Buffalo Rumblings Breaking Down The Bills' Offensive Play Selection

Earlier, Brian wrote his article on how the Bills must fix their rushing game. I had made a comment on how I didn't think Chan Gailey even really wanted to run the ball as much. Of course, Brian had to call me out to prove the point I was claiming. After some back and forth, he gave me an idea for some parameters to look at.

So that's what I did: I went through (using ESPN.com's play by play) and broke down the games.

Here were the parameters:

  1. Play selection in the first thru third quarters when the team was down one score or less (I went ahead and counted eight points as down one score). I also, of course, counted every play when the Bills were leading (by whatever score).
  2. Play selection in the fourth quarter (and OT) when the team was down one score or less, or leading.

There were some interesting (and some sad) developments I found... check it out after "the jump."

I know its not really Bills related......but it is NFL related.

Personally I love it......Cromartie is my new favorite player in the NFL.

Luck doesnt come out and say it, but Coach Harbaugh certainly feels he's ready after this year.

Lots of good things in here from former Bills WR Eric Moulds. Eric gives his opinion on the organization as it is now, as it was when he was playing, and how he would fix the team.

Interesting take about the Flutie/Johnson situation as well. Enjoy.

So MLB Trade rumors got a hold of Type A and B Free Agent rankings. Hideki Matsui is the only Angel on the list. I wouldn't mind a supplemental pick for Matsui.....

What say you?

Buffalo Rumblings It feels alot like 2006 around here (minus the wins)

I was just sitting at work thinking about it. Doesnt this 2010 version of the Buffalo Bills feel like 2006?

After "the jump" I'll post some similarities.

ST/reserve D player James Ihedigbo had this to say on his twitter post last night.

"Leaving Buffalo whooped them bums great team win let's go JETS..... Men on a mission!!!! "

Sigh.

Well sorry for getting everyone in a tizzy...(or a minor tizzy I guess) Joique sets the record straight himself. Darn you Paul Peck of WIVB!

Per Chris Brown...

Probably a good move for Donte if true.....for many OBVIOUS reasons.

I hadnt seen this mentioned at all yet. Looks like Perry held out as long as he could.

"I thought I did a good job in the interview process the first time," Fewell said. "So, yes, I did expect a second interview."

I would have been much happier had the Bills retained Perry and hired on Gailey as OC (as Tim Graham suggests in his article)

Oh well.......

Buffalo Rumblings My argument against Chan Gailey: age

Ed. Note, by Brian Galliford: I disagree with the thesis put forth by this FanPost - see arguments made by wilgarr15 and kaisertown in the comments section - but the discussion is just intriguing enough to make our front page for more play. End Note

I know many people are against Chan Gailey as the Buffalo Bills' new coach, and there are some that are okay with it. The main reason I'm against it is because he's too old. This is a young person's league. There's a precedent here, and I'm going to prove my point by going back through the last 20 years or so; in doing so, you'll see that coaches over 55 years of age are just not that successful when it comes to winning championships. I know we are a long, long, long way from a championship here in Buffalo, but that should be the ultimate goal, should it not?

After the break, I'm going to list the Super Bowl winner and the age of the championship coach at time of said championship. Hopefully, you will see what I mean.

Buffalo Rumblings Get to know your fellow Rumblers

I know there is plenty going on right now as we're still awaiting word on our new Head Coach (who I believe is Frazier) but inbetween that time I thought maybe it would be nice if we had a place where we could get to know some of the newer members of our community. I know we have had a lot of new members join this season, and its awesome to know our community has grown despite of the fact that the team hasnt been all that successful. I know sometimes we get into heated discussions with each other, and I thought maybe this post would help shed some light on all of our personalities in this awesome place!

Anyways I guess since Im making this I will start after the jump.  And I do apologize for the length in advance.

Buffalo Rumblings Anyone know of any updates on Kevin Everett?

