Bucs Nation An Ode to Running Backs

Here we go. A chart for 'starting' running backs in the NFL per recent depth charts.

The round they were drafted in.

How many probowls they have been involved in since 2008.

I did not include retired RBs, and RBs that have dropped out of 'starter' status.

45 percent of pro bowl spots were taken by first round picks since 2008.

43 percent of starters were drafted in the first round.

This makes a point that to get a 'starting' caliber RB in the first round you have just about the same chance as drafting a CB in the first round. However, an 'all pro' caliber running back is far easier to find in the later rounds then CBs. Which has significant drop off after the first round.

Feel free to inform me of noticeable omissions.

Bucs Nation To Draft a CB or to not Draft a CB

As everyone knows the bucs need a new secondary, and there is an elite CB that will most likely be available to the bucs at the #5 spot. What I find strange is that a ton of fans on this site think we need to draft a running back at #5. Maybe they don't 'get' football, who knows, but to help with my argument here are some stats.

80 percent of all pro bowl selections since 2008 featured CBs drafted in the first round.

38 percent of all 'starting' CBs are first round selections.

Below is a spread sheet of my data, if you see any glaring omissions or errors, let me know and I will adjust.

Bucs Nation The Onion Lays it out better than I could.

TAMPA BAY, FL—The search for a new Buccaneers head coach has continued in Tampa Bay, where last week team management flew in Marty Schottenheimer, former NFL coach and current head of UFL's Virginia Destroyers, to discuss how utterly terrible he would be in the position. "We were fascinated by Marty's embarrassingly dated offensive philosophies, his inability to make defensive adjustments that optimize his on-field personnel, and his tendency to lose his cool in pressure-filled game situations," said Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer, adding that Schottenheimer has proven he has what it takes to win in the NFL "unless it's an important game," and furthermore would have "absolutely no idea" what to do with promising young quarterback Josh Freeman. "Plus, he'd probably bring in his idiot son Brian to coach the offense, completing a totally dismal package." Sources close to the Buccaneers said the meeting "went very well" and Schottenheimer is now the leading candidate to take over the team

I'm always 100 % correct. Listen to me next time losers, unless you want the rangers to win, which is understandable because it will help president perry!

DRaysBay Tampa Bay Rays News

The Rays are rolling, and not even the disruptive departure of Manny Ramirez knocked the wind out of them. (They weren't so smart there, were they?) Compare that to the mishandled mess with Posada. Had Girardi and Cashman not so badly botched things, Posada's apology Sunday could have been the end of it. Instead, the Yankees need a week's worth of hand sanitizer.

Quick personal note, I will not be around this upcoming week much, so let the waterworks begin! Tuesday and Wednesday I will be in (sigh) San Francisco for work, Friday I will be at a Gay Marriage and  after party, Saturday I will be in the city, and Sunday I will be at Mariners vs.Garbage Monsters at Safeco with my brother, who happens to be a Garbage Monster fan. A week in the life of Puppy-D., folks!

Scott Miller of CBS believes that the Rays are looking smarter than ever.

Well, Mr. Miller, the Yankees seemed to end the controversy within a day, so that argument makes no sense.

John Romano thinks that Derek Jeter  has to rank high among the greatest shortstops of all time.

Questions of the week after the jump.

DRaysBay OTTOTD: 4/6/2011 what are you doing with your life while no pro baseball is played in the TB area

I'm a 30 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)

I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious Universities to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

DRaysBay OTTOTD 1/11/11: If you approach me in the parking lot after a late game prepare to get blasted

TAMPA — A a jogger who shot and killed one of two teenagers who confronted him in Town 'N Country will not be charged, the Hillsborough State Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

Thomas Baker, 28, was jogging near his home about 1 a.m. on Nov. 24 when a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old approached him. Baker told deputies he thought they were going to rob and hurt him. He pulled out a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun and shot Carlos Musteliel, 18, several times. Musteliel died.

Authorities did not find a weapon on either teenager. No one involved had a criminal record, deputies said.

Officials did not explain why charges won't be filed

DRaysBay OTTOTD - 12/27/10: What can't Josh Freeman do?

Save obama's political career that's what.

