obsessivegiantscompulsive is my blog.
I love a healthy, constructive debate about my favorite team, but respect that everyone has their own opinion.

"I'm really proud to be on this team." - Nate Schierholtz
"The objective is that World Series ring" - The Kid
"Attempting [to match Maddux and Johnson's 4 straight Cy's] just comes back to being a student of the game and never settling. A lot of guys can just sit on things they did. I could have easily sat on things I did last year and bounce off it. I just wanted to become better." - Lincecum
"A lot of swearing, a lot of screaming – and a lot of alcohol." - The Kid, about the playoffs
"The objective is that World Series ring" - The Kid
Posey is relaxed in the playoffs "because it's fun."
"Woo hoo!" - Tim "The Kid" Lincecum
"I think my role here has changed a little bit. I'm counted on a little more." - Posey after hitting 12-24 with 4 homers after Molina trade
"Every victory is tasty, but this one was real delicious." - Brian "Fear the Beard" Wilson
"We kicked their ass, we drank their whiskey, now we took their plane" Aaron Rowand

Adrianza #50 prospect? How? And Crawford #4?
There was a recent FanPost discussing one fan's (and paid commentator) Top 50 ranking, and I didn't see it until now: http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2010/3/2/1333860/one-more-prospect-list-sfdugout
I don't see how Ehire Adrianza can be placed 50th, behind so many other suspects. Likewise, how is Brandon Crawford then 4th? Since that post is old, I put this here as I want to see how others feel about this, is this a big issue, small, meh?
To me, making Adrianza 50th makes the methodology of this ranking seem very questionable. Then making Crawford 4th in the list, is even more mind bending.
What is wrong with Giants trainers?
We all know the drill: Giants vet gets hurt but not hurt enough to put on the DL, but ends up missing 7-14 days/games anyway, then repeats again later in the season, missing more games, or just performs poorly.
The names we know: Durham, Alou, Winn, Roberts, Rowand, Uribe, Renteria, Aurilia. Why does it seem like Giants players always sit around on the bench with these semi-injuries? Or come back from these performing poorly? Why don't the Giants just DL them for 15 days and make do? Why don't the Giants just let them rest and get well instead of running them out there, taking up a spot on the bench, useless?
Especially hamstrings. Except for Barry Bonds, I would have prefered the Giants just DLed anybody who tweaked their hamstring in the last 5 years, because it seems like they spend at least a week doing the "will he/won't he" dance before finally playing again. Just get it well.
And isn't there a way to detect bone spurs or something? Both Roberts and Renteria have been busts offensively because they had bone spurs that needed operations. Roberts was fine once he had the operation, but if this could have been detected beforehand, then we don't sign him or Renteria.
Giants Sabermetrican Comes Out of the Closet
"I'm a little uncomfortable saying anything more than that,'' Shelley tells me. "What I can say is that analysis in baseball has gotten so sophisticated and it's changing all the time. I read, read, read - every baseball web site, every publication, everything. So Grant, Xanthan/Chris, everyone, keep up the good work, and know that someone within the Giants is reading what you write here.
Lincecum for Cy Young: Ballot Stuffing
I have a crazy idea but don't the time to deal with it, so I thought I would post this here in case anyone is as crazy (or more so) than I am.
I don't know who are the two NL beat writers who get to vote from each NL city for the Cy Young award, but what if someone puts together a nice Tim LIncecum stats package, find and post the beat writers e-mail addresses, and a number of interested Giants fans reading this would e-mail this stats package to each voter, perhaps we can influence the vote.
The genesis of this scheme is the common refrain I've heard over and over again about Lincecum's chances: he should win BUT the voters might not even be familiar with Lincecum's achievements, particularly the East Coast writers, other than that stats that show up in newspapers, wins, strikeouts. By a number of us sending such information, hopefully one gets through to the writer and he's informed.
Don't know if this would work, but it would sure be a heck of a story for the Internet age.
I would nominate Sharkrog to write up the standard boiler plate letter except that he might be too busy too.
OT: Pulse Smartpen
When I saw the ad for this product here, I just had to post about it.
This is absolutely amazing technology. Check out the demo videos at www.livescribe.com. This is the adult version of the Fly Pen that is targeted at kids. The pen's sweet spot is aimed mainly, I think, at college students, but they are also marketing it at business people because it would work fine in business settings, like at a conference or business meeting.
Basically anywhere you need to write down notes from a speaker, but sometimes (often on my part) miss something interesting or perhaps even can't hear that well.
Here's an Idea...
With the Ecko website stirring up debate on Bonds and the 756 ball, apparently the owner of 755 is copying Ecko with a website of their own, called End The Debate, which offers a vote to, what else, "end the debate" and voters can vote just Hall of Fame or destroy it.
Rebuilding the Giants: hindsight
OK, I've been in a debate with Boof about the Giants and he brought up something I had to see if others agreed with him or not, which was when the Giants should have rebuilt.
His statement, quote, was "Most everyone seems to recognize that the rebuilding of this team is going to take a long time. It's a process that should've started in earnest after the 2002 season."
Sabean signed to two year extension with option
Read it and celebrate/weep (depends on your inclination): http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20070713&content_id=2084034&vke y=pr_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf
Oddly enough, the bottom part looks like what I wrote in some of the comment threads. :^)
Linden has been waived to AAA
And this time, nobody claimed him.
I'm Rooting for Frandsen, But Really...
I've been staying away but I couldn't hold my tongue on this one. I like Frandsen, I'm rooting for him with all my heart, but he hasn't shown enough in the minors yet.
Hot Stove Show, KNBR 12/7
Notes from the show, available off sfgiants.com if you want a listen.
Biggest news: Giants seriously pursuing Zito
Giants Hot Stove League Nov 30 on KNBR: Damon Bruce Needs to Read Here Daily
Broadcast available for now on http://www.sfgiants.com under their Sights and Sounds section in middle of the webpage (its a javascript link so I'm not sure how to link to it from here) Damon Bruce and Dave Fleming host.
Have to get this off my chest first: among Damon Bruce's first statements is that he wonders why the Giants haven't made a bigger effort to sign some players now, like Feliz and Hillenbrand, in order to secure some spots.
@*#!#$!#%! Don't be the host of the Giants Hot Stove League show and say something stupid like this!!!!! If he all he did was read the SF Chronicle and SJ Mercury daily, or better yet, read HERE, he would know why: Feliz's agent was asking for the world and after bragging about the interest in his client, came back, hat in hand, hoping the Giants would sign Feliz for one year at $4M. Besides which, if he read any of the threads here, he would know how bad Feliz (and Hillenbrand) really is.
Dave Fleming was great, he clearly disagreed, but did it so diplomatically, simply stating that Feliz is not that good a hitter and the Giants are making a good faith effort to improve the team, not settle. Plus I think he later noted that Hillenbrand clearly did not play well here and the team was disappointed, so while they had interest to sign him originally, that has waned.
Stats Show More IP Increased, The Better
Someone noted before here, don't recall exactly who, in one of Steve's diaries that one should not increase a pitcher's load of IP more than 20-30 IP per year or risk blowing out his arm and/or harming his development. Someone on The Hardball Times take aim at that "rule of thumb" with some data - apparently Tom Verducci is also a believer of this rule and therefore disses Matt Cain: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/the-year-after-effect/

