Batting in high leverage situations (or, Rethinking Cliff Pennington)

Thanks to the wonders of Baseball Reference, it is simple to look at stats to see how different players perform in high leverage situations. We've all heard (I'm sure) of the incredible stats Cliff...

Roy Oswalt

I've haven't been posting much lately, although I've caught 3-5 innings of each of the games the last two days. Roy Oswalt was one of the premier pitchers in the mid-2000s. However, since leading...

Where to bat the pitcher?

I've commented on here several times that I'd like to see the pitcher batting 8th. This seems crazy, so I'll lay out my reasons. 1. The pitcher in the 9th spot is antiquated. It dates to a time...

Matchups 7/2

Two young pitchers tonight, so no real history against them. Prado faced Hefner twice and failed to get a hit, striking out once. Thanks to Corbin's start against the Mets last year, there is a bit...

Matchups 7/1

Statistics for current Diamondbacks against Shaun Marcum are here. Good figures overall, with a slash of .302/.353/.460. It will be nice, after the pitchers faced recently, to face someone who...

Don't Panic

I was away from computers for most of the weekend, so when I came back this morning to read the site, it hit me: we are incredibly negative for fans of a first place team. In fact, if I didn't know...

Diamondbacks vs. Tim Hudson

Unfortunately, even with a large sample size (111 plate appearances) the D-backs haven't fared well against Hudson. Still, that team slash of .229/.270/.286 is better than a lot of the pitchers faced on this road trip. Cody Ross leads the team in plate appearances with 29, and hasn't fared well; look for him to sit this game. Gerardo Parra has 8 plate appearances and has gone 3 for 5, with three singles and three walks, getting on base at a .750 clip. Kubel is 3 for 10 against Hudson. The Braves have posted similar numbers against Kennedy: .286/.365/.476, in 74 plate appearances. Although that seems significantly higher, if Cody Ross's .172/.172/.172 (yes, that's right) is removed, the numbers are basically identical, and the chances of Cody playing aren't real good, both because of the RHP and the history.

Matchups 6/28

I've been doing this in a FanShot, but decided to expand it a bit for a post. Career figures by D-backs against Julio Teheran are here. Not a lot of history. Teheran faced the D-backs earlier this...

Pitching and Offense and Hope

Here are the pitchers that have started for the D-backs this season, with their run support. Wade Miley: 4.5 runs per start (but this includes three starts with double digit run support, take...

D-Backs against Stephen Strasburg

I decided to, once again, post our statistics against the starting pitcher. This time, the news is not so good. Then again, that .133/.226/.178 slash can pretty much only go up.

D-backs against Jordan Zimmerman

Led by Martin Prado's .545/.545/.727, current D-backs have done well historically against Zimmerman. That overall slash of .321/.327/.453 is a good bit higher than his overall .248/.294/.386. Hopefully the bats will be hot tonight. Current nationals are .400/.478/.550 against Miley, but with only 23 plate appearances, small sample size argument applies.

What's Wrong With Wade?

The Diamondbacks starter tonight, Miley has struggled this season, to put it kindly. (Although, despite his struggles, he has still managed 8 quality starts out of 15.) His struggles, as was...

Closer Situation

I'm not a Heath Bell defender. He certainly has a way of making games interesting, but that doesn't mean I approve of his method of ensuring that every D-back fan is screaming at the...

Lineup Flexibility

I wrote something like this in a comment, but thought I'd make a Fanpost. Given the offensive futility, lineups need to be flexible, allowing hot players to get maximum at-bats, and also tailored,...

Why I really wish Patrick Corbin wasn't starting tonight

I've been overjoyed to see the performance of Corbin this year. He has certainly been the brightest spot on a rotation that has, to put it mildly, struggled for consistency. But he is young and...
