First diary attempt, birthday edition...
Hello one and all. I've been enjoying AN since its inception, though I rarely comment, and have been loath to attempt a diary, as it will never match up to the likes of the regular posters here...
However, something happened, so Heinous, so completely unexpected, that I come to you in all humility for advice as to what to do. You see, today is my birthday. (Hint, I turned one year old the day after a nation mourned the loss of its president). Yesterday, as my inlaws were over for Thanksgiving, I was presented with birthday gifts to open...first gift up, completely expected....Borders Gift card....nice, thanks nana and papa...gift giving over, right? Or so I thought...my nine year old daughter runs into the kitchen and brings out another package. My inlaws smile with anticipation...my sister in law, an avon lady (insert premonition of darkness and despair) perches up from her seat on the couch...
SF Weekly Article on new ballpark POSITIVE
Hi,
I did not see this posted on the site, so if has already, apologies. It is a link to a very cool article on the new ball park, and the most positive article to date that I have seen.
I saw it on the Oaklandfans.com website.
One thing I found interesting was the article's take on the whole "retro" ballpark trend.
KNBR - Why oh why do I continue to listen to this dribble
Last night I had to continually remind myself not to yell and wake up my four kids, as I was watching the game; a game with an intense playoff atmosphere.
So, this morning, figuring the A's would get some love (or at least due credit) on the radio, I tuned into what passes for a morning show these days...right as they were going into the top Bay Area sports stories of the day...
I mean, we HAVE to be the number one story, right?????????????????????????????????????
No frikn way anything else, unless something monumental happened while I was asleep.....
I was SCREAMING (once again) while driving to work, as they listed the A's victory as #3 on the list, while posting the Giants trade of two JOURNEYMAN players as #2, and get this: Barriods Bonds taking batting practice in SoCal as the number one sports story in the Bay Area......
Thanks for letting me vent.
A's press release (source, oafc)
OK, here is my first attempt at a diary. I live in eureka, but grew up in the east bay (hayward, san leandro, castro valley), so I was excited to see this press release on the oafc site - they are souurcing the a's site as the reference:
On behalf of the Oakland Athletics ownership group, I have proposed a concept and a site to the Joint Powers Authority (JPA) and the City of Oakland that we believe has tremendous potential for the development of a baseball-only facility for the A's in Oakland. It is our hope to create more than just a ballpark, but one of the next major urban centers in the Bay Area that will greatly add to the economic base and the community image of the city we have called home for the last 38 years.
"A visionary leadership from all parties associated with this project who believe the A's are a community asset is required to help us reach our objective in creating one of the most exciting venues in all of sports, one that will have a positive and lasting impact on the City of Oakland for years to come.
"Our ownership group is willing to incur the vast majority of costs associated with this project; however, to create the major urban development we envision is virtually impossible without some sort of public and governmental support. If public and private forces can be channeled to see this project to fruition, it is our belief the economic benefits to the City of Oakland will far outweigh the public assistance sought.
"We look forward to closely working with the JPA and the City of Oakland in a diligent and expedient manner to further examine the feasibility of this proposal."
