Poll: Should we replace Bobby Carpenter with Jason Williams?

Barbie is a girl.  There was a key play when Carpenter could have sacked Eli, but Eli was able to stay upright long enough to flick the ball to Boss for a big gain.  Seriously, how hard is it to bring down Eli?  I know he is good in coverage and all, but Jason Williams is faster (4.49 40), is much stronger, and has a killer instinct which Barbie C lacks.  Maybe he might make some rookie mistakes, but he would also make big plays that turn games around.

Williams almost single handily beat the Razorbacks coming from a I-AA school (western Illinois):

Arkansas … Williams opened the season with seven tackles (six solo), wreaking havoc in the Razorbacks' backfield, as he registered two sacks for minus-14 yards, broke up a pass and caused two fumbles … On the season's first kickoff, he had a violent collision with kick returner Elton Ford, jarring the ball loose at the Arkansas 15, where WIU recovered it … Later in the first stanza, he sacked QB Casey Dick for an 11-yard loss and on the next snap, caused an interception when he forced Dick out of the pocket to make an ill-advised toss that the Leatherneck's Tim Jackson picked off near mid field … With 1:21 to go in the first half, Williams raced past All-SEC center Jonathan Luigs to sack Dick for a 3-yard loss … He pulled the ball out of receiver Carlton Salters' hands at the Arkansas 35 late in the third quarter, as WIU recovered, converting the turnover into a 4-yard touchdown run by All-American tailback Herb Donaldson.

The guy is a beast.  CBSsports compares him to James Harrison.

Quincyyyyy's highly anticipated 7 round mock and Draft Notes (OT edition)

Update:  I was alerted that because of the Holland trade we don't have a 5th this year.  So lets just assume that we traded Roy for a 5th and a bag of chips.

The draft notes are below my updated mock:

1. OT Anthony Davis Scarlet Knight

http://www.scarletknights.com/football/images/2009/preview/davis.jpg

Doug Free has done an admirable job replacing Colombo, but Davis, a junior, is more talented and can step in immediately and replace Flozell if the Cowboys decide to part ways with him.  However, the interview process will be crucial as Davis does have some character issues.

2. DE/DT Vince Oghobaase Blue Devil

http://image.cdnl3.xosnetwork.com/pics24/400/HG/HGJEOEECKJYZGDK.20081110162547.jpg

Injuries and questionable strength will keep this big athletic lineman from being taken earlier.

3. CB/FS/PR Akwasi Owusu-Ansah Hawk

http://www.psacsports.org/images/2009/8/25/rp_primary_Owusu-Ansah2.jpg

This talented division II corner has good size and can contribute as a return man.

4.  WR/KR Marcus Easley Husky

This wide receiver caught everyone by surprise when he suddenly broke out in early October.  He is big, fast, and a playmaker.  No I'm not talking about Miles Austin.  I'm talking about Marcus Easley, who is climbing the draft boards as we speak.

5. NT Torrell Troup Golden Knight

http://www.centralfloridafuture.com/polopoly_fs/1.1863677!image/3121526553.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_240/3121526553.jpg

Big space eater on UCF's number 2 ranked rush defense.

6. C/G Reggie Stephens Cyclone

http://www.football.com/UserFiles/Image/NCAA/iowa%20state/reggie%20stephens%20iowa%20banner.jpg

One of the biggest centers in the country at 330 lbs.

7. FS/SS Jordan Lake Bear

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/bay/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/1392711.jpeg

Not very athletic but he is well built and a good tackler.  He would be at the very least be a good special teams player.

Wow. Now this is just sad. Roy needs to be benched if what he says is true.

Marcus Easley is like a faster version of Miles Austin if you can believe it.

Someone who gets a pass and someone who doesn't (poll)

Romo gets a pass.  I'll go even further: I'll give him a pat on the back.  He played through a sore back, had a relatively low turnover game, and led his team to victory in the end.  There were many a time he avoided the rush and receivers still weren't getting open.  He didn't get frustrated and force a pass.  He smartly threw the ball away.

Yes he overthrew receivers, but lets not forget he got nailed in the back early in the game and soldiered on.  This wasn't his best game, but he let our defense win the game for us and played smart.  And that is why he gets a pat on the back.  He played a smart game.

Reason we have trouble with blitzers: Andre Gurode may not be smart enough

The reason why we have trouble with blitzers may be this guy:

Quincyyyyy's highly anticipated 7 round mock draft

By popular request OT will get first nod and DL will get the next.

