GW vs Kidd: Answer to our P&R woes?
Aside from tonight we haven't adequately covered the P&R. We switch way too often. But tonight, I saw something interesting in the 4th q: J-Kidd was manned by Gerald Wallace with LMA on Dirk! GW fought the picks HARD but when they eventually had to switch, Dirk found GW sufficiently strong enough a defender. The only problem I had with the lineup was there was no PG on the floor; GW brought up the ball a few times and it led to a turnover and several nailbiting posessions. Is there a feasible way to put in Dre and have him guard Jason Terry/JJ and find another defender for Marion (maybe Batum or even Roy)? In fact, now that I write that, I think Marion might be the easiest cover for Roy!
Should we pay greg?
I'll keep it short, since we've discussed this before, but I want to get an idea of what people think on this issue. Obviously, you wait and see what he is offered. But lets take the next step: Greg is offered a 32mil 4 yr (1 yr team option) contract. What do you do? Do you take the gamble or walk away? My take is, In light of Brandon's knees, I would actually TAKE the gamble. If there's on Brandon and no Oden, there's no championship potential. LMA + Batum are good compliments but neither is a carry for a championship team. If Oden busts, you blow it up and start trying to go young again in a few years. To me, the risk is minimal (cap is caught up, lampooned nationally), but the reward is huge, IHSH. So what do you think? Would you pay the man?
New Rule idea
With the GO injury tsunami hitting us now, I have an idea for a new rule in the NBA to benefit teams that are hamstrung by these injuries.
Remember the first year we had greg and he was injured before he played? His contract was essentially postponed a year if I recall correctly. Why not have that always be the case? Better yet, how about this: If a player is ruled to have a season ending injury (by an independent doctor) causing them to miss say 60 games, their contract is put on hold for a year. They no longer count against the cap for that year and their contract is postponed. Alternatively, if a player plays less than 22 games in a given year, the team has an option they can exercise to forgo that delay and simply pay the player 1/2 their expected pay for that year and not have the contract delayed.
What do you think?
Bynum out until November?
Gotta love that ESPN, lovers of the injury prone label for GO, even after the equally ridiculous history of one Andrew Bynum limit their critique to "Bynum's injury history is piling up".
But that's ESPN for you.
Haaa-haaa! Nelson out of GSW
Nelly taken out to pasture and Keith Smart to take over. Man that guy is smooth! (credit to cavejuntionblazer)

JaVale McGee wants it more?
i cant believe that javale is on the national roster now and LMA isnt there.
Had we taken Durant...
And everything played out the same to date otherwise (he became the same player he has been on OKC), would you have been willing to swap Roy for CP3 straight up? Just curious... PS: I wish I could work in a AWoj rumor to join together the triumvirate of BlazersEdge hated topics ;)
miami lands wade + bosh
its now official
what about oden?
After his injury, there were whispers out of pdx that come playoffs oden may be able to suit up. optimistic whispers. "so you're telling me there's a chance!" whispers, but whispers nonetheless. If we do the unthinkable...if we beat the Suns...will those whispers grow louder?
Will Reke be back the next 2 weeks?
i didn't get a chance to see the game last night. is he down for sure for the next 2 weeks? i got him in fantasy bball and he's helped lead my team to 1st place but i need him for the playoffs. If he's out, you think the extra touches are going to omri udrih hawes or who?
When is Bosh coming back?
does anyone know? I just want the latest on his injury. I read somewhere that tomorrow was the earliest but does it look like its not severe enough to last longer than a week more than that? could he be shut down for the season? Thanks!
Would you trade LMA for Josh Smith?
i don't have any trade proposal or any delusions that this would happen but its a slow news day so I wanted to get people talking. So: Would you trade LMA for Josh Smith? Which would be a better fit for us? Who (aside from Bosh) would you want for LMA?

Nate needs to be a better communicator.
I don't wanna fish through all the interviews but after the spat, Nate was asked: Andre has been vocal about not knowing his place with the team. How would you describe his place right now? That's a conversation for us [Nate and Andre] if that's the case. He is either maintaining deniability that Dre is not unhappy (which wouldn't make sense given the outcry) or implying that they have not had any conversation regarding Dre's frustration at his role. You know, if this was the first time there was a failure between Nate and a player to communicate, I would let it slide but this isn't. This is the 2nd to 3rd. In fact, this is the 3rd PG with which he has had tension. The 3rd PG who everyone clearly knows has to be upset with their lot and looking for more. The 2nd that spilled over the top and eventually had a falling out with the coach. Sergio wasn't nearly as good but he went through almost all the same steps, towing the "professional" line, waiting and not getting rewarded in the end despite progress and then ultiimately boiling point reached-->griping. The 3rd is Bayless. Bayless to my knowledge did not gripe to the media but I bet he was close. Even while Blake played bad, Bayless didn't really move up much. Rumors were cropping up before the injuries and he couldn't have been happy being demoted back to 3rd PG to play the most garbage of garbage time (bc nate never pulls starters). And now even while Blake is injured and out Andre still doesn't close games. Its no wonder he's frustrated. Go figure.

