international arrest warrant for Floyd Landis?

17

I read this in Le Monde today, it's about Landis and his coach, Arnie Baker. I haven't been following the story closely but apparently they failed to appear in a French court on 5 May, regarding the hacking of the infamous French lab's computer system (the French want more info on whether Baker and Landis were behind the hacking). Anyways most of the story is about the back-and-forth of emails between Baker and the French authorities, but the money quote is at the end of the story, from Pierre Bordry, head of the AFLD: "If it's the only way to get Landis and Baker to explain themselves, I won't hesitate to ask the judge to resort to an international arrest warrant."

NY Times article on Coppi/Bartali

I haven't read it yet, but thought people would be interested, cool pictures too ;)

new Barry article, stunning

12

It is absolutely ridiculous how beautiful this writing is. Check out especially the paragraphs on the Russians (wonder if he'd include Sivtsov in there?) and Moser. If there's anyone else writing right now who's even close to this guy's ability to get at all the little details that make cycling so beautiful, I want to know.

I guess you're probably already in the mood (for the Giro that is), but these are some HOT photos!

Astana to receive official warning from UCI...

2

...for not paying certain of their riders. Story highlights: McQuaid's about to send them a letter; they could lose their ProTour license if they don't act immediately; no comment from Astana spokesman Philippe Maertens.

UCI joining CONI on Valverde

They'll be present at the CONI hearing...and seek, of course, to expand any penalty beyond the borders of Italy.

Sorry for the glut of fanshots but this looks like a phenomenal race, the upper midwest's answer to the Rouge Roubaix I guess. Any of the "local" (MN/WI/IA) pdcers happen to do this race? I just might have to aim for next year, if I can get hold of a cross bike ;)

Theo Bos wins Tour of North Holland

According to L'équipe it's his first win as a pro. Anyone have any news about him...any official investigation re: Tour of Turkey?

Joe Parkin interview from Cycling News

+

Very interesting interview with former pro Joe Parkin, some may have read his "A dog in a hat" from last year (if not I highly recommend it). He's a great interviewee, very candid, opinionated without seeming brash or arrogant. His takes on doping are really interesting too.

"jersey rojo"?

I know the Vuelta's a long way away, and I may have just missed this, forgive me if this is the case. However, I just read that the leader's jersey this year will be red and not gold? The link is to the wikipedia entry for the Vuelta in Spanish; check the end of the first paragraph in the "maillots de líder" section. I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, and I couldn't find confirmation of this anywhere else...anyone else have more info?

Links from L'équipe: Armstrong, Chavanel, Contador...

+

Some very short articles from today's Équipe. The one I linked to is about Armstrong - strange story about his "behaviour" during a recent drug test administered by the Agence française de lutte contre le dopage, which apparently led the doctor who took the samples to submit a report to the UCI and Agence mondiale antidopage on 30 March. The comments section is hilarious - a bunch of people writing in to ask "WHAT BEHAVIOUR," taking the paper to task for printing such imprecise information (it never actually gives any info regarding the behaviour). Some other stories of interest (in "Chrono" section in middle of page) include one stating that Chavanel will take part in P-R (Lefévère: "I confirm that he'll be there, and not just as a bit player"), and another stating that Contador won't take place in the Ardennes classics.

"The Vuelta will arrive in Liège on 1 September"

1

This will make Liège the only city to have played host to all 3 grand tours. I feel bad for the cyclists though - that San Sebastián to Liège stage is going to be a killer! ;)

How hot is this uniform?! This is the kind of uniforms I've been waiting for NBA teams to have for years. This is so f***ing cool! Why can't the Wolves, not to mention all the other teams, have hot uniforms like this? Why, you ask, do they have these uniforms? (See comments.)

NY Times article on Svein Tuft, very good stuff

Pretty cool that a guy like this can succeed in cycling. I hope he has a great season, it would be great to see him have a good finish at P-R and/or win a stage at the Tour.

Starbury

OK this doesn't really fit anywhere but it's kind of funny. Today I was in a used clothing store and saw a pair of Starburys for sale. First time I'd ever seen them! I'm in the market for a new pair of shoes so I thought I'd give them a try. Then I noticed the price tag - $18.50...i.e. more than they would be new! I tried saying something to the ladies at the counter...they just kind of grinned at me, with that "please go away annoying man" kind of look, yeah you know the one. So I just paid for my shirt and left.

"Love must earn his minutes"

Nice article from Zgoda on Love's minutes. I don't think I totally agree with McHale but he comes across as pretty sensible, I suppose. Also check out the note at the end of the article - Zgoda's bet is that with Ollie out, the Wolves waive Booth and sign Ahe(a)rn. On a tangentially-related note, a friend of my wife's did yoga with Booth the other day.

Michael Barry on training camps

This is from the Sunday Times. It's somewhat less depressing than the one I just posted. Yo Lance and Yaroslav, nice kits!

"In harm's way"

I don't mean to bring down anyone's mood, but this is an interesting article from my local paper about a guy who was attacked on a local bike path. The problem with many of these paths in Minneapolis is that they're built on old railway beds, and hence are often deserted (even though they're in the middle of the city); the only traffic is from other cyclists, runners, etc. So they're prime spots for robberies, especially at night.
