christ you know it ain't easy
being a prophet is never easy
nook and jack = shockers
sorry, but that's a real heartbreaker and shocker in both cases.
sluggers for sale
imagine, if the CA condo market was still soaring instead of going belly-up, we might be splurging on one of these guys - anywho...
the al west needs 5 teams
time to face facts, kids, the out-of-whack league setup isn't working. it exacerbates the quirkiness that comes with the crosstown interleague 6 games, which seriously warped the schedule already.
let us now praise phamous men
if tonight's ESPN highlights of 90% phillies make you wretch, you may not want to watch the postseaston
the struggle with .500 NEXT year
this year is already into week 3 of glorified pre-spring training for the green and gold. I wish I could say that next year looked better.
final 13 established
barring a miracle, we have our 13 potential playoff teams. every single division in baseball has solidified into a 2-team race, with no one in either league pulling away from the pack enough to guarantee a wildcard WITHOUT a divisional win.
in the al, the race between the m's and yanks is the only story with any suspense or mystery to it. the angels and bosox are obviously wining their divsions, and there's no way an al central team grabs the wildcard.
in both leagues, the central is a steaming, funky garbage dump, with the worst teams playing the best baseball.
the nl race is a bit more interesting, with the nl west number 2 team fighting for space with 3 excellent nl east teams.
perhaps the most consistent theme is the excellence of offenses in the east in both leagues.
ichiro, eric byrnes, the yankees, a crumbling gagne - there could be worse entertainment for a west coast baseball fan.
byrnes, wash, kendall, thomas, bradley, hatteberg, zito, bradley, dye, payton, miggy...
if only we could afford the lineup of recently FORMER A's

this year's oddball interleague schedule
well, that should conclude the strangest series of the mlb schedule for many teams.
anyone else sentimental about mt davis?
really, beyond the whole 'al ruined it' spiel, will anyone else miss the coliseum?
the west is the best
how did it happen? the sport of old new york has the best young and pro talent on the opposite coast.
buck ROTY chatter officially begins
let me do my part to kick off annoying early talk about seasonal awards
and so the clock strikes 4...
As we hit game 54 (actually a bit more for the Golden States Athletics of Fremont) we officially come to a close of the first third of the season. Normally, people wait until the all-star break to pratter on about this crap, but I'm not normal....
baseball: a physically punishing game
Any A's fan knows that baseball is a sport which can be physically rough. Yesterday featured a nasty collision potentially ending a star player's year for the reds, and a truly bizarre play where a pitcher took a horrible throw back home to the face (tampba bay/detroit).
almost interleague, creeping bullpen fatigue
today's phil hughes injury and papelbon blowout highlight an interesting juncture in the season, much like the scutaro shot against rivera.
some teams have already racked up an impressive number of losses (yankees, phillies, texas, kc) while some teams have surprised us with an impressive ability to close games (brewers... well, actually, just the brewers)
the pitcher with the most wins has a sky-high ERA, while the ace of last year's AL champions has barely squeaked in a single win despite tons of IPs and a tiny ERA.
the best day of the season until august
ladies and germs, we may have already seen the best day of the season today. the matinee was awesome.
2007 A's - year of the hair
obviously, i'm not the first to note that this is obviously the year of the coif.
that lineup was the worst in years
meanwhile, thomas crushes a grand slam.
anyways, piazza looks awesome, swisher is getting more patient and crafty every year, ellis and chavy were solid, shannon passable, but why the third-tier rivercats everywhere else?
did anyone really expect to win with that 6-9 opening order?
i've done a little homework, and i'm ready
these are my opinions on the 2007 season. feel free to hold them up for admiration and/or ridicule come october, and or at any time before then. please feel free to change my mind about any of these, and remember that they may reflect other factors (matsuzaki) at large... let's go!
a very brief rant re the DH rule
Bruce Jenkins, in his recent eulogy of ex-commish Kuhn, moaned a bit about the early 70s in baseball, specifically the introduction of the DH. He lumped this in with 40 degree night games, polyester unis with garish colors, and uninspired play due to multiyear contracts.
WRONG!
NL baseball is SIGNIFICANTLY more boring to watch thanks to batting pitchers. How many times have i watched an NL game, with a guy or two on and only one out in the 2nd or 3rd (or 5th or 6th), thinking, 'cool, we may get a run here'... but wait... that's the number 8 guy batting... which means that if doesn't get a hit, we're almost certain to see a chump pitcher come up and absolutely kill anything resembling momentum. That's boring. I hate it.
I was happy to see the cards win, but, really, AL baseball is infinitely superior, and it isn't just the fact that the teams are substantially better.
caveat: Dontrelle is a quality batter, and I hope to see him wear the green and gold one of these days. But that's the only exemption that comes to mind.