dude its 3 games
get over it. it happens. look at the celtics last season. they didnt panic, why are we? you don't judge a team by how well they do when theyre doing well, its how well they bounce back from their hardest of times.

Are we overreacting?? Just how much is wrong and how can we fix it.
Look last year the Blazers played over their heads. I did not expect them to do as well as they did. It required a huge season end push to get them there. They raised my expectations. There's no doubt the Blazers have more talent this year than last-chemistry be damned. So what gives? Why are we losing/not looking like the team we used to? *We have injuries we are underrating: Batum is H U G E. While Cunningham will (guaranteed) be light years better than Outlaw, we are sorely missing Outlaw right now. He may not look good doing it but he's one of the best recipients of a FBP and manages to create in spite of stagnant offense. Hell, he may be the only player that thrives when our offense stagnates. *We did better than expected last year, especially given our youth. *Teams are adjusting to our offensive sets. Just like players who come into the NBA with 1 solid weapon (Rudy's 3 comes to mind), we thrived until the defense adjusted to our strengths. Now its on us to take the next step and add to our repetoire. Which leads to.... *Greg Oden. Man is a monster. He is the X-Factor. But we still aren't used to playing with him. It will take time to iron out the bugs. When he comes out of the game, the offense is all of the sudden confused. Suddenly you have both Blake and Przy as offensive non-starters and teams take advantage and collapse extra on Roy. *Speaking of Roy, anyone else think that time he took away from bball this summer may have been a mistake? He looks sloppy dribbling, a step slow, and like he expected to be able to come back and just 'turn it on' like Nate said at season's start. Roy would do well to realize how much work they put in last season to get where they did. And for god's sake, 1/2 from the line is not acceptable. *But back to Nate, he needs to show flexibility and creativity. Flexibility in playing the hot hand (kudos for giving Oden 30+ this game vs Miami, even if we lost, he looked great and it was the right move) and creativity in offensive schemes. He could do the latter by trusting Andre more. *Andre has a knack for the "super assist". He needs more time and looser reigns. He is bringing Oden out of his shell and motivating him. Sure Oden was OK with not touching the ball, but do you see how his eyes light up now? I mean, come on, he says "my bad" to Roy for not aiming his block into Roy's hands. Let Andre's creativity come to the forefront and shine. There's a lot more that could be said but I have a lot of work to get back to so I'll open it up to comments. We are on a 3 game losing streak but so what. 12-8 is still above the BS line.
Can we get a limit on Oden v Durant posts?
Maybe we should make it the anti-trade post. Trade post ban time means you can compare oden/durant and vice versa. Its getting old.

