Mosely: Steve Smith of Giants is almost better than Roy Williams

Josh from Winston Salem, N.C., thinks I'm too hard on Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams: Mr Mosley, why dont you believe in Roy Williams? He emerged as the No. 1 guy in Detroit by his third year, and in his fourth year, had 838 yards in 12 games, which is about an 1,120-yard season. I understand that Calvin Johnson is playing with bad quarterbacks like Roy did and putting up better numbers, but it doesnt mean Roy is not a 1000-yard reciever, it just means Calvin Johnson is better. Can you name me a wide receiver in the NFC East that is better then Roy Williams?

Mosley: Josh, call me Matt. When a player has been in the league five seasons and only has one 1,000-yard season, then I don't think you can call him a "1,000-yard receiver." I think Williams is an exciting player who can occassionally take over games. But I'd want my No. 1 receiver to consistently make an impact. His career in the NFL has been anything but consistent. And here's my list of Beast receivers who are better than Williams: DeSean Jackson of the Eagles, Santana Moss of the Redskins and I'd almost put Steve Smith of the Giants ahead of him -- based on last season's results. Smith makes clutch catches on a consistent basis. I've only seen Williams put up big numbers once -- and it was in Mike Martz's anti-run offense in Detroit.

link

Even though I don't agree with him, I can see how someone could say Jackson and Moss are better. But Steve Smith almost better than Roy? The guy is like a third receiver. This has to be one of the stupidest things that Mosely has ever written.

Why so much hate for Roy? I understand that Roy has underachieved some since he has been in the legue, but is all of this hate he is recieving necessary? Give the guy a break. There are a lot of mediots that are counting their chickens before they hatch. I hope Roy makes them eat their words.

It's time to pimp your pet cat!

A pet cat is a Parcellism for a draft prospect that you have an unhealthy obsession for. Given the fact that the NFL Draft (a.k.a. Christmas) is just around the corner I thought this was a good time for everyone to pimp their pet cats on one thread.

Even though I have never watched him play, my pet cat in this draft is ROGER ALLEN, a big powerful guard. He is 6'3'' 326 lbs and benched the 225 38 times. But most importantly is his last name is ALLEN!!! Just like another big powerful guard who played for us once upon a time.

Anywho, apparently he is a good football player as well. He is a fast rising prospect, and NFL Draft Scout gives him a very good grade.

Here is a taste of his scouting report courtesy of NFLDC:

Run Blocking: Allen shows the loose hips and strong hand strike on contact to dominate the defender. He is a very good screen-and-wall off type who works hard to finish. He can punish his man when driving off his initial step and is a fine road grader who can drop his weight and drive through his blocks, thanks to above average leg strength. He is very good at using his hands to lock on (see 2008 Pittsburg State, Fort Hays State and Augustana games) and has a keen understanding for positioning. He has very good balance on the move, which is evident by his ability to land on second-level defenders. He will struggle with balance when he gets his base too narrow, but that is rare to happen. He displays good consistency in attempts to seal and wall off while working in unison with his center, showing ease of movement playing in space. When he gets position on a defender, he knows how to use his mass and hand punch to shock and jolt. He is also especially effective at gaining movement when he has an angle on people and works hard to maintain position and get movement at the point of attack. GRADE: 6.9

Pass Blocking: Having allowed just one sack in his last two years, Allen has done well in protecting his quarterback. He plays flat-footed and generates a strong anchor and power base. He uses his hands well to catch the defender and is quick to recover vs. counter moves. He has very good short area kick slide and hand usage, showing proper knee bend to quickly redirect. He is equally effective when anchoring and locking out vs. power as he is when sliding and adjusting to quickness. He uses his hands well to set and hold off on contact and has more than enough strength to anchor (could use more bulk for the NFL level). GRADE: 6.8

Character: Allen is a perfect mentor for the team's younger players. He has no known off-field issues and is the type that will play through pain. He communicates well with his teammates and staff and is highly respected by the organization. He is mature beyond his years and shows great responsibility, taking pride in his leadership ability. GRADE: 6.9

Compares To: BRIAN WINTERS, Kansas City -- Like Winters, Allen has been a model of consistency throughout his career. You can also see a little of Larry Allen (ex-Dallas and San Francisco) in his play, as he shows the same tenacity, brute strength and uncanny instincts to consistently be in position to lock on and control the defender. He is a true warrior who played part of the 2008 season with a shoulder injury that would sideline most others. With a weak crop of major college talent at this position, Allen could turn out to be the Cinderella story of the 2009 draft, especially since the shoulder injury that bothered him during 2008 was recently given a clean bill of health from renowned surgeon, Dr. James Andrews.

