Do You Make Those Moves?

In the East we have had Miami making a huge trade to bring in Shaq. It took them from a young team with potential to game 7 of the ECF and then to the title the following year. We all know how quickly they fell apart after that.

Miami gets two great years and a title and gives up Lamar Odom, Caron Butler (turned in Pau Gasol) and Brian Grant (salary relief). All keys to the Lakers current success.

Boston mortgages their future for the present and goes to the finals the first year. Will they be like Miami and be dominant for two years and then quickly slide into obscurity? I would have to say "yes".

Will others follow this trend? Is it better to be just good and competitive for 5-6 years or be great and contending for titles for 2 years?

I have to disqualify Dallas and Phoenix as they were not quite the blockbuster deals as the Boston and Miami trades. Those were more" let's see if this works" trades where the Boston and Miami trades immediately turned those teams into contenders.

Will we see more of these rebuilding teams turn into an overnight success with similar moves in the near future?

Fortune favors the bold. Do you make those moves?

I love it. Everywhere I turn opposing players, coaches and analysts are mentioning Portland.

After Denver was eliminated from the playoffs a somber George Karl in his post game press conference said that it would be even harder next year to make the playoffs specifically mentioning that the Blazers "are not going to get worse".

Jerry Stackhouse was on NBA Fastbreak tonight and when asked if he thought Boston or LA would win more games next year he chose Boston saying that the West was going to be even tougher next year and that Portland was going to make the playoffs and take wins away from others in the West. Moments later Greg Anthony also mentioned Portland when saying that he felt Dallas would not make the playoffs next year.

Chuck and Kenny frequently mention Portland as being a force next year.

It seems that not only members of the media but even opposing players fully expect us to be a force next year. Assuming they are right (they are) what team or teams that made the playoffs this year will not make the playoffs next year? I would have agreed with Dallas but history shows that Rick Carlisle works magic his first year after taking over a new team and I expect them to be in the playoffs.

Wish List

This site is obviously full of trade proposals and assorted wish lists. The two biggest positions of discussion are point guard and small forward. I would like to throw a couple names into the list to stir up discussion. If someone has already mentioned these names I apologize in advance.

Small Forward- I would LOVE to have Tayshaun Prince. I think he would be the perfect compliment to our big 3. He plays lock down "D", has tons of playoff experience and doesn't demand the ball. He presents major matchup problems for the opposition on both ends. If he could be had what would you give up to get him?

Point Guard- Andre Miller. He is a free agent and has expressed interest in returning to the West Coast. He would provide a steady veteran hand and get our big guns the ball where they need it. He can give us a few quality years until one of our young guards is ready to step up and be "the man".

Let's here they why's, why not's and everything in between.
