Pinstripe Alley Big Surprise! Tim McCarver is an idiot...

Just read this story on Yahoo's Big Leauge Stew, apparently Timmy boy thinks that the Yankees are comprable to Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia because he thinks we have airbrushed Joe Torre from our history. However I can't really express his idiocy in my own words, so I'll let McCarver do the talking.

"You remember some of those despotic leaders in World War II, primarily in Russia and Germany, where they used to take those pictures that they had ... taken of former generals who were no longer alive, they had shot 'em. They would airbrush the pictures, and airbrushed the generals out of the pictures. In a sense, that's what the Yankees have done with Joe Torre. They have airbrushed his legacy. I mean, there's no sign of Joe Torre at the stadium. And, that's ridiculous. I don't understand it."

Soooo that's pretty much it. Not only is it stupid, but it is actually factually incorrect. There are several pictures of Torre with championship banners throughout the stadium and in the luxury boxes. I mean HONESTLY, comparing a professional sports team to some of the most evil dictators in history? Please FOX, save us from this idiotic, unintelligible dumbass on our beloved Yankee broadcasts.

Pinstripe Alley Mariano and Cervelli

Yahoo's Big League Stew Blog is pretty good for avid baseball fans like myself, and they have a semi-regular feature where they give an image from baseball and ask for funny captions for it. Well upon checking the blog for the latest news I saw they had two of our favorite Yankees in a photo looking for a caption.

Ept_sports_mlb_experts-595260329-1276027757_medium

And I thought who would be better to come up with the best caption for a showdown of Yankee legends, than the Cervelli worshipers and Mariano followers on this site. They came up with some captions but I am sure that the PA copy editing community can do better.

So either vote for your favorite Yahoo caption or come up with one of your own!

Pinstripe Alley Fantasy Trade Grades

So those of you who are in the PA Yahoo Fantasy league have been a witness to a flurry of fantasy trades, including three from my own team. Now despite people saying I had a good draft I am still a fairly new fantasy player and would appreciate an outsider's view of the trades I have made and whether they were good for me or not.

The Trades:

I give:

P Felix Hernandez
OF Carlos Beltran

Moose35 gives:

P Ryan Dempster
OF Ryan Braun

I give:

1B Russell Branyan
OF Torii Hunter
SP Jair Jurrjens

Baseballers give:

1B-3B Kevin Youkilis
OF Mike Cameron
SP Hiroki Kuroda

I give:

SP Jake Peavy
RP Alfredo Aceves

Number Seven gives:

SP Jorge De La Rosa
RP Brian Wilson

So are these any good or should someone confiscate my computer?

Big Blue View The Playoff Dilemma

So Giants fans, we face a dilemma, who to root for in the playoffs. We all knew who to root against, the Cowboys, but now that they have been eliminated I have to figure out who, exactly, do I want to win the Superbowl. Now I'd rather it wasn't a team from the NFC, so that narrows it down. Originally I wanted Peyton to win, so that when Eli wins another the Mannings  would have a net total of four or five at the end of their careers.

But now I have to consider another option.

New-york-jets-logo_medium

Our same-stadium AFC team has a slight shot at winning the Superbowl if they continue their run. But how do I feel about their chances.

My knee-jerk reaction is to dismiss them and root against them, but I have come to reconsider. I mean come on they are from the same city as us. And it would be pretty awesome if NY wins 2 out of 3 Superbowls. So I guess that if they win I won't be too pissed, and hope that we can come back and win next year.

Pinstripe Alley Fantasy baseball! Huzzah!

Alright so ScoobySnacks started this idea for a Pinstripe Alley fantasy league. I think that this would be totally awesome with a bunch of other Yanks fans in the same league. BBV (the Giants Blog) already has a Pick'em competiton so we should do something too.

Several things to consider:

1. Head-to-head or rotisserie?

Head-to-head is an individual team vs. another individual team while roto is everyone vs. everyone with scoring based on different stats.

