McGregor Honored; Hurdle Was Possible Replacement
From the Rockies Blog on the Denver Post website, Renck wrote about the GM meetings' way of honoring Keli McGregor. In the write up, Renck mentions that Hurdle was considered a replacement for the president position. Of course, Hurdle just took the helm of the Pirates -- on the field where he prefers to be. Other little "start of the meetings" tidbits at the end of the blog entry.
Sports Illustrated: NL West Hot Stove Forecast
SI's annual Hot Stove report for each team in baseball (of course, this one focuses on the NL West). The breakdown provides record, RF/RA, Pythagorean record, Free Agents per team, Players with Options, Strengths/Weaknesses, and Possible Targets. This thing was written before the Olivo trade went down, but is interesting to read.
Ubaldo Repeats as NL Pitcher of the Month
Steve Foster's report of Ubaldo winning (and repeating as the) NL Pitcher of the Month. All I can say is keep it going, 'Baldo!
When Street Returns...
With the pen being mightier than the rotation, what about a Morales return to the rotation? I realize Frankie is not stretched out enough and was curious about his options (does he have any left?). Maybe send him down to get stretched out and then brought back up to be a starter. I was just thinking about how some people mentioned on here about putting Frankie back in the rotation sometime in the past. Wouldn't that be a good idea in the absence of some of these starters? Of course, this all hinges on Street's return (which is a ways off), but thought I'd throw it out there.
Street Visits Shoulder Specialist
Renck reports that Streeter visited world renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews, in Alabama today for a second opinion; the results of the visit were good. Here is to a speedy recovery, Streeter!
Jerry Schemmel, The New Voice of the Rockies
As mentioned in a Rockpile previously, Schemmel has received Jeff's spot in the booth. I can't wait for the season to start so I can get used to hearing his call!
Mentioned in fanpost about doing a Rockies Room. Not included in picture is a Rockies mini fridge, Colorado Rockies Ave sign, and another wall painted the Rockies' silver (like the part of the wall that juts out on left side of picture).
Torrealba to Giants? Schneider Plan B? RHB off bench?
Troy Renck chimes in on the Denver Post blog with a tidbit about a NL West rival (most likely the Giants) who has eyes for Yorvit, Brian Schneider as a possible back up to CDI, and some names for the RHB off bench. Bobby Crosby... hmm.
Update: Renck made the Schneider tidbit a linked article found here: http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_13845103
SI's Hot Stove: Colorado Rockies
This guy thinks a trade of Brad Hawpe to the Braves for Derek Lowe makes sense. Uh... Mr. Corcoran, there is this thing about contracts... anyway, interesting read.
Clint Hurdle, Texas Rangers Hitting Coach
According to MLB.com Rangers' beat writer, all signs point toward Hurdle getting hitting coach job. Glad to see him surface some place in the game.
Samuel Deduno called up for long relief
Rotoworld's fantasy player update shows Deduno being called up for long relief for the rest of the month.
Rockies Acquire Jose Contreras
As the Dodgers bulk up with Thome and Garland and the Giants get a roughed up Penny.
Jon Heyman: Rockies interested in Garland
In another tweet, he states the Rockies would be more likely to get Garland than the other team - the Yankees. However, staying in Zona is most likely option.
Rockies Acquire Beimel
After wanting him in the offseason, the Rox finally get their southpaw. No word on who is returning to Nats.
Mike Timlin Signed; Reports to Casper
Troy Renck's All About the Rockies blog brings us this little newsbit. Also includes the Hirsh trade for the dreaded PTBNL.
Like Renck said, no risk/high reward signing. Hopefully the depth helps out in September (Timlin, Herges, Speier, etc.) or we don't have to get to these guys and the bullpen gels well.
Connect to Rockies
Update: There was a previous fanshot that had a linked article that indirectly mentioned the Rockies weren't connecting with fans via Twitter. There is now a new button on the Rockies toolbar that has two baseballs connected with a rectangular oval called Connect to Rockies. On the page, there are links to facebook and a Twitter page that has yet to be created. Here is some proof that the Rockies are trying to connect to fans.
Atkins for Saito discussed; Rox to look at other options
Via Ken Rosenthal, Rox and BoSox have discussed an Atkins-Saito deal. I'm not overly impressed, but bullpen help is a plus. However, both teams will look at other options before continuing discussions. Also mentions Spilly being a Phillies' target at the bottom.
Torrealba reinstated; Phillips DFA'd
Renck brings this to light after the game in a post on the All Things Rockies blog on Denver Post.com. Find it interesting that Yorvit was pretty sure he was going to get traded. Renck has also made it a story here: http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_12732983.
Bedard to not go tomorrow (6/13)
According to the Jack Etkin Quick Hits link, Bedard has left shoulder inflammation and they're going to start Brendan Morrow instead on a pitch count. I'm liking our chances now in this game, but anything can happen. Thought I'd draw your attention to it.
CarGo era starts tonight!
CarGo starting left field tonight. Exciting news! Also a statement from Yorvit's agent about the situation.
Ken Rosenthal thinks Rockies to begin selloff...
This is something you will normally see from Ken Rosenthal when a team is in the tank like the Rockies. He sees Hawpe as a fit for pitching rich Tampa. Atkins is receiving no interest and a mention of the albatross contract of Helton's. What do you guys think? I'm ready to see CarGo cruising the field, but secretly want to clone Hawpe so he stays.
Spilly on MLB Home Plate, March 30th
I thought I'd share what I heard tonight and will probably do a poor job of reporting since I was coming home late from work. Around 9:30 CST, Joe Castellano of MLB Home Plate MLB Live Week Day Edition welcomed Spilly onto the program. They discussed batting averages -- how Helton and Spilly have hit this spring training, the team and psychology -- Spilly's major at UC Santa Barbara. Anyway, a big highlight or two for me was when he was talking about the team. He went ahead and took the words right out of Joe's mouth saying 'yeah, we miss and will miss Holliday. You can't replace the type of production coming from that one guy; however, we can't be carried by one guy into the World Series. We need to put trust in the other guys around us and pick ourselves up to succeed. If we get stuck worrying about our batting averages and have a bad week, then it is going to continue on down the road. The season is long... if we stay humble and realize that the game is full of failure and learn how to deal with it, the good things will come along for us. It was probably best that we failed last season so we could realize this.' A lot of that was paraphrased, so I apologize for goofing that up, but that was the majority of the message Spilly had to share.
I was excited to hear another Rockie being spoken to on this program -- it has been crazy when I actually get to hear one of them talk about what is going on (Grilli and Baker to name two others who were brought on the same program). Joe did mention at the end of the Rockies were a team to look out for. No one is picking them and they could surprise. I am definitely in the boat. I am excited about what they bring to the table. I just hope all goes well and as Spilly put it, stay away from the injuries. After they experience injuries, they just can't seem to get things going again.
Go Rockies!
Spilly signs with Boras...
Didn't know if any of you caught this, but in the article from the RMN titled "Rockies Report: Francis Undergoes Surgery", it states that Spilly has made the change from Danny Evans, a former Dodger GM-turn agent, to Scott Boras. According to Spilly, it was time to make a change.
Thoughts?
My first reaction is grrrrrreat... but whatever. If I was a ballplayer, I would hire the guy to get me the best deal out there, too.