"The president wanted to talk about two things, but the first was Michael,'' Lurie told me. "He said, 'So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance. He was ... passionate about it. He said it's never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail. And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.''

DRaysBay OTTOTD 12/20/10: Happy secessionist day!

Remember it was about states rights, small government, and not letting the federal government trample our rights! Heritage not hate!

South Carolina: “The non-slaveholding states ... have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery” and “have encouraged and assisted thousands of our slaves to leave their homes.”

Mississippi: “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world. ... There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union.”

Georgia: “A brief history of the rise, progress, and policy of anti-slavery and the political organization into whose hands the administration of the Federal Government has been committed will fully justify the pronounced verdict of the people of Georgia.”

DRaysBay OTTOTD 12/14/10 - Liberals use kindles monsters use iPads

Supreme Court judges are supposed to be some of the sagest dudes and ladies around, but even they can't agree on which e-reading device is best. Amazon's multimillion-selling Kindle is the weapon of choice for newly appointed Justice Elena Kagan, however old pro Justice Antonin Scalia prefers to battle the bulge of briefs using his iPad. Who will prevail in this titanic struggle?

That's right. If you prefer an ipad over a kindle, you are pretty much Antonin Scalia.

DRaysBay OTTOTD 12/13/10 - I am DANGER, ACHTUNG, and ??????????????!

My self-summary

WARNING: Want a regular, down to earth guy? Keep moving. I am not the droid you're looking for. Save us both while you still can.

Passionate, and often pig headed activist intellectual seeks siren for love affair, children and occasional criminal conspiracy.

Such a woman should spirited and playful, of high intelligence, though not necessarily formally educated, have spunk, class & inner strength and be able to think strategically about the world and the people she cares about.

I like women from countries that have sustained political turmoil. Western culture seems to forge women that are valueless and inane. OK. Not only women!

Although I am pretty intellectually and physically pugnacious I am very protective of women and children.

DRaysBay OTTOTD 12/09/10 - Wrap it up rayailures

Those NEW YORK BANKERS, have struck again!

I'll have a petition...for Sternberg to sell. This crap is ridiculous. HOW THE HELL DO THE NATS SPEND $126 MILLION, and the Rays spend squat? Anyone want to explain that to me?

Must be some crazy obumbum economic voodoo up there in DC?!!!

The Red Sox will win the World Series for years to come!!!

They got even more stronger with Adrian Gonzalez, too!!!

This really is the beginning of the end for the Rays!!!!

GO BUCS!!!, GO LIGHTNING!!!!!

Just like the last three years!

wow the Rays will probably average less than 15K a game this season at the Trop.

The Red Sox overpaid but they can b/c it was a need once they missed out on Jason Werth. Ownership is not helping getting the Rays fanbase excited when it's a firesale w/ Soriano, Benoit, Crawford, Pena, and Bartlett all gone.....and Garza might be next

No one saw this firesale coming! How will we ever replace people like pena, bartlett, and garza!

The ownership deserves exactly what it will get. I hope they get less than 10k per night. I really do. I'm tired of the charade from this cheap ownership group. Pay up or shut up, Stu.

They deserve another thing that didn't happen in germany/poland circa 1944

DRaysBay OTTOTD 12/6/10 - The bucs are terrible

If you put a shitty product on the field, people are not going to want to pay to see it. It's simple capitalism, and the people of the tampa bay area are voting with their wallets. Until those new york bankers that own the bucs realize they have to spend money to make money, this area will continue to reject the Bucs. Or maybe the city just isn't a football town. Either way, the team is nothing but thugs that pretend they are hurt at the slightest contact. Freeman blew it, once again proving you shouldn't draft a QB in the first round. I just don't get what radio was thinking.

DRaysBay OTTOTD 12/3/10 - only 48 hours until absolut bloody hour

Get hyped.

The only thing that could be better then absolut bloody hour is me getting unbanned from bucs nation in time to participate in the GDT on sunday. I hear we are playing the dirty birds in a throw back game. Sounds good to me, Josh Freeman is undefeated in orange, that's a stat I can wrap my head around!

