Beckham thought it was a put-on. "Is this guy taking the piss?" he asked. But the waiter was serious. When the Galaxy's Portuguese defender Abel Xavier couldn't produce an I.D., his wineglass disappeared too. "What is this?" the 34-year-old Xavier thundered. "I have a kid who can drink." The other players laughed hysterically, partly because the waiter hadn't recognized the world's most famous athlete and partly because Beckham and Xavier were so used to being mobbed in Europe that they didn't bother carrying identification. Welcome to soccer in the U.S., guys.

When the broadcast talent went silent, all you heard was the ball being kicked, players calling for a pass, and fans singing songs and yelling encouragement, or insults, or whatever. It was beautiful, and it gave us an uncluttered sight of the American soccer dream: a stadium full of passionate, knowledgeable fans, and a field full of skilled, exciting players.

So rather than focusing on ESPN2's delay in sending us that image, let's instead focus on what we saw and heard in that game.

For a start you cannot be offside from a throw-in, so the attackers can crowd the six-yard box. But, also, because a free-kick starts with the ball on the ground it means it has to have a natural arc in order to get up and over the first defender.

From a throw-in the ball starts from six foot and it is the angle and trajectory of Delap's darts that make them so potent. It is unbelievable how he does it - his throws come in flat like an arrow.
