In defense of the W's Front Office

Listen, sounds like the great thing to do these days is to trash the warriors front office and call them inept. All I have seen them do in the past month is:

#1: Ditch a bad contract in J Craw, who as a great guy was a bad fit for the team and didnt need to be here. To add, everyone KNEW he wanted to move, and we still got a young (totally unproven with big reality he wont do very much) in Law that we are only asking to be a THIRD STRING GUY

#2: Draft the best player available that has the make up to be a top player in the league according to many out there in Curry.

#3: To privately state that they are not going to trade a stud in Curry along with a topped out Bendris and a poo poo platter of unproven talent in Belli and Wright to get a guy who we are not 100% would resign after the year. Wait.. and injury proven guy who would become the highest paid player on our team is balking at the chance to come to the Bay after serious career threatening surgery less than 2 years ago? He would play on a team with equal to lower talent than on the Suns, and is a premadonna that can score but has no history of defense or rebounding, two areas that we have lacked in the past. Lets be honest.. he's a great catch and an asset UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES, but not to sell the farm over.

I am going to have to go against the popular masses ( see: Tim K most of the time, as he DID applaud us for ACTUALLY MAKING SOME KIND OF MOVE which I agree with, and other posters on this site who are ready to pack it in for the team) and say that Riley has impressed me so far without actually doing much with the conversations and rumors he has at least sparked and the dedication to some kind of plan that we only try to guess at and subsquently tear apart over here at GSOM thinking that we could do a better job.

How about we all put the "We Believe" videos away, right under our J-Rich and B Davis jerseys and calm down a bit. Lets see what the finished product looks like in the next few months, stop speculating and starting "Movement" emails and chains on here that only serve to piss us all off when nothing happens, and wait for some ACTUAL news to happen on June 8th, or even October when the off-season is actually over. Trust me... relaxing a bit is MUCH easier than griping on a daily basis about how much DUBS BRAZZZZ sucks and Nelson/Cohan/whatever are losers.

Lets add a bit more optimism and positivity around here and stop making rash judgments. And... I'm spent

Trade Down?

Was looking at some very early mock drafts today, and as much as I hate to read paragraph after paragraph about possible offseason moves with so many things still yet to happen (draft order, opt outs, etc), I wanted to post it right here on the board right now that, with the odds of us moving up being so bad, and such a horrible drop off in talent after the top 2 picks, this could be a great chance to use a bad contract (see: C.Magg or J.Craw) to actually move DOWN in the draft.

If the team stamps their intent by broadcasting to the world that they need a new pg, couldnt they use logjam they have at the wing to actually move down (see: Detroit, Portland) to a team that is looking for someone in the Guard department or a bigger body down low. I see:

Maggs, Wright and the 7 going to Detriot for

#14 and Prince

Warriors take a Flynn or Patty Mills to run the point

Its not the ONLY move (still creates a jam at shooting with a guy like Jackson still looking for his final position), but it starts to help make things make sense. AGAIN, if Crawford is still around, this still makes a mess, but its a good start. I just dont think the talent diffference is THAT much where Jennings or Lawson over Flynn or Mills makes THAT much sense, especially if there is about a 5% chance any guy outside of Rubio would actually start come next October anyway.

Anyway, thanks for listening. Stay classy GSOM

Interesting Baron Article

Check out this article on Baron Davis from Bill Simmons, "The Sports Guy" on ESPN.com. Im a fan of Bill's work, who is speaking as a season ticket holder of the Clippers who has been complaining about Baron since the signing. Interesting read, pretty much backs up, quotes and all, everything we thought and said about Baron Davis from the start. Enjoy

Warriors Get:

Crawford

Clippers get:

Randolph

Collins

Note: Artilce says Randolph, Collins and Crawford get split between Clippers and Warriors, but how else would it be split?

Knicks get:

Harrington

Mobley

Tim Thomas

The rest is just filler, with the Clippers getting a piece that the Knicks are trying to rid of anyway. At least we are not still taking about Malik Rose...

Rumor: Warriors offer Max Deal to Arenas

Just as the Warriors prepare for a cornerstone to move on from the franchise, ESPN.com reports this morning that "According to a source close to Arenas" the W's made a max offer to Gilbert for 5 years @ $101 Million total (about $20M/year). Gilbert already made the "verbal commitment" (whatever that means) that if the Wizards re-signed Jamison, he would come back. Even if he DIDNT sign with the Warriors, who can't feel a bit proud that we are actually starting to TRY to make things happen? My eyes are glued to the ticker, cant wait to see what is going to happen next

Doing my Best to Understand it All...

As a long time Warriors fan, I, along with a huge number of my companions, were shocked a few years ago when we were able to pick up a guy like Baron Davis. What? Superstars actually coming to the Bay? Aren't we suppose to be grooming talent for everyone else?

I have enjoyed the Baron Davis era with a lot of promise and hope. I saw him destroy a coach and look fragile on the floor at times, but in the end he always added excitement to the team. He brought his game, brought the swagger to the Bay, was able to make me happy to be a Warriors Fan.

After all this though, I have been fully aware that Baron is in an elite group in the League: a new age star that wants his fame AND his money. He has been a huge asset to the team don't get me wrong, but the guy wants his and thats all there is to it. Lets look at the scenerio: signs a long term deal with the Hornets, gets shipped out of town, rejuvinates the career at the same time as he is loving life outside of basketball with his directing career and his fame. He comes to a crossroads: realizing his career is getting shorter and shorter by the year, he does what he can to prove to the media and the fans that he is "not fragile", even though he visibly slowed down, tired out, and almost shut down as the year drew to a close last year. He was done; the guy shouldnt have played 82 games, but as his coach knew it was the only way to get to the playoffs, Baron realized that a possible playoff run and the illusion that he can keep up with the league would mean big payoff in the end.

The guy is sitting with a contract on his lap for one guaranteed year, and after trojan horsing his way through the end of last year, I don't blame him AT ALL for doing everything he can to get a long term deal in place. Guaranteed money? FANTASTIC!! Cruise control here we come, because lets face it, he is 1 or 2 years away from a 25 minute per game talent, in the shell of any superstar who stays around the league a few too many years. Yes he is only 29, but that body of his has been through the ringer, and the guy wants long-term gold.

The ironic thing about this is if he signs a 5 year deal with the W's and gets run down and hurt this year, aren't we worse off than if he left WITH compensation. Even if we get nothing for him, we have to cut ties and realize that this is the business of the game. I don't think the right thing to do would be to sign him long term; having him for one more year while making the run was like the Niners piecing together a team to be around Steve Young for one last run with Rice while they destroyed their cap for year and years. Teams have to be smart... the Baron Davis Era was fantastic lets all agree, and if we can get it for one last Encore, even better. But if it has to end now? Lets start the Eulogy, and realize that the team must go on. Hey Baron, when that knee of yours finally does go out, can you do it at Oracle so I can be reminded of the player you really are and feel better about myself?