Didn't mean to kid Irwin into doing them. :^)
Heard on KNBR: SD choses Bud Black as next manager
Heard this on the news on KNBR, like an hour ago, that the Padres have selected Bud Black as their next manager, as reported by the SD Union, their local newspaper.

Latest on Barry
Interesting article on Barry in Merc today:
Ugh. Matthews. Ewww.
The Merc today announced Matthews as a top priority for the Giants and could be a Bochy influenced interest since he has played twice for Bochy, once as rookie and once just before joining the Rangers and finally doing well.
As many here suspected, he would play CF and push Winn to a corner OF spot (RF if Bonds return, LF perhaps if not and Linden in RF).
Bochy new manager?
I was listening to KNBR at 4:10PM and some caller said that, according to his source, the Giants will sign Bruce Bochy to a 3 year, $6M contract.
The New Colletti?
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/10/25/sports/s093837D77.DTL
"Assistant general manager Tony Siegle was let go by the Washington Nationals on Wednesday after five seasons with the franchise.Siegle, who specialized in contract negotiations and rules interpretation, joined the team when it was the Montreal Expos, under current general manager Jim Bowden's predecessor, Omar Minaya.
Siegle has been in baseball since the 1960s, working under more than 20 general managers with eight clubs."
Jerome Williams is an A's prospect now?!?
When did that happen? I was reading about the A's in the Merc on Thursday and they listed everyone and the kitchen sink as a possible #5 starter when I spied Williams' name.
Scenario Thinking: Dontrelle for Lowry plus others
Sudden obsession: How to get Dontrelle.
Giants Have $45M to spend
According to article in SJ Merc - http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/baseball/mlb/san_francisco_giants/15707536.htm - by Andy Baggarly, whom I enjoy reading, the Giants have $45M to spend since their budget is $85M and they have $40.3M in contracts committed currently.
Giants Rooting Pecking Order
A Giants fan's guide to rooting in the 2006 playoffs, taking into account past history and past trespasses on the part of the playoff participant against us Giants.
Sabean scheduled to be on KNBR around 5:35 PM
Just FYI for those in the area or who can access the Internet feed at http://www.knbr.com/.
Dodger Prospects Are Loons
Thanks to Steve S. for his Great 2006 minor lines
I just wanted to put out an open thank you to Steve for his great and thorough job in reporting the Giants 2006 minor league system to all of us McCovens this season.
Giants spending to be .500 team according to formula
I came across an interesting discussion today about how many expected wins a team is spending to get: http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/competing_on_payroll/
The assumption is "that each extra $2M spent adds 1 expected win to your team."
Warming the Cockles the Hearts of Sanchez Supporters Everywhere plus Get Schmidt
The SF Chronicle reported today:
Sanchez said the Giants have asked him to get work as a starter in winter ball in Puerto Rico.
And I still think re-signing Schmidt is the right move.
Kruk Agrees with DrB!
On his KNBR morning show gig, Kruk was discussing Cain - again noting how Cain can get out hitters even when he only has his fastball - and noted how much Cain reminds him of Tom Seaver, which DrB has been saying here for a long while now.