So Im sitting at work today thinking about the unfortunate situation regarding Len Bias (with ESPN's 30 for 30 story on "Without Bias" premiering tonight.)

Truly a sad and unfortunate story. I of course was too young to remember it as I was only 3 1/2 years old when it happened. It got me thinking about the devestating death of Angels Starting Pitcher Nick Adenhart in early April of this year....and the murder of QB Steve McNair.....which in turn reminded me of another tragic incident involving one of our very own Buffalo Bills - TE Kevin Everett.

Buffalo Rumblings Fun little game if you are bored.

via img407.imageshack.us

So I figured we could have a lil fun on here......I stole this idea from a Halos Heaven poster.

Pretty much all you gotta do is go the NFL Shop and select a custmonized jersey and create a fun little name (inside jokes are so much more fun) As you can see I took KO for my first one...as the example.

I know there are tons of creative guys around here so lets see what kinda pre draft fun we can have.

Incase you havent caught it before......FUN is the word of the day :)

The Commish is setting a good example for others to follow...although I think making 11 mil a year is crazy salary for a football Commish its nice to see he's willing to sacrifice money for the good of the league........too bad many people in other power positions dont always do the same.....Good on you Mr Goodell.

Buffalo Rumblings Buffalo Bills football cards

So being a Northern California native I dont get the chance to go to many stores that sell Bills stuff.

Today I happened upon a sports memorabilia store. They had sports cards seperated by teams for all sports. So I took a look at the Bills and Angels cards. (The lady looked at me like I was crazy for asking for the Bills cards......ha)

I found some interesting stuff

I found two Thurman Thomas rookie cards (SCORE brand) in solid cases going for 4 bucks......and I bought one because Thurman is my all time fav Bill.

Found a Trent Edwards rookie card (BOWMAN brand) for a 1.50 and since Trent is my current favorite Bill I thought, heck what a deal.

Couldnt find any Bruce Smith cards.........

But also interesting of note.

Found about 40 cards of JP Losman some as high as 10 bucks!!!!!!!!! and many over 5! and I had to laugh out loud......

Found a Mike Williams card for 5 bucks

and most shocking I found a card of Kwame Cavil for 7 bucks!!!!!!

You may be asking who the heck is Kwame Cavil ( I know I did) which is why I came home and googled him.........Guess he was drafted by the Bills in 2000 played in all 16 games and had 4 catches for 66 yards and no TD's..........I dont ever remember him suiting up at all.....but I admit I didnt always follow the team as closely as I do now (Having the internet and blogs help.......didnt have that when I was 17......plus I was more interested in picking up some skirt anyways)

Anyways I thought it was nuts that I could get a player who is in the Hall of Fame (not to mention a rookie card) for 4 bucks.........but in the same stack I could find the biggest number 1 bust in Bills History and some Scrub WR who hasnt played in the NFL since 2000 and the CFL since 2006..........for more money....just crazy.

Wondering if anyone else out there has had similar experiences.

Buffalo Rumblings Rex Ryan new head man for Jets

Hadnt seen this mentioned yet on site. It's kinda a big deal I think. I know everyone is all about talking draft and everything which is all well and good. However when one of our AFC EAST sisters makes a move like this kinda affects us too.

I am wondering what everyone thinks of Ryan becoming the new head coach?

I actually dont think its thats good of a signing by the JETS I have a feeling Rex will turn out to be like his Dad.......great as a coordinator, not so great as a head man. Which works out great for the Bills.

What say you?

If this is true.....and the Bills fail to make the playoffs again.....this should be the number 1 guy Ralph should go after...

It would restore some faith in Ralph methinks.

The Ralphie Report What to Expect from New CSU HC Steve Fairchild...(From a Buffalo Bills' Fan)

I had made a comment in a pregame thread and one of the editors of the site asked me if I wouldn't mind throwing up a quick fanpost of what to expect from Steve Fairchild (The former OC of the Bills and newest HC of the CSU Rams).