Quincyyyyy's highly anticipated FINAL MOCK DRAFT!

Note: I didn't like the players that are rated around our 51st pick, so I traded down to the third round for a future pick, probably a second.

3a. CB/FS Sherrod Martin Trojan

One of the best cover safeties in the draft, and can play corner if need be. Martin is also willing contributor in the run game. He would be a great replacement for Hamlin if our front office believes Hamlin was a one year wonder.

3b. ILB Jasper Brinkley Gamecock

After his sophomore campaign Brinkley was considered a first day prospect, then he injured his knee. This off season it looks like he is back to his old self and in great shape.

4a. WR Jarrett Dillard Owl

Despite his lack of size and speed, Dillard has fantastic agility, route running, and jumping ability. If nothing else, he'll at least be a terror to deal with in the slot.

4b. NT/DE Chris Baker Pirate

Baker, a versatile 3-4 d-lineman, has the size and stout frame you would expect from an NT, but he also has the athleticism, explosiveness, and long arms you want in a DE.

4c. LT Joel Bell Paladin (trade two 5ths)

Bell is a big guy who can move and dominated at Furman, but because he played against lesser competition he should be available in the middle rounds.

5a. G Roger Allen Griffon (trade 6th and both 7ths)

Allen has great size and fantastic power and strength as he put up 38 reps on the bench. How poignant would it be to have a big powerful 'Allen' manning the LG position again.

5b. CB Don Carey Spartan

Carey is a small school talent, but has good measureables and production. He also has experience at both CB and safety.

6. OLB/pass rusher Phillip Hunt Cougar

May get dominated in the run game because of his lack of size and strength. He can, however, be a terror off the edge, as he racked up 14 sacks as a senior and 10 as a junior. He also has the athleticism to drop back into coverage.

Priority UDFA QB Drew Willy Buffalo

Even though he went to a small school, he dominated the competition as you would expect him to. He has decent arm strength but is pretty accurate and has great intangibles.

To all the Marcus Freeman haters

How fortuitous this article should come out just as I post my mock:

Although being selected with the No. 1 pick seems highly unlikely for the former Buckeye, Freeman is proving that he belongs among the elite linebackers entering the draft. He has performed brilliantly in each of his last three showings, starting with the Senior Bowl, NFL draft combine and Pro Day.

Friday March 13, was no bad omen for Freeman as he blew NFL teams away with his performance at the school's pro day. He ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash; posted a 4.06 short-shuttle and ran a 6.60 in the 3-cone drill. Freeman had the fastest time among linebackers at the combine in the short-shuttle with a 4.12 and beat that time at the school workout. If that wasn't enough, his performance during position drills was near-perfect.

"People talked about how well I did at the combine, but for me I knew those weren't my best times," Freeman said Sunday. "I wanted to go into the pro day and make sure that I did my best. I was very pleased with my performance after the workout was over"....

Freeman is also scheduled to travel to Dallas to meet with the Cowboys early next month.

so we have a private meeting with this kid. We only do that with the players we really like. He is a really good cover lber, and has enough bulk to play inside. He would be a very nice replacement to Burnett, and maybe a starter in a year or two.

Update: I just want to make it clear that I made this mock based in part on who we have shown interest in. These players include Freeman, Dillard, and Roger Allen.

How bad was Tony Romo's December play?

There is a lot of talk about how poorly Romo played in December. His QB rating was a hair over 70. Obviously not good. But when put into it's proper context it is not bad either.

Let's look at the 4 defenses he played in December: Pittsburgh, Giants, Ravens, Eagles. Their respective ranking in terms passer rating was 2, 8,1, and 5. All in the top ten and 3 in the top 5. The average passer rating for all four teams was... 68.4. (Not even taking into account the throwing conditions in Pittsburgh in December)

Now I'm not trying to say Romo played perfectly. He most definitely didn't. Nor am I saying he doesn't need to improve. He does. But when the media acts like Romo carries around some December curse, lets just try to keep it all in perspective and put things in their proper context.
