Weglarz to DL with shin splints

All I have for now is a Lastoria tweet. He hasn't confirmed it but I have no doubt this has something to do with an inverted W.

Run-off poll for avatar

Perhaps not the final run-off either. We'll see how this vote goes. Previous discussion. I can't close and add a new poll to the previous FanPost, so that explains the new one. And anyway it's nice...

Forget all this trade talk. There are more pressing issues.

Namely, Toxicadam's new avatar. For those who don't already know, Adam was convinced neither Lee nor Martinez would be traded. So now I get to assign him a new avatar. It has to stay there until...

Ramirez, Big Papi on the 2003 PED list

61

Of course the discourse on steroids, PEDs, and whether or not names on this list should be leaked has been beaten to death on this site, but certainly Ortiz doing something unethical with chemicals--especially after the way he's publicly bristled at known users--is interesting.

Some new Martinez talk

156

From Nick Cafardo: 1. Boston, Tampa Bay, and San Francisco have talked to the Indians--the line is that they "keep fielding offers"--but the Indians seem determined to pry out top dollar from any trading partner. 2. "According to one NL scout, after the Indians turned down Buchholz for Victor Martinez, the Sox countered with a package of Masterson, Michael Bowden, and an outfield prospect. The Indians turned it down." My impression from earlier reports was that it was the Red Sox who turned down a Buchholz for Martinez swap. Interesting.

David Aardsma would appreciate more superlatives

Hat tip to LL for directing me to this link. Copy/paste the interesting part for the entire rest of this FanShot: -------------------------------------------- "You know, he's a decent hitter, and right off the bat it was out, but you never know with Ichiro back there. Obvioulsy he can cover a lot of ground and (Martinez) just didn't get enough of it, and Ichiro made a great play on it. He made an awesome play." Aardsma's use of the word "decent" is interesting, and probably not accidental. In today's Cleveland Plain Dealer, Martinez had this quote on getting shut down by Felix Hernandez and Jarrod Washburn. "Hernandez and Washburn are two different ptichers. Hernandez is a decent, right-handed pitcher, and Washburn is a decent, left-handed pitcher. You can't compare them, but you have to give them credit.'' Sure sounds like Aardsma was sending a message back to Martinez with his quote, but I could be wrong. --------------------------------------------------------------

Captains players get a taste of the Show

A nice quick article about Captains players visiting the Progressive Field clubhouse during the Mariners series. Of course the cleveland.com comments section wastes no time in trying to spoil a harmless story.

Another highlight of that inning was when right fielder Emil Brown tried to kick the ball back into the infield. He was not quite successful.

Former Padres pitcher Shawn Estes, now with the Dodgers, got the attention of his pal Young when he said of the 2009 Padres, "There's definitely going to be some growing pains. Even though many of their (Padres) kids have a year or two under their belt now, it's going to be a long year, I think." Irked by Estes' preview, Young asked a reporter: "Why are you quoting a Triple-A pitcher?"

I love player-to-player smack talk

Bob Feller is definitely going to bean somebody

12

The Hall of Fame museum in Cooperstown is putting on a "Hall of Fame Classic" with Bob Feller slated to start the game. Fergie Jenkins, Paul Molitor, Phil Niekro and Brooks Robinson are also going to play.

Do it up. In only two votes, the biggest discrepancy is in Anthony Reyes' IP.

A re-post of Aaron Gleeman's Top 50 prospects from March of 2004. He, well, made some mistakes. To be fair I know he isn't the only one.

Orlando Cabrera to the A's

He will be making less than Bobby Crosby. For everyone who loves to rip on Steve Phillips for, "Cliff Lee is the best left-hander in the American League," and Harold Reynolds' subsequent scolding, I remember Reynolds pegging Crosby as the AL MVP during a preseason Baseball Tonight.

Bob Feller, Tris Speaker, Jim Thome, Nap Lajoie

David Schoenfield breaks down who appears on the Mount Rushmore of every AL team. Bob Feller, Tris Speaker, Boo Radley, and Nap Lajoie are his choices for the Tribe.

What on Earth is this about?

18

Some kind of DiamondMind simulated salary league in which Rob Neyer destroys Steve Phillips. It's worth noting that the best lefty in baseball was not on Steve's team.

Tribe pitching coach Carl Willis spotted a small flaw in Carmona's delivery. The right-hander worked on it this winter. "We saw much better results," said assistant GM Chris Antonetti.

I can't believe no one has even seriously considered Ben Sheets. Hopefully this gets his phone a-ringing.

O/T: It's beer-related so we're good

54

From the PD article: "One of Ohio's best and most innovative beer makers will soon be opening his own brewpub. Brewer Matt Cole filled the walls of the Rocky River Brewing Co. with banners noting his many awards during his 11 years there. Now he's taking his magic touch to North Olmsted, where his Fat Heads Brewery & Saloon will open in mid-January." Thoughts?

Rumor Mill dropoff

100

Because I needed somewhere to post this link. Consider this a dumping ground for any and all Winter Meetings rumors I guess. "According to one National League executive, the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves have had serious discussions about a trade that would send outfielder Jeff Francouer to the Royals for pitcher Zack Greinke. The same source said he believed the teams were close to executing the deal, but that Atlanta was holding up any and all trade discussions until the Braves had a resolution of their pujrsuit [sic] of right-hander A.J. Burnett." Wait what? Jeff Francouer, 2008: .239/.294/.359

Dodgers, Blake close to deal

Tony Jackson says it looks like 3yr/$17 million.

Unconfirmed: Dye-for-Bailey swap

15

The Dayton Daily News claims they've been told of such a transaction. We'll have to see how this turns out.

Tazawa Junichi

The link is to the actual article but I'm just going to blatantly link to Lookout Landing's post on him because I don't have anything to add that wouldn't be paraphrasing anyway. He looks good.
