Per orders of the Cleveland Indians, Clippers pitcher Carlos Carrasco was scratched today from his 11:35 a.m. start against the Syracuse Chiefs.

The move could mean a call-up for Carrasco, who is 2-1 with a 3.49 earned run average, or it could be precautionary. Stay tuned. Reliever Mike Gosling is starting for Carrasco. He probably has three innings in his gas tank.

Via Castrovince: Luis Valbuena, owner of a .179 average, is not only a regular, but now (or today, at least) he's batting leadoff. Wedge wanted to give Jamey Carroll a day off, and he didn't want to move the struggling Ben Francisco (5-for-42) back to leadoff. So Valbuena gets the job for the night. Wedge said he liked seeing Valbuena work two walks off Dave Bush last night, and he's talked the past week about how his at-bats are better than the stats indicate. "I don't look at the numbers," Wedge said. "This is a good opportunity to get him up there. It could be a good shot in the arm for him."

Jeremy Sowers was supposed to start the first game. Columbus manager Torey Lovullo just told Clippers radio voice Scott Leo that the Indians may want Sowers to join Cleveland in Boston as soon as Wednesday. No word on exactly why, but Sowers isn't pitching. Zach Jackson is starting game one - weather permitting.

BA's Jim Callis takes a question from Dennis Nosco criticizing the Indians' draft, and says: "... there was some sound rationale behind the way the Indians played the draft."

The Indians have signed fifth-round Draft pick Zach Putnam, a right-hander from the University of Michigan.

Putnam, 21, went 9-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 12 starts during his junior year with the Wolverines. He struck out 78 and walked 23 in 76 2/3 innings and was named the District V (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin) Player of the Year for the second straight year and the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.

Friday is the deadline for signing Draft picks, and second-round pick Curtis Haley, a right-hander from Central Heights (Texas) High School, is unsigned at the moment. But the Indians are expected to come to terms with him by the deadline.

From L.A. Times columnist T.J. Simers... You gotta feel at least a wee bit bad for Blake. It's entertaining reading, but Simers is a bit hypocritical for suggesting Blake wouldn't fit in the OF since earlier in the column he criticizes some of LA's outfielders.

Quoting Simers:

SO THE fans in Cleveland didn't take a liking to Casey Blake over the years. Wonder how they'd feel watching Jones play every day. Or Berroa.

"They were pretty tough on me," Blake said. "I think they were looking for a 40-home-run guy."

So are the Dodgers and their fans.

"Oh," Blake said.

Blake, who is free to go elsewhere after the season, said the Dodgers and their fans will probably like the versatility he offers in the next two months playing first base and the outfield as well as third base.

"Doubt it," I said. "They've got James Loney parked at first and four guys already vying for three outfield spots."

"Oh," Blake said.

Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has a good story up about unannounced, over-slot draft signings waiting for MLB approval. Within this story is a note that the Indians will sign RHP Trey Haley (second-round pick) for about $1 million, and also go over slot to sign RHP Zach Putnam (5) and OF Tim Fedroff (7). Good news if true, but none of those signings will be as significant as some over-slot signings by Red Sox and Rangers -- who are close to signing some top prospects who plunged in the draft due to bonus demands. Goldstein reports a rumor that Red Sox close to signing their 20th round pick (Alex Meyer) for $2 million... wow.

The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have traded Bisons INF Ryan Mulhern and RHP Dan Reichert to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Sad to see Mulhern go even though he had no future here. Hope the best for him.
