Bringin on Banner 12, Baby!

My Daughter Krystal (who has a huge crush on Russell Westbrook! I told her I would embarrass her!) and I went to the Honda Center to check out the Bruins open practice. It was all about getting loose, having fun giving the crowd a nice little show.

We got there a bit early (yes...I left work because of that sickness that comes around this time every year) and saw BYU...but what I noticed was that, even though it was mostly for fun, Coach Howland never stopped praising, commenting and, well, coaching. The boys were having fun, but also listening to Coach Howland and Daniels. A bit over halfway through the 40 minutes coach called everyone to center court for the shoot off. This is where it got amazing. K Love took one or two shots from midcourt, then moved over the opposite endline, where he proceeded to shoot from FULL COURT. Out of 12 shots I think he hit backboard all but 3 times. Three shots hit the rim...one made it. Incredible. The whole place went loco. Of course...that was the ONE SHOT I DIDN'T get on video! I did manage to get Kevin's reaction though...he bowed to the crowd (the 1:13 mark). The following videos (both are the same) show Kevin's incredible skill, and some just plain fun stuff too. Check out Dragovic's "dunk" at the 1:28 mark.

Youtube has been out tonight, so I dumped a low-res video on one of my sites. Be patient...they do load:

http://www.burrolandia.com/Bruins/index.htm

A higher res version is here:

http://www.burrolandia.com/Bruins/index.html

I also uploaded some pics from the PochoCam to my Flickr! account:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericjasso/sets/72157604172199377/

Nestor or anyone else go ahead and embed these if you wish...it's late and I am lazy tonight!

The Bruin men lost for the first time in five years, 84-79, while the lady Bruins dominated the Trojans 98-65. (All text from the track website)

The Women's win was the FIFTEENTH straight over the Trojans. The meet saw the Bruins sweep four events (800m, 5000m, pole vault and high jump), improve on regional qualifying marks and pick up new regional qualifiers throughout the day. Several Bruins also improved on their national rankings with strong performances on Saturday.

Mens meet: The meet proved full of dramatics and excitement as USC held a predominantly large lead throughout the meet. But, the Bruins charged back, sweeping several events, while a DQ in the intermediate hurdles by a Trojan runner helped pull the Bruins to within reach. With the score tied at 79 all after the triple jump, the meet title was to be decided in the final event of the meet - the 4x400m relay. USC pulled out the win, giving the Trojans their first victory over the Bruins since 2001 by a score of 84-79.

"All Things Considered, March 29, 2007· Andy Hill rode the bench on great UCLA teams coached by the legendary John Wooden a generation ago. Hill never felt Wooden appreciated him or really even knew who he was. But as fate would have it, Hill has developed a deep and powerful friendship with the 96-year-old coach."

We all know how much Coach is loved; it's amazing how he continues to inspire people much later in their lives. Many of us know this story, but it's nice to hear Andy Hill tell it in his own voice. This should be mandatory listening for all Florida fans.

Here is the link to the broadcast:

At the end of the broadcast it says the on Friday the 30th Coach will talk about old school basketball on "Morning Edition". I'll try to find the time...it's a long show. NPR is pretty good about putting their stuff online. If anyone finds a link please post it here.

LAPD gives 2 USC players 'quite a scare'
Receiver Jarrett, lineman Herring briefly detained after getting ride

Updated: 34 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES - USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett and lineman Thomas Herring were briefly detained by police early Tuesday after they were picked up by a female driver in a car that may have been used during a crime, authorities said.

Both players were walking to morning practice about 8 a.m. when a woman offered them a ride, said coach Pete Carroll. As the players were being dropped off, police swarmed the vehicle and handcuffed the woman, Jarrett and Herring.

Carroll said there was an "investigation on the car" and the players were released after it was determined they weren't involved.