Individual Observations - Little Mac
First I would like to say Ben-you're doing a hell of a job on the recaps. You tell it how it is. No offense to Dave but yours are little to whimsical and G-rated for my taste and get a little too caught up on metaphors, but I like you're summary of this GSW game in the latest Minny pregame-its pretty accurate. Tonight's recap from Ben was excellent and hit on some important points but could have given even more attention to a topic that needs broaching: there was no individual observation for coach. This should be there good or bad so we can better see what works and what doesn't work for this team. A pulse on how is our "strategery" is working out. I'll try to fill in the gap for this game *gets out the whiskey*.
- Oden has outgrown his leash. He is TOO DOMINANT and changes the game too much to play him <20 mins. 2 fouls is too much for the 1st q not the 2nd q. What's the point of 'protecting' him if you don't bring him back in the game later on? I have a proposal: Play Oden non-stop until he gets 2 fouls or drops dead to the floor-whichever comes first. Then--and only then--sub him out. He's barely in his 20s for gods sake.
- Needing to "earn minutes". Bayless attacks the rim and plays hard defense posession after posession. He plays as well as he can within the offense and does not gripe about ANYTHING. He has shown he can defend quicker PGs better than Steve & Dre, yet when the latter get complacent, look out of sync, don't pay attention during time outs, and all around suck especially given the matchup, you still don't play bayless? THERE IS NOTHING MORE HE CAN DO TO PROVE HE DESERVES TIME.. Yes, this also means when Brandon gripes to the refs all game you set him until he gets less heated.
- Juwanna man Really? Really? Speaking of needing to earn minutes-you're going to play him over Dante or anybody else who has a pulse and put on a Blazers uniform? I woulda rather taken a random fan in Blazers jersey and plugged them in at the 4. Maybe we really were talking to Oakley...to suit up at age 45. Dante should be (and have been) getting those minutes. What gives with the fear of rookies? They gotta learn some time and THERE IS NOONE ELSE TO FILL THOSE MINS. Seriously, Nelson shows more confidence in his D-League call up than you show for Bayless+Dante combined.
- Game plan- So let me get this straight. Every time Oden touches the ball in the first quarter we get 2 points, a foul, or 2 points and the foul. Heck even Aldridge looked like a dominant post presence when he caught the ball in the post. But yeah, I would stop passing to Greg too. Especially since the bench is out of bounds..see point 1.
- More game plan- You CANNOT play andre + Przy when the offense is stagnating. Dre is not exactly an exemplary defender and he's predictable on offense-he'll never shoot consistently so teams will sag off (this is where Kidd set himself apart, he developed a bit of a shot to keep teams honest). And Przy is so bad offensively that I'm happy when he can catch the ball successfully. In summary, playing 3.5 on 5 on offense sucks. Playing 3.5 on 5 offense especially sucks when there is no defensive benefit.
- Even more game plan - this whole Roy iso thing is getting old. Teams are figuring it out and someone did some nerve damage to Brandon's hands becaues he apparently forgot how to dribble. Why are we not playing the 1-4 P&R or inside out with Oden more again
- Substitutions - For the love of all that is holy and good in this world please loosen up the lineup and sub according to performance instead of this cookbook crap. Hell if you want to cookbook it, I'll write up you're predictable recipe and we can give Haarlow your job. Its win win, Paul Allen saves money, and Haarlow's crush on LMA might just mean we get a few different looks offensively.
- Rudy Fernandez - Kudos on getting (only) this one right. He was hot and you kept in the game. He shows flashes of brilliance, as have several of our players. But back to strategery, we need to come up with more offense that involves less Brandon. Then when Brandon wants to take over its less predictable. I LOVED the play where Roy played decoy vs ATL and instead Rudy took the give and go inbounds and popped the unexpected 3. You figured Rudy had a shot at getting set up for the 3 but who woulda thought brandon doesn't get that inbound? We need more of that. Creativity on offense involving other players. Here, I'll start. I don't know why we don't have him in the game with Oden playing inside out. He's an excellent passer who can stretch the defense keeping them honest and giving Oden 1v1 play inside. How is this not the obvious play to run? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.
There's a lot more but I'm about to pass out. Note to self: drinking games triggered by opposing PG layups or fastbreak points are a BAD idea..so what do you think was good / bad about tonights coaching.
Fire Bill Simmons.
"Ultimately, should we forgive Simmons for his oversight, for his incorrect statement about Portlanders loving his book more than anyone and for potentially the worst typo of all time?" No. He is not even worth the 30 seconds I took to type this. ESPN: Fire Bill Simmons. Just put those 3 little words and nothing more in the comments section of his ESPN articles. That is all.

Armchair Coaching: Substitutions/Lineups.
Everyone and their mother has posted their philosophy on formulating a starting five and how substitutions work. Some think we should go KP-draft style: BPA at each position..others think we need to mix and match to maximize "chemistry"...yet others seem to think this is hockey and focus more on the 2nd unit. The starting line-up is pretty much set whether you agree with it or not: Blake, Roy, Batum, L-Train, Oden. Now I want to hear what everyone's thoughts are on what changes Nate should make to minutes and his substitution pattern from last year. I'll start:

Dude, where's my Greg?
Shouldn't he be at summerleague? 10 fouls per game that's about as close to NBA situations where he can be the focus and develop chemistry with bayless and condition himself for the season. How is he not there?
Are we looking at our offense all wrong?
Whenever we talk about PGs and Portland, what criteria do we throw out? Good 3 pt shooter, great off the ball. ..why? Because we've played give the ball to Roy and pray for the last few years? I ask this because I thought Roy was actually pretty good off the ball in the all star game. Granted there's no defense, but when paired with a star ball handler, Roy still managed to do pretty well. So why are we limiting our search (and our style of play)? And why in the world are we courting Hedo when we should be looking at the 1?
Why Rudy>>>Hedo
- He's cheaper.
- He's younger.
- He shoots the 3 at a higher %.
- He is better off the ball.
- He plays with more heart than anyone.

