Big Blue View Why Pats win mattered

When I say "mattered" I mean, Why have I been fist pumping all day?  The basic reason is that most of the Giants and their fans don't think that anyone actually respected the Super Bowl win four years ago.

Big Blue View Worst Losses in Giant's History

I'm not bitter, it's just an interesting discusion.  Bill Simmons has been talking all week about levels of losing and Stomach punch moments.  Obviously, we are not long suffering by any stretch of the imagination but I'm interested from a historical stand point.  Hell, I'm still high from 2007.

Big Blue View It's OK to root for the Cowboys

I know what your thinking, "Queler, you've gone soft," but hear me out.   There is a very real reason to root for the Cowboys.

• The Giants are using a new jersey fabric and a new tailoring template, which has resulted in some small changes that Uni Watch doesn't like. Let's start with the NFL Equipment logo, which used to be positioned on a red triangle of fabric at the base of the collar. That red triangle has now been eliminated, and the logo has been lowered down beneath the collar. As you can see, that means the NFL logo and the team's "ny" logo are now stacked too close together and are also too close to the uni numbers. There's a similar problem on the back of the jersey, where there's a horizontal seam right where the players' names used to be. So they've had to lower the names (which are now sewn directly onto the jersey -- no more nameplates) and now they're too close to the uni numbers. Pfeh.

Meanwhile, equipment manager Joe Skiba has announced a change in pants protocol: When the Giants are forced to wear blue jerseys on the road -- like when they play in Dallas, say -- they'll wear these gray pants (which had previously been worn only with the white jersey) instead of these gray pants (which had previously been worn with the blue jersey, whether at home or on the road). You might ask, as Uni Watch has, why they need two different sets of gray pants to begin with, but that's another issue for another day.

Big Blue View How good was the '07 team

I was thinking about this the other day and it seems timely based on the championship team comparison we've been talking about.  Basically I was wondering if people perceive us to be a bad champion, an abberation.  I guess that's not that unfounded given the achem, uneven regular season.  My argument has always been that the Packers, Cowboys,  and Patriots were consensus top 5 teams that year, and we beat them all successively.  Any of those teams would have been considered legit champs.

Corey Webster, CB, Giants

Webster's paid like a great player now, but he deserved to go to the Pro Bowl last season. Webster broke up 35 percent of the passes thrown at him a year ago, a freakishly high total and the league's best. He was in the top 10 in virtually every pass defense metric we can come up with, and had teams staying away from him by the end of the year. His transformation from healthy scratch in 2007 to shutdown corner in 2008 is remarkable.

I hate linking to the Bleacher Report, but I liked this. They left out a couple I think. Dawkins almost wiping Ike Hilliard off the face of the planet with a late hit on MNF. And the hook and ladder to Ron Dixon to save the Giants season, only to be tackled at the 6 yard line.

Big Blue View Programming Notes

NFL Network has their series "America's Game: The Super Bowl Champions" on this week

The critically acclaimed, Emmy-nominated series America's Game: The Super Bowl Champions airs encore episodes throughout the 2007 season. America's Game is a 41-part series profiling every Super Bowl winner using first-person accounts to tell the story of each championship team. From dynasties to one-shot wonders, from the undefeated to the unexpected, America's Game tells the stories behind the story of all 41 Super Bowl champions.

I caught the beginning of '86 last night.  Here are some more air times to set the DVR

1986: Thursday, May 21, 3:00 PM

            Sat May 23 4:00 PM

2007: Thursday, May 21, 4:00 PM

            Sat May 23 3:00 PM

No 1990 Episode in the next two weeks at least.  It's definately worth watching.  There's a lot more focus on the regular season and history leading up to it.  Bill Parcells might have been the meanest coach in the modern era that somehow still commanded that much respect.  It's just nice to see a different angle other the NFL Films ones we've all seen a million times.

According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, the Browns’ initial demand for Edwards wasn’t just Kiwanuka. They wanted Kiwanuka AND the Giants’ first-round draft pick.

FROM JUSTIN TUCK… "Who knew our D-line needed that much re-hauling? Maybe I was a little surprised that we didn’t try to rectify some other things before going to the D-line," Tuck said. "Obviously, we did need some help on the D-line because we got beat up and worn down at the end of the year. Jerry [Reese, the Giants' general manager] knows exactly what he is doing and he’s proven he’s pretty good in the draft. Hopefully, we can get some secondary help, a couple of extra linebackers, and we have some offensive needs that I’m sure he’s looking at also."

