Minor League Chat: The IFAs are coming

The international signing period is upon us, and the Mariners have as expected signed Brayan Hernandez for $1.8m. He's Venezuelan and his name's Hernandez, so I expect he'll be good. No, I've never...

Minor League Chat, All-star edition

Things are a little slow in the minors right now, with Pulaski and Peoria not yet in action and the AA, A+ and A leagues on their all-star breaks. Ketel Marte represented Jackson in the Southern...

Lone Star Ball is getting a little obsessed with Kyle Seager

5

400+ comments in their latest game thread, and 25% of them are discussing what anti-Seager slogan to put on a t-shirt. My favourite: "Kyle Seager only pretends to like geoducks"

Catcher framing so far

+

If you have a Baseball Prospectus subscription, this article has lots of love for Mike Zunino. If you don't, I'll just say that, according to BPro's metric, he leads all catchers in runs saved by framing this season at 5.1 runs. Last is Jaso, at -4.9 runs.

Who's doing what in the minors?

To distract myself from thinking about the major league team (because really, who wants to do that right now?) I thought I'd have a look around the minor league system for interesting performances....

BPro measures selective aggression

+

Ben Lindbergh at Baseball Prospectus looked at the best and worst Z-Swing to O-Swing ratios of last season. The top 10: 1) Dan Uggla 2) Chris Iannetta 3) Andrew McCutchen 4) Matt Joyce 5) Michael Saunders 6) Justin Ruggiano 7) Dexter Fowler 8) David Wright 9) Logan Morrison 10) Yunel Escobar Good news: two Mariners in the top 10. Bad news: in a list where Dan Uggla is number 1.

BPro top 101 prospects

+

Baseball Prospectus's top 101 prospects lists is out (no subscription required), including three Mariners: 8. Taijuan Walker 65. D.J. Peterson 68. James Paxton

Roy Halladay to retire

+

No real Mariner relevance beyond my vague idea of signing him as a low-cost, high-ceiling flyer, but sad to see him out of the game.

Fangraphs top 10 Mariners prospects

1

1. Walker 2. Peterson 3. Paxton 4. Sanchez 5. Hultzen 6. Pike 7. Diaz 8. Gohara 9. Taylor 10. Wilson

BPro's Top 10 Mariners Prospects

+

Subscription required to read the whole thing, but here's the top 10: Taijuan Walker, RHP D.J. Peterson, 1B James Paxton, LHP Victor Sanchez, RHP Edwin Diaz, RHP Luiz Gohara, LHP Chris Taylor, SS Tyler Pike, LHP Tyler Marlette, C Gabriel Guerrero, OF

Mariners claim Travis Witherspoon off waivers from the Angels

5

Apparently a Travis Witherspoon is a 24-year-old toolsy outfielder who can't hit AA pitching (.214/.299/.342 this year).

Arbitration estimates for 2014 Mariners

3

Matt Schwartz's model predicts $2.8m for Smoak, $2m for Saunders and $900k for Furbush (who's likely a Super-2). That's more than I expected for Smoak.

The end of the Hot Stone League

+

Larry Stone is becoming a general sports columnist rather than being a full-time baseball columnist. :-(

Trading performance of current GMs

9

(I don't think you need to be a subscriber to see that article.) Tim Malone looks at how much WARP (= WAR) GM's have gained and lost through trade, and at what cost. Figure 1 is the most interesting, showing net WARP per year and net WARP/$ per year. The bad news is Zduriencik's bad on both; the 'good' news is that you'd have to expand both axes by a factor of four to find Bavasi in the bottom-left corner, so comparatively Z looks great.

David Pauley signs with the Sugarland Skeeters

1

Their past players include a certain Scott Kazmir, so in a few years expect Pauley to be back in the majors and two-hitting the Mariners.

International Signings Day

Signing of international free agents starts today. I know next to nothing of the potential signees, but there are a few useful articles scattered around the Web so I thought I'd pull some of them...

Divish on Brendan Ryan's best defensive play

And it's not the one you're thinking of. Or that one. No, not that one either.

M's Minor League Performances, 7th April

The fact that there's a date in the title is not an implicit promise to do this regularly. I can barely manage breathing regularly. Instead, this is just because I noticed a few interesting...

Dewan Spring Training rule doesn't look good

+

(Link is subscriber-only, I think) BP looks at Dewan's rule about Spring Training SLG percentage jumps and doesn't find any predictive value. Shame, really, as Smoak, Guti, Montero, Peguero and Morse all qualified.

Royals no longer only team to sign Yuni twice

1

The Brewers have apparently signed Yuni to a major-league deal despite the fact that he's played for them before.

Sickels' top 150 prospects

2

Sickels really like the Mariners system: five prospects in the top 50, another three in the top 100 and Romero at 135.

BP's Top 101 Prospects

+

9. Taijuan Walker 33. Mike Zunino 50. Danny Hultzen 72 Nick Franklin 92 James Paxton

Mike Wilson signs with the Mets

5

Which still won't stop people asking Jay why Wilson's not on the team.

Prospect ranking season continues

6

Marc Hulet posts his Mariners top 15 at Fangraphs. Julio Morban still not getting any love.

Chris Seddon and his hair are off to Korea

+

At least, I assume he's taking his hair with him. Signed with the SK Wyverns according to Dan Kurtz.

David Laurilia interviews Danny Hultzen

+

Nice Fangraphs interview with Hultzen, covering his repertoire and approach, and what he learned from his first pro season.

Johermyn Chavez has signed with the Cubs

+

Royals DFA Jeremy Jeffress

3

He's an ex-Brewers relief prospect with a mid-90s fastball and a history of recreational drug use. All he needs now is a bartending stint and his training as our next closer will be complete.

Scouting reports on Mavericks

+

This is from back in August: an AL scout gives his opinions on various High Desert prospects: Miller, Jones, Morban, Marder, Hicks, Proscia, Smith, Elias, McGee.