what are the rules on trade posts?
is there anywhere on BEdge that lays out rules or are there none? I ask because, as we saw last season, there end up being a ton of repeat posts that say basically the same thing or posts trying to rob teams of their superstar for our 3rd string PG. I'm not trying to call anyone out, and I don't want this place to be outright censored, but is there any sense/sensibility requirement for trade fanposts? I ask because I know the posts will build up as the draft nears and I feel like if I see another permutation to unrealistically land us LeBron Kobe and CP3 for Bayless, a bag of chips, and a re-signed LaFrentz, my heads going to explode.

I hope Oden outdoes this one day..
from ESPN: CLEVELAND -- Superman did some major damage. Orlando center Dwight Howard knocked down the 24-second shot clock above the basket with a ferocious dunk the first time he touched the ball in Wednesday night's Eastern Conference final against the Cleveland Cavaliers. After grabbing a rebound, Howard went up underneath and slammed the ball through with both hands and pulled on the rim for Orlando's first basket. The 24-second stanchion, a 5-foot-tall appendage that has cameras mounted to its top, then fell slowly backward. A maintenance crew came out with ladders but couldn't fix the clock. The shot clock at the opposite end was turned off and two portable units were placed on both baselines. A tape measure was then brought out to check if Howard had pulled the rim lower than its required 10 feet. Play was stopped for eight minutes. The clock that Howard dropped was fixed at halftime and the teams began the second half with both units functioning. Damn.
Can we play Rudy at PG?
We all talked about this before he came over and we saw stints of this during the playoffs. Rudy has an amazing abiliity to see a play before it happened (like that nic cage movie that i'm intentionally forgetting the name of).
Remember that throw ahead to Oden before he thunderously...missed the dunk? OK lets try this again. Remember the defy the laws of physics behind the back wrap-around pass in the preseason? How about the beautiful between the defender's legs pass to LMA? Inbounds ally-oop to Roy? I could go on and on but the fact is Rudy has muchos huevos and puts the ball on the mark. Once he puts weight on he will drive a little more and he has shown on the allyoops to improvise well once under the basket. He can obviously pop the 3. I think on offense, its safe to say he can more or less do the job-especially in the playoffs.
The problem is the defense. He clearly would have trouble with smaller PGs. That could prove too much of a negative and offset his offensive contribution. Would that be too much to give up? We Batum who has proven to be a versatile defender and could play on offense, Rudy/Roy as combo guards with Batum Aldridge & Odenzilla to round it out, and Batum on the PG, Rudy on the 2 and Roy on the 3 on defense,
Worth a shot?
Why do we need a banger PF?
Many people say lets go and get a back up banger 4. I got news for you. Those mins aren't gonna be there next season-certainly not in the post season when it matters. This year we rotated Przy & Oden at C with spot minutes from LMA and some minutes for travis at the 4. Next season? Greg's minutes should climb pretty quickly as he reconditions himself. I think you're gonna see that eat into LMA's time at the 5 and either Oden/Przy will be in the game at all times. You're already gonna have a banger option as Oden develops, and Przy is NOT a center who feels comfortable more than 2 feet from the basket-so where is this backup PF gonna operate when defenses stack the box/? We're gonna need a backup 4 for only 8-12 minutes a playoff game and that screams Outlaw. He mixes it up, Greg would mask his poor rebounding, and he gives a different look at opposing teams. He needs work, but that's another conversation altogether. At this point, I'm unconvinced that we need a backup banger 4. We could use a starting PG (and move Blake to the backup), but I don't see the need for a backup PF. And I would think experience/a few years would mold Batum into exactly what we need from our wing. So tell me, why do we need a backup PF?
anyone got that rip city revival video??
it never completely loaded for me and now i cant find it anymore...
Hollinger's Playoff Odds
Not that it means much, but we're finally getting some love. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/playoffodds Blazers have a 20% chance of making the finals and 9.7% chance of winning it all. We tied the #2 seed for the division title. Unbelievable!!!
blazers have 18% chance of making the finals
I don't like to rely too heavily on stats, but Hollinger now has the Blazers with a 100% chance of making the playoffs, finishing 4-3 for 52-30 overall and an 18% chance of making the finals.
The l*kers have only 36%.
We also have the 2nd best (in the west) chance to win it all: 7.4%
Yet somehow, with the way our team is playing right now, I'm not surprised. Funny how that works.