Well considering how much disdain I have for the man from his two years in Buffalo, I am happy to oblige.

Now I can't promise I will be a 100% correct, because people can change, but based on the talent level he has at CSU, and that he had with the Bills...I am fairly certain you can expect the follow things from Steve Fairchild.

He will try to "ball control" a team using a lot of "dives" and screen plays. He is the most predictable play caller I've ever seen. Things were so bad last year that Rich Gannon (who was broadcasting a game) was able to "call out" the plays before they were even run.

Fairchild is from the Mike Martz coaching tree. So he believes in trying to create space for his players, however he tends to send multiple WR in the same general area, which makes it easy to defend against his offense.

He also doesn't believe in "audibling" so once the play call goes to the QB there is a slim to none chance the QB will check off to something else.

Look for a a lot of dump passes (especially) in 3rd and long situations, which I assume the Rams will be in a lot.

If by some chance Fairchild and Co. have a short yardage situation you can believe he will bring in 2TE and go with a jumbo package and try to get that yardage by going power for power...and usually that play gets stuffed by the bigger defensive line.

He rarely tries to trick the offense...and when he does try a trick play it will be something along the lines of a WR reverse on 3rd and 10 when the defense is playing a zone, thereby eliminating any chance to deceive a defense.

Either way, I know it will take a year or two for Fairchild to get his guys but even then I highly doubt the Buffs' defense will have a problem with an offensive "guru" ( I use that term loosely) like Fairchild...I would much rather have a guy like Dan Hawkins leading my team...be thankful for that.

Good Luck Buffs...beat the tar outta that clown!

Buffalo Rumblings Is Turk Schonert for real?

Well with a day or so to reflect on the latest game for the Bills, I find myself asking the question: Is Turk Schnoert for real? Is he really the anti-steve fairchild?

Of course the jury is still out, but the early returns look good for his offense and his play-calling. In back to back weeks he’s had two different QB’s put up pretty respectable play.

He’s done a masterful job of mixing up the play calling and the tempo by which the offense operates. Granted some of his success can be contributed to the fact that NFL teams have yet to really get a gauge on him.

Schonert is a Bill Walsh (west coast - ball control style) student. He has made it a point to try and focus on getting the ball out to his playmakers in space and letting them…..well…….make plays (novel concept right?)

I have yet to see Schonert completely open up the offense and send the ball down the field. That can be attributed to the fact that it is the preseason (and no need to show off everything right now) and also to the fact that there really hasnt been a need for the “long ball”

It will be interesting to see if Schonert utilizes any “trick plays” in his offense………….of course it can be said that Offensive Coordinators only use trick plays as a way for compensating for a lack-luster offense.

The key for the Bills offense this year will be to score TD’s in the redzone and to sustain drives long enough to keep the defense fresh. So far in the first two games…….Schonert has proved to “fit the bill.”

Halos Heaven Tough loss today.....but heres a look at the bright side

I dont know how many folks know this or not....but the Halos havent lost a series to an AL team since they were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays back in May (9-11) That was almost 3 months ago!!!!!!

I went back and looked over the results and this is what I've found since that time.

Halos "series" record is an amazing 17-3-3. (all 3 series losses were to NL teams and 2 were in middle of june on back to back series: ATL and NYM)

Thats alot of wins. So even though the angels lost the last two of this series to the yankees the angels still managed a tie and have the best record in baseball. Hopefully this helps brighten some people's day!

Halos Heaven Asking for help from fellow Halo fans

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum, not sure whether to do this in a fan post or fan shot......

I have the opportunity to go to one game probably this year (since money is tight and I cant miss that much work.) What i would like help with is knowning is:

Where is the best place to get tickets for me? (since i dont live in SoCal)

Where would be the best place for me to sit? ( I would like to be close to the action but not have to pay an arm and/or a leg) I have to factor in gas to drive there and back.

What series should I try to get down for?

I appreicate all input since most of you guys here are more in tune with the goings on at the Big A.
