Fear The Fin Roller Hockey Pick-up in San Jose

There is an outdoor roller rink at Roosevelt Park in San Jose. It has a synthetic sport-court type surface and full boards.

Check out the links:

Myspace Page

The rink will be open for pick-up Monday-Friday beginning Monday June 14th.

Pick-up is open to all ages for $5.

Required Equipment:

  • Skates
  • Shin Guards
  • Helmet (with cage if under 18)
  • Gloves
  • Stick
  • Girdle and Elbow Pads recommended
  • They also have some gear for rent (free of charge) but I wouldn't count on it

The game is always fun, and is open to players of all skill levels.

Roosevelt has had some financial issues, and it was a big question whether it would be open at all this summer. It has been passed down from the city that the future of the rink is based largely on attendance.

So if you like playing roller hockey and can make it this summer, get out there! You won't be disappointed.

*I am in no way affiliated with Roosevelt Roller Hockey or The City of San Jose. I just love playing there and want it to survive. All information provided is obtained from the embedded links and from playing there in the past.

Fear The Fin Superstitions - Let 'em Out

"Superstition is foolish, childish, primitive and irrational -- but how much does it cost you to knock on wood?" - Judith Viorst

Superstition is a beast familiar to many sports fans, especially hockey fans. It is only a human. We wager our hopes and dreams (and our summer happiness) on occasionally random bounces of an oddly-shaped projectile. It is only natural that we would convince ourselves that we have some control. The tools we use to establish that illusion of influence are our superstitions - whether they be innocent, interesting, annoying, or downright insane.

Now, lumped on top of my somewhat standard set of regular season superstitions and hockey related idiosyncrasies, I carry around an astounding burden of spring-scented senility. It's late April, It's the Playoffs, and I'm driving myself absolutely insane.

So at the beginning of the olympics I printed out the tv schedule for hockey from nbc.com. That was 2/16. This is the program description on the printout for tomorrow's game. They knew 8 days before everyone else?

So the newest firefox (3.6) has these handy dandy personas. They are essentially images that hang out at the top of your browser all the time. It's pretty sweet.

After upgrading a few days ago, I searched through all the available personas, and to my dismay - no good Sharks personas.

I figured a lot of the people here are quite photo-capable and may want to create some.

So give it a shot if you would like.

Seems pretty silly to me, but man would it be cool.

I'm a big fan of Puck Daddy, but for obvious reasons, this one got to me. I wish I had time to thoroughly debunk his point, but i have to work, so I'll leave a few quick bullet points here and let you guys do the rest.

-He list 8 statistical measures in Point 1, and the Sharks lead in 6 of them. Granted, the split is not large between the two teams in any of the categories, but c'mon; the conclusion does not match the evidence.
-He talks about the Blackhawks being more versatile than the Sharks, but only points out one statistic about one Blackhawks player. I'd be willing to bet that there are at least a few Sharks who have seen different lines more than Mr. Sharp.

Go forth and discuss.

Oh and PD frequently links FTF (as he does in this article), so play nice. I'm sure he is someone many of us respect and vice versa.

Thornton, Heatley, Boyle, and Marleau all made the team.

Great day for them and The Sharks.

Fear The Fin Non-HD Games In HD

I have no idea who to talk to about this, so I figured this is a great place to get the ball rolling.

I am a Sharks fan, and as such I watch all the games. I am in the habit of watching all the games on the HD channel because I figured the pregame would be in HD even if the game is not. I am a Comcast subscriber.

Here's where it gets weird:

Every single game (with the exception of the game @Nashville that wasn't broadcast anywhere) has been broadcast in HD. I don't mean a standard signal on the HD channel, or a standard signal stretched to fit the HD size, I mean glorious, full-blown HD.

As many of you know, several of the games were slated on the schedule as non-HD, so this is bizarre.

Even bizarre-er, a few times, while watching a gorgeous HD telecast, Randy/Drew have said something to the effect of, "Next game will come to you in Glorious HD," not mentioning that this one is HD. They never say that the next game will be in HD when the schedule says it won't be, and they have only once mentioned on gameday that the game is being broadcast in HD contrary to previous scheduling. And they made a big deal about that the one time they brought it up.

By my count I have watched 8 games in HD that were slated to be non-HD. 7 of which have run with no mention of the broadcast format.

I'm interested to see if any of you have noticed this or anything related.

*On a related note, I have noticed that the compression used is different on the road than at home. During road games, the faster moving players have a slight trail. The reason this happens becomes pretty clear if you familiarize yourself with the type of video compression used for HD broadcasts. Essentially, the video is compressed by only saving the differences between adjacent frames, rather than the frames themselves. The extent to which the file is compressed is dependent upon the sensitivity to changes frame to frame. If they want to transmit less data while on the road, they can turn down the sensitivity and you see trails behind the players.

I'm sure the majority of us saw this the first time, but I thought it was extra cool to watch now that we have scotty on our side.

Fear The Fin Watching Online

As I'm sure everyone is, I am very unhappy about the recent drop off in availability of streaming hockey.

So now we have this thread to post possible links before every game. Hopefully this doesn't end up biting us in the derriere.

So for tonight's game, I've found possible a possible link here.

No way to tell if it works until game time, but after sifting through an unbelievable number of hits on google, this seemed like the most venerable option.

Please post any links you find (if you're comfortable doing so).
