Anonymous poll - Should Gordon Beckham be on our opening roster as starting second basemen?

The purpose of this poll is to validate whether a debate truly exists in the SSS community about whether Gordon Beckham should and will be heading up North come April. If you haven't voiced your opinion on this topic, especially if you think he should start, participate in this anonymous poll and avoid the wrath of Larry.

The question is fairly specific based on a number of assumptions:

1. Alexei will play shortstop, non withstanding defensive concerns.

2. KW stated his preference that Beckham starts, i.e. gets regular at-bats, either at the minor or major league level.

Personally, I don't think Beckham should be on the opening roster. He's only played 14 games in the AFL, and needs to work on his craft more. Perhaps later as a September call-up assuming that Getz / Nix are playing below replacement level. There are very very few players who have succeeded at the Major League level with the number of minor league at-bats that Beckham has thus far accrued.

Aside from drinking several bottles of champagne last week after my defense, I hit Twisted Village and bought a few records:

Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-6 - excellent nigerian pop comp with hints of psych, blues, garage. I'm really digging this!

Faust - Faust - Now I have the first two records on vinyl. More krautrock please.

Godspeed You Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞ - I think I'm one of the few that likes this album better than Lift Your Skinny Fists...

Tropicália: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound - I was looking for some old Caetano Veloso records and found this. The usual suspects including Tom Ze are on this.

What have you been listening too lately?

OT: Movies of the year, that means 2008 bitches

It's a small city, but I think Boston is fantastic for seeing film of all kinds; there are several different venues that show films of the old/restored/art/foreign variety. I also miss the movie seeing experience in Chitown, particularly FACETS, Old Music Box, and the I.C.E in Lawndale (where I'd see the action flicks with bonus entertainment from the viewing audience). Anyway, here are several films I found most enjoyable, and that would make Larry's censored list for being too communist (in no particular order):

Dark knight

Milk

Slumdog millionaire

Chop shop

JCVD (rocks!!)

A portion of Berlin Alexanderplatz (recently restored version of Fassbinder's 16 hour epic)

Encounters at the end of the world (Herzog documentary)

The other side of the mirror (Dylan/Newport era documentary by Murray Lerner)

What were your favorites? Post away, but if I don't think you're list is worthy enough, I may have to flag you and make this an invite-only thread :p

It's been a while...so yeah. Let's move this one up.

Because the previous FanPost wasn't good enough for colin, I thought this would better satisfy his nerdy tendencies that we're all fond and sick of at the same time. Over the last few years, I find myself increasingly overwhelmed and consequently less aware of contemporary music, so if you find my list dated, to not include anything relevant to Sox offseason activities, and not be worthy for Pitchforkmedia or Now That's What I Call Music (i.e., Kenwo the kickboxer), feel free to flag.

In no particular order:

Velvet Underground - VU, a previous collection of unreleased recordings

TVOTR - Dear Science

Brian Eno - Music for Airports

Lo Cor De Plana - Tant Deman

Sea and Cake - Car Alarm

Fred Anderson Quartet - Vol 1

Stereolab - Chemical Chords

Fela Kuti - Original Sufferhead

Amon Duul II - Phallus De

Lucifer Rising sountrack for Kenneth Anger film

Goblin - Profondo Rosso sountrack for Dario Argento film

Spacemen 3 - Perfect Prescription

The first snow just hit Boston, and I'm off to work on a friggin' Sunday to knock out a paper.

OSFIB

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick ranks his favorite Ozzie blow-ups. I agree with #1 and #2, but #5 shouldn't receive a rank to someone who can read between the fucking lines. Actually, this article as a whole provides nothing new.

Why post then? I was curious, what's your favorite Ozzie quote or moment? It doesn't have to be a blow-up ya'll.

For me - and I can't find the article that has the actual quote - but it was in 2005, and Ozzie described his use of Jenks analogous to riding a thoroughbred, that sometimes you gotta yank Bobby a bit to get him to behave. Fucking old school...

Another wire thread yo - season 1

I moved to another apartment this month and I no longer have HBO on demand. It was through HBO on-demand that I met and loved "The Wire". I didn't grow to love The Wire, it was love at first site baby. I recently burned the DVDs to maintain my 'healthy' addiction.

Some folks are still working on subsequent seasons, so I have a couple questions regarding Season 1:

1. Favorite character?

I'm going with Daniels for Season 1. He's one serious motherfucker not to be messed with even though McNulty gets under his skin more than once. He does an admiral job supporting his subordinates who are doing good police work and satisfying his bumbling superiors at the same time.

2. Everybody (not just white people) likes The Wire, but was there anything about Season 1 that you disliked?

I'm just wondering, how does Omar manage not to get knocked off?? Especially when he's having chit-chats with Prop Joe at his office.

3. Do you think the underlying criticism of the drug war
does not go far enough in Season 1?

Let ya'll tackle that one. David Simon's approach to producing this show was analogous to writing a novel, so perhaps Season 1 was just the first chapter that introduces the players, the concepts...That said, there was no mention of draconian/racist drug laws in this season.