2. Which site to use?

MLB, Yahoo, and ESPN all offer decent fantasy leagues with minor differences. The biggest one is probably with the MLB leagues, where pitching staffs are chosen as opposed to individual pitchers in the other two,

3. How many leagues?

Judging from the last post, a lot of people want in on this and one league might not fit everyone. Might have to form different leagues.

4.What stats are most valuable?

Different leagues value stats differently. Some count HR more, or RBI, .SLG, etc. etc. We will have to decide which stat system is best.

Just thought I'd put this down in a post. We should get this done so it can be ready for baseball. Also should be an interesting little diversion to think about while we wait for pitchers and catchers...

Big Blue View An adjusting Yankee fan...

Football was never my sport. I looked and saw that the Giants won and said, 'oh, that's good right?" I was a football rube who didn't understand how the dang game was played. However my uncles soon remedied this with football in 2006 and madden games for my Wii. I was hooked. Since my uncles are Giants fans I was lucky enough to become a giants fan at EXACTLY the right time. Sure 2006 ended up badly but then 2007 made my football dreams come true. After that win I became a huge religious fan. Jerseys, tickets, bobbleheads, I got into it all.

But then I had my first major issue. The last off season, the first one I payed attention to, I was going " GET ALBERT HAYNESWORTH! GET T.J.! GET ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS!!! NOW!" Let me explain myself. I have been a lifelong Yankees fan, since 1995 when I was 4. And all the Yankee off seasons that I have witnessed have had MY team get the big name free agents. But due to the NFL salary cap and a more conservative ownership, my football team was not doing the same! How can I acclimatize myself to this? I cannot deal with offseasons where MY team gets anything but the best....

Pinstripe Alley Life after Jeter

The NY daily news ran this article yesterday about the contract negotiations next year for Derek Jeter. And I think they are making a big fuss about nothing. The Yankees have practically no choice in the matter. Resign Jeter or alienate their fan base a lot.

What I am really worried about is the fact that Jeter is already 35 and not getting any younger. He plays a tough position that requires a lot of athleticism, and a position that traditonally has not been used by older players.

How long can he play? 38?40? All I know is that when he finally retires that I will be really depressed for a year of baseball. No more announcing Derek 'Jeet-ah' by Shep on the PA. And no more Yankee Captain. Almost as long as I have followed baseball Derek Jeter has been a Yankee. When this era ends who will play the SS spot? Who will take the mantle of the captainship? Time will tell.

Pinstripe Alley Who would you like to see become a Yankee next year?

Where can our team improve? Should we stick with the team we got? Trade someone for a top notch pitcher?

The Yankees just won their 27th world championship. But if they want to win next year what kind of off-season moves need to be made?

Should they go after a big starter like John Lackey or Brad Penny?

Maybe add a new outfielder like Matt Holliday?

Also who to resign? Wang? Pettite? Damon? Matsui?

Off-season should be fun...

Pinstripe Alley Pitchers, Pitchers, everywhere but not a 4 to start!

Great season. But how far can the 2010 Yankees get without a full starting rotation?

Questions surround our rotation after the top two guys. Will Andy come back? Should Joba or Hughes start? Should Chien-Ming-Wang come back? Should we pursue Lackey? Maybe move a long reliever like Aceves into the starting role?

In the playoffs the single biggest thing that was mentioned as being a weakness for the Yankees was their need to use all of their starters on short rest. We need to address this especially if Andy decides to retire or sign with another team. I don't know about the rest of you but Chad Gaudin is not who I want as my regular no.4 starter.

Pinstripe Alley That. Was. AWESOME.

This was the second ALCS game I had been to. Ever. The last one was in 2004. I will not speak of those unmentionable days....

We are in the World Series. 7 games to prove ourselves better than the Phillies. We can do it. We slogged it out against the Halos and Twinkies. And now I want to eat those Philly cheese steaks!

Normally I would say something nice about the angels. But I am not going to. Throughout the series their douche bag fans all badmouthed us and the umpires for their own mistakes. Blaming everyone but themselves for losing to a superior team. Grow up HH. You Lost. It's over. We were better.

I can see it coming. 27 will be ours. We will triumph. We will conquer. We will WIN!