I agree with Tuck. When in doubt, put your big dollars in the defensive line. I’m surprised other teams that have good defensive lines but could make them stronger were not active in chasing Chris Canty or Rocky Bernard. The Bears (and I am sure there are others) come to mind as a team with an abundance of cap room, but they probably felt they were doing well with their defensive line. They finished with 28 sacks, tied for 22nd in the NFL. They did get 21.5 of their sacks from their defensive line, so maybe if they were a little deeper and fresher they might have had more. The Bears had only 11 sacks on third down all year, which doesn’t make you a good third down team. I know they have some strength in their defensive line, but they could have made it stronger had they gone for more talent and taken the Giants’ approach. When you have that much cap room, it makes sense to spend the money on good players and not worry as much about the depth chart. It’s funny, but in the draft, which is all about money, everyone preaches the "pick- the-best-player" theory constantly. But when it comes to free agency, it’s all about needs on the depth chart. Doesn’t make sense to me, yet what the Giants did makes all the sense in the world.

Big Blue View Giants Gmail Theme

via home.comcast.net

If you have Gmail I was fooling around and made a sweet giants theme.  You can know edit your own colors if you have Gmail.  I also made a gmail logo that looks like the giants logo. I wasted so much time doing this I figured I might as well share. Here are instructions using the official giants colors I got off Wikipedia

Go to Setting/Themes/Choose your own Colors

At first you'll have to set two new colors.  Now when you move around on any of the arrows you'll get a color dialog box, and the name of the item your setting is at the top.  So click on the arrow that selects the "Main Backgound"  Click the Plus sign under "Link Color" and set the color to "#192f6b" and click apply.  We'll call that gBlue from now on.  Click the plus sign under Text Color and enter "#ca001a" and click apply.  We'll call that gRed.  Notice they're both on the bottom of every box now.  Set the Background color to "Silver", which is the third from the right on the top row.  Now hopefully the rest with make sense

So here's how I would describe what I just told you to do:

Main Background

  • Background Color: Silver
  • Text Color: gRed
  • Link Color: gBlue

so using that format here's the rest:

Frame

  • Background Color: gBlue
  • Text Color: gRed
  • Link Color: Silver

BOX

  • Background Color: gBlue
  • Text Color: Silver

Box Content

  • Background Color: Silver
  • Text Color: Black
  • Button Bar
  • Background Color: gRed
  • Text Color: gBlue
  • Link Color: Silver
  • Messages

Background Color: White

  • Text Color: Black
  • Link Color: gBlue

Selected Message

  • Background color gRed

Now if your using Firefox, you can get that sweet gmail logo.  Install Greasemonkey then after restarting, install this script.  And just like that the Gmail logo is full of badassary ( I really love the new logo)

You could argue the Big Ten's premier game has become Penn State-Ohio State. It certainly proved true in 2008 and could once again be the case this fall. And Penn State is the last Big Ten home team to beat Ohio State (2005).

Big Blue View 3-4 thoughts

There's been some suggestions that switch to a 3-4 would be good.  I think there are some big problems with that, but I'm an armchair football player, so I thought I'd put it in a FanPost for discussion.  Obviously the biggest problem is the personnel.  As I see it, the biggest need for a successful 3-4 is what Gregg Easterbrook calls a Ticonderoga-class Nose Tackle.  Guys like Ted Washington, who eat up two offensive lineman on every play.  There are so few guys like that in the league, I think that's one of the reasons not a lot of teams play it.

I'm not sure what I would call this scale (size or quickness) but I would order these positions like this:  3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE, 3-4 DE, 4-3 DT.  The positions just don't line up.  Kiwi is probably the one guy who could be a 3-4 OLB, and maybe Tuck could be a 3-4 DE, based on his play inside last year.  A DE in a 3-4 plays more like a tackle and eats up lineman so the LBs can make the plays.  The biggest reasons the giants have gone away from the 3-4 in the last decade is because MIchael Strahan was at least one of the three best 4-3 Defensive Ends of All-Time.

At LB, we can barely field 3 LB's right now, so I don't see how we could field 4.  I think I saw an interview with Accorsi (maybe), where he said one of the biggest reasons for not implementing the 3-4 is the cap.  LB's cost more then lineman.  That's why the Steelers have to turnover their LBs so frequently.  With the money we're going to tie up in Eli and Jacobs, I can't imagine being able to afford a 3-4 for more then a couple of years.

