He had to build it up on his own. His winning percentage was worse than his predecessor because his predecessor rampantly cheated and he had to dig the program out from that hole. And his successor took his talent just as it reached full blossom. Butch Davis is pretty much singlehandedly responsible for that Miami run. <br /><br />And while we're at it, I don't understand why everybody wants Mike Leach. For a window into what will happen if we get Leach, look to the Troy-LSU game last weekend. Troy was up 31-3, needing only to basically kneel the ball for the last quarter and a half for a guaranteed victory, and they continued throwing the ball, giving LSU time to come back, because that's what their ridiculous "system" says to do. I guarantee you that will happen at some point in a huge SEC game if we get Leach. Mike Leach is a gimmick coach who is having his first truly successful year right now, and for the life of me, I don't understand why everyone thinks we want him, but no one thinks we want Butch Davis.</p> <p>Butch Davis is the best coach on our list (with the possible exception of Gruden). He does not run a ridiculous gimmick offense, he runs a pro-style offense, which is still the best thing to run. Fulmer had that aspect right (well, at least until this year), and completely changing to some offense where our personnel don't fit would be an incredibly silly thing to do. Nebraska did that. Where are they? Michigan did that. Where are they? Plus, if you're complaining about someone who has no credentials on paper, how can you seriously be touting Mike Leach? The guy has done nothing. Oh sure, he's run up a bunch of stats, but he's won nothing. In my opinion, the surest way to ruin this program would be to hire Mike Leach.</p>