1. OL Ciron Black Tiger

http://www.tigerrag.com/wp-content/uploads/ciron-black_low.jpg

He can compete with Brewster and Free to be the heir apparent to either tackle spot, and has ideal size to be a very good guard.  He sort of reminds me of a shorter version of Flo sans the penalties.  If Anthony Davis comes out then he may be an option here.

2. DE Jared Odrick Nittany Lion

http://blog.pennlive.com/joehermitt/2008/11/large_ODRICK.jpg

Great motor and plays the run very well.  I also think he is a better pass rusher than he gets credit for.  Duke's Vince Oghobaase is also supposed to be a very talented D-lineman, so he might get consideration here as well.  However, Vince has had an injury plague season, so I'm not sure how that is going to affect his draft status.

3. NT Dan Williams Volunteer

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/67/676335.jpg

Fills up space and has a high motor.  May be a little underrated.

4. CB/Returner Walter Thurmond III Duck

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh163/buckshot200/010thurmond.jpg

Will provide depth in the secondary and can contribute as a return man.

5. C/G Reggie Stephens Cyclone

http://www.football.com/UserFiles/Image/NCAA/iowa%20state/reggie%20stephens%20iowa%20banner.jpg

One of the biggest centers in the country at 330 lbs.

6. OT Jared Veldheer Charger

http://www.facebook.com/profile/pic.php?uid=AAAAAQAQiF-a409L41v3elnlnEXYbgAAAAgxsMTxuNC5Sw%2C%2C

Extremely athletic and physically imposing small school prospect at 6'8 320.  He supposedly runs the 40 in 4.8.  He is this year's Joel Bell, although Joel Bell didn't end up getting drafted...

7. FS/SS Jordan Lake Bear

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/bay/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/1392711.jpeg

Not very athletic but he is well built and a good tackler.  He would be at the very least be a good special teams player.

Couple of Notes:

Check out Draft Tek's draft simulator.  It's a lot of fun (if you are in to that sort of thing).

A small school NT weighing 355 lbs at 6'1.  I also noticed he has two sacks this season for a 6 and 7 yard loss and a couple of pass deflections.  Depending how he looks at his pro day he may be worth a late round pick.

A good problem to have: no major draft needs (poll)

I have been thinking about our needs for '10 draft the past week or so and I'm have trouble thinking of our needs.  When our scouts evaluate the draft they compare the prospects up against the players on the current roster.  I doubt Montrae Holland will be back; he is just no worth his price tag.  Allen Rossum will likely be gone, and Marcus Spears will probably sign somewhere else for bigger money, just like Canty did.

So our 53 man roster going into the draft will likely be this:

Offense: 25

QB: Romo, Kitna, McGee

RB: Barber, Felix, Choice

WR: Austin, Williams, Ogletree, Crayton, Hurd

TE: Witten, Bennett, Phillips

FB: Anderson

OT: Flo, Colombo, Free, Brewster, McQ

OG: Davis, Kosier

C: Gurode, Preston, Procter

Defense: 24

DE: Olshansky, Bowen, Hatcher,

NT: Rat, Siavii

OLB: Ware, Spencer, Butler, Curtis Johnson, Octavien, Brandon Williams

ILB: James, Brooking, Carpenter, Jason Williams, Hodge

Safety: Ken Hamlin, Sensebaugh, Mike Hamlin, Watkins

CB: Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball

Special Teams: 4

K: Folk, Buehler

P: McBriar

LS: L.P. Ladoucer

Scanning over the roster there are three areas of mild concern: D-line, o-line, and DB.  I say mild concern because we have good starters at all positions, except for maybe the DE spot.  However, I think we will be in a good situation with Bowen and Hatcher competing for the starting spot.  So really at this point we are drafting for backups.

At o-line we have our starters set for next year, and possibly a future LT in Free.  Although there is concern about the quality of backup center.

We have good starters and young talent at DB, but having a roster with only 8 DB's is sort of playing with fire.

This makes it difficult to draft first day prospects because you are looking for players who can make an immediate impact in the near future.  Thus, I'm having trouble thinking of positions we could draft with our second and first round picks.

So what says you?

Update: I have been doing a little research and apparently Leonard Davis's contract will cost us 8 mill in 2011, and it would only cost us less than 5 mil against the cap to cut him.  Furthermore, Kosier’s contract is up in 2011. So guard actually may be a need in 2010. So if you look at the poll I added guard as an option.