Thoughts?

Big Blue View I gotta say

I'm amazingly upbeat.  The Super Bowl out of nowhere really made my year, it's tough to be too upset when I'm still thinking of it.  We watch sports to have fun, and that was one of the greatest 365 days of Giants football I can remember.

My wife bought me the highlight DVD last year, and I've been waiting for the right time to watch it, but haven't yet.  I'm going to pour a big glass of scotch, pop it in, and remember as far as I'm concerned, this year has been playing with house money. Go Blue

BTW, a #1 and Shockey's #2 seems like a bargain for Boldin

Big Blue View All that work for home field

I heard an interesting thing on the radio.  They basically said, the Giants worked so hard to get the #1 seed, and now they have to face the Eagles, that's a crappy reward.  It's never good if your favored-on-paper to be playing a divisional rival, I know I'm in the minority, but the Eagles terrify me.

Especially compared to Arizona, who is terrible on the road, I would have to imagine that most Giant's fans would rather play Arizona then Philly.  I really can't think of a argument for wanting Philly.

The question (knocking on wood furiously) is would you sacrifice possible home field next week (with a Carolina win) to get the Cards instead this week?  Especially since I haven't heard of a massive Carolina home-field advantage, I say yes.  This is of course not taking into account the swagger we would have from being #1 and have just beaten the Panthers.

PS.  It was Bill Simmons's podcast I heard this on, and was immediately followed by the suggestion that the #1 seed gets to choose which team they want, which would be massively entertaining just from the instant bulletin board material it would give the chosen team.  I think that's an awesome idea.

Yeah, dude. That’s totally legit. You can tell because it’s a legal formation. No blogger would know to put seven men on the line. There were several other napkins sent to us with plays chicken scratched on them, all of which had different formations, yet two things in common: Jason was always going deep for a touchdown and T.O. was always on the sidelines being laughed at.

On Wednesday, Giants general manager Jerry Reese, who helped engineer last season's Super Bowl run, said that if Burress survived a blizzard of legal issues, he could be a Giant in 2009. "Provided he plays by Giants rules," Reese said. Without going into detail, Reese said the Giants' front office was on the same page about Burress's possible future with the Giants -- namely that he had one -- provided he was not in jail and provided he had a 180-degree attitude adjustment. These are huge ifs. The fact that the Giants are considering taking Burress back is either a sign of tremendous loyalty or of a reluctance to publicly kick a man when he is down.

Big Blue View Bill Simmons looks in to our future (New Stadiums)

Simmons column today talks about the diminishing home field advantage teams have because of the new stadiums that slight the die-hard fan.

From ESPN

The bad news is that, with just a few exceptions, it's now more entertaining to invite your friends over, tailgate in your backyard and watch your favorite team on TV. You get the replays. You get HD. You have your own bathroom. You're saving money. You can stand up if you want. You don't have a commute. If you have the NFL package, you can flip around to other games during commercials. What's the downside? You got me. I had 10 times more fun watching the Pats-Jets game at a New York City bar last week than I would have had at the actual game. And the sad thing was, I knew that would be the case.

That seems to the way we will be heading soon with the new stadium and PSLs.  It's a shame too because after witnessing the massivbe home-field advantage at Seattle two years in a row, it seemed like Coughlin was determined to spread the word to the fans that it mattered.  The few Giants games I've been to in the last few years, I've been disapointed at the level of crowd involvment.  Coming the chaos at Penn State, I imagine any NFL game would be a disapointment to me.  But it's clear that when you can get an entire stadium of people who know when to be loud, it makes a huge differnce.   Sadly, I've never had as much fun at a Giants game as I've had at a Penn State game, but really between the price, the "wine and cheese crowd" as Simmons said, and the TV timeouts, I guess it's not that suprising.

Big Blue View 1950 New York Giants??

Ok, so my wife just bought what I think is a pretty sweet looking Giants hat.  I prefer to have the NY logo myself.  Interestingly, enough I finally a Lids in DC that had a ton of Giants hats.  I wondered why, until I walked in, and saw an employee dressed head-to-toe in Giant's gear.  (In case anyone in the area is wondering, it was the Lids in Tyson's Corner).

Hwl_medium

via lf.hatworld.com

What I don't get, is why the logo says "1950" on it.  As far as I know Mara bought the franchise in 1925.  Every other hat I have says "Est. 1925".  Can anyone shine any significance on this?