Also, Sunny is good again. Is this a fluke or a thread? Discuss

DRaysBay OTTOTD 10/25/10: The real reason I was banned from bucem

My pure football knowledge, and my ability to accurately predict the season scared the hell out of the writers at bucsnation. I was a threat that needed to be taken out, otherwise I could very well have taken over the site as lead writer.  For proof please see these quotes.

This guy is going to win the starting spot by week 6.

We’d get so many kids off every game it was great.

DRaysBay OTTOTD 10/23/10: 69 days until the end of the year

- The Rays and Seth McClung have something in common... none of them are playing right now.

-I used to back Joe but 2009 proved to me that he was anchor holding such a talented Tampa team back. N 2010 proved it. He's more of a guidance counsellor than a leader. Troop welfare is one thing but mission accomplishment is first!

-thats an incredible revelation. I didn't know the Rays had never won over 70 games before? As for these other guys Larry Rothschild, Bill Evers, Hal McRae you've mentioned I've never heard of them either. Did they all have illustrious big league careers like Maddon? Rothchild is the worst pitching coach of all time. Hal McRae can at least understand the concept of hitting a baseball and him or his son would be a far more superior hitting coach than Derek Shelton. We'll see what the excuse is when they drop below 70 again... Payroll, Martinez gone, attendance. And if you think Dave Martinez does anything more than walk the lineup card out you're mistaken. When he gets a job his managing will be night and day compared to Maddon. And not even a National League team would want Maddon unless it was the Pirates or an expansion team.

-Stu hired Maddon because he's his yes man. Lou left b/c he wouldn't be a yes man for ownership. Maddon's ideas wouldn't fly in serious baseball towns, and not everyone would be lining up to hire him...only the sabermetrics only group. Now if JoeMa could add common sense to the sabermetric philosophy, then he' be the manager everyone wanted, but until then...the Rays will never win it all, they just can't do it with the philosophy they have going into the playoffs. Pitching beats us every time in playoffs, and always will & it will never change until JoeMa uses his best 9 guys instead of crap players and pitchers in playoff games.

DRaysBay OTTOTD: Barksdale finally gets busted.

It's unclear how widespread Barksdale's abuses were, but in at least four cases, Barksdale spied on minors' Google accounts without their consent, according to a source close to the incidents. In an incident this spring involving a 15-year-old boy who he'd befriended, Barksdale tapped into call logs from Google Voice, Google's Internet phone service, after the boy refused to tell him the name of his new girlfriend, according to our source. After accessing the kid's account to retrieve her name and phone number, Barksdale then taunted the boy and threatened to call her.

DRaysBay OTTOTD: This is why they are the yankees

Tonight's Trop crowd: 28,713

There were a few more bodies at Tropicana Field for Tuesday's second game of the showdown series with the Yankees, as the attendance was announced at 28,713. That was up from 26,907 on Monday, but still well short of a sellout.

Time to go kill yourselves, our starting pitching is imploding a few weeks before the playoffs. Can't wait until next year when we finish in fourth place without CC disrupting the pitchers for longo, and Jennings flopping all over the outfield.

I'm a busy business man, and I like to be prepared for when "shit goes down".

Because of this I choose scottevest for all my tactical clothing needs.

Here is a good example of the kind of clothing one needs in this day and age. It's really hard to find a good trenchcoat that will carry all my gadgets. Combined with thunderwear, you have the perfect combination when you need to travel to the "darker" neighborhoods, or baywalk.

DRaysBay OTTOTD: 6/14/10 time to get our colonial wealth on.

U.S. Discovers Vast Riches of Minerals in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and Blackberries.

DRaysBay Adults that bring gloves to games = Classless

Seriously? You are an adult, and you bring a glove to a watch a baseball game? I bet you pay more attention to foul balls then what is happening on the field too. Why don't you let the kids, and more importantly, the players on the field have a shot at actually catching a foul ball? But nooooo, you have to stand there in your tucked in polo shirt, and braded belt worn out from barely holding in your gut, and jump in front of some twelve year old with your two hundrend dollar glove that was never used on a real field.

You are just a dumb animal that should be ejected from the game as soon as that glove is put on your hand. Man up and catch foul balls like an adult, and let the players, and kids have their fun.

Also, they should reopen auschwitz for anyone that asks for an autograph over the age of 18.