EDIT: Alright. I realize that not all Angels fans are Rev (aka Rush Limbaugh) Halofan. But enough of them were acting like this for me to generalize. Some were classy and they know who they were. So to them i tip my hat and say great series.

Quick shoutout to anyone who happened to be in section 426. Awesome section. GO BEEFY!

Pinstripe Alley The spit heard round the world

Alg_yankees_mariano_rivera_medium

If this is legitimate then the Baltimore Orioles are winning the series next year.

Come on people.

Mariano Rivera the single greatest closer of all time. Not to mention being a stand-up moral guy who has never caused controversy. EVER. And I expected there to be the usual baseball seizure up until he was proved innocent (which he was). What's disappointing in is those bastards at Halo's Heaven. One ounce of bad evidence and they're jumping all over this guy like he's Jose Canseco. Have an ounce of class. Just an ounce. Maybe a bad joke or two but to post two massive stories first accusing him of taking 'roids and then calling the commissioners finding dubious and calling for Mo to be kicked out of baseball. When Vlad was struggling before the series I saw plenty of jokes here. But also I saw respect. A fair number of Pinstripe alley users have a man crush on Vladdy.

We already knew that LA fans were not real baseball fans (see Thunder sticks). But to sink this low? Rev Halofan, I condemn you and your lackeys to be defeated in the ALCS. Go Yankees. Go Rivera.

Pinstripe Alley BULL!(pen)

Awesome win. Was anyone else pacing a hole in the floor because of just how desperate our bullpen situation was at the end of the game. If it wasn't for David Robertson doing his clutch/beast trick we woulda been in some real trouble. To me this seems to be Girardi's biggest fault. He plays the bullpen like it's the All-Star game!!! "okay now this guy gets .1 innings..." If there were only short relief guys in the Pen i would understand. But not letting guys like Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes go a little longer in a tied game late? He seems to be thinking that these are the roles set for Joba and Hughes, 7th and 8th innings respectively. We escaped this time thanks to Aceves getting in some strong pitching and getting out of some jams as well as Robertson. However we cant expect to escape all the time. If Girardi cannot fix this we will pay for it down the road.

Pinstripe Alley Lets do some (yawn) STATS!!

Oh well. The playoffs sure were fun. But since we're about to face the angels and their mighty THUNDER BATS might as well go home and not watch. Maybe they'll sweep! Save me some misery. Hmmm? What's this? MLB team-by-team stats? Oh well lets go look at how vastly superior the Angels are.

Interesting! It seems that the boys out west have been taking a little too much sun and not actually looking at the facts. So let's break down our regular seasons shall we?

Pinstripe Alley Nicknames!

Personally my favorite has always been the Bronx bombers, but the Evil Empire does have a certain something. Derek Jeter is Darth Vader while Hal is the Emperor. The Yanks is a little simple but hey it is easier to say. The uniform has always been awesome so the pinstripes isn't too unimaginable. Some Nick names that other teams came up with, the damn Yankees, which is hilarious. Or the Bronx Zoo for old timers who remember the 70's and REGGIE!

Pinstripe Alley Money!

First off that win was Epic. I thought I would go into cardiac arrest when A-Rod hit that HR. Secondly, yes that call on Mauer's double was bull but these things happen.

What really bugs me is that people keep saying things like, 'yanks buying it again', 200 million dollars gets the win...

Sure. It's true. We have the largest payroll in Baseball. However what people constantly overlook is that we are also in the biggest market in baseball. The New York Metropolitan area has approximately 19 million people in it, making this the largest metropolitan area in the United States. WE HAVE MORE PEOPLE. This means more fans, tix sales, merchandise sales, YES subscriptions, the whole shebang. Also the Yankees are only a subsidiary of Yankees Global Enterprises LLC. This enterprise runs both the Yankees as well as YES network. Since Yankee games can (usually) only be watched on YES we have to subscribe. This makes the team RICH! If we have that money does Steinbrenner pocket it? No. He improves the team. He spends the Yankees' money to get the free agents.

We have a team that can, will, and does make money. If it does that why shouldn't we spend it?
