the best concerts I've been to.  So first of, thanks to the McCoven, and second of all:

Public Service Announcement: they are playing in SF in November, and I believe tickets are still available.  If you like them, you should definitely go, because their live show is amazing.  In that sense, they remind me a fair amount of one of my long time favorite bands, the Flaming Lips.  There are lots of bizarre stage antics that get the crowd really into their shows, including people in animal suits.  And I'm not sure I've ever seen a crowd as into a show as the crowd was at that one.

But enough about that.  It's been a while since I've seen a music thread on here, so I think we need one for the coming baseball-less autumn months.  What is everyone here into these days?  I haven't gotten much new music of late and can always use some recommendations.  Other new (to me) music I've been listening to:

Secret Machines (whose third album just came out)

Animal Collective (ultra-weird but fun and interesting)

Beirut (whom I'd highly recommend)

M.I.A. (in my opinion, a mix of some really great songs and some unlistenable songs).
