matrices/markov chains and statistics
I'm working on a project for school about how matrices and markov chains are used in baseball statistics. Most of what I've found has been very vague (and don't show any specific calculations). I just thought I'd see if any of the more stat savvy posters knew of any helpful articles on the subject.
young neal, strasburg, etc.
Article about a youth team from 1999 with 4 guys now in pro ball.
There's also a picture, including a young Thomas Neal, Strasburg, and Brett Bochy, as well as pitcher Mike Leake.
some quotes from the press conference
From Baggs. The message I get is that is that they have not done as grant hoped, and realized the problems with the season. More mentions of bunting, being more aggressive, velez will play, aaa stats dont matter and posey's not ready, etc. Oh well.
questions re exercise and diet
So I'm trying to start getting in better shape, but I really don't know much of anything about fitness and I've heard some things from people that I was a little confused about.
For instance, I have heard many times to build muscle, you must eat a surplus of protein / calories so your body can build muscle - so I am wondering, does that mean that most people gain some fat along with muscle mass? And what would happen with weight training if you do not eat a caloric surplus?
In which case, does that also mean that to reduce body fat most people also lose some muscle mass? And is it impossible to gain muscle and lose fat from the same workout over the same period of time, sort of a general fitness improvement? (I have read that weight training can lead to less fat in the area, something to do with metabolism, but I don't really know)
Oh, and one more question. I've also heard people say getting protein within, say, 30 minutes after a workout helps build muscle. Does this sound accurate, and would the exercise still be effective without this?
I know these questions are very basic and probably should be obvious, but I would appreciate some help. Thanks.
sandoval adjustments (courtesy of fangraphs)
I was looking at pablo's fangraphs page recently and found some of the numbers pretty interesting. I thought I'd try to see how the league has adjusted to him since last year. Of course, the 2008 sample size isn't ideal, but it's not terribly small either. Here are some of the more interesting things I found.

speed off bat data
Saw this interesting article on beyond the boxscore re speed of batted balls. There's some good stuff in the comments section, too, so be sure to check that out.
Good news for Lewis, not for burriss though.
Best pitches in baseball (2007)
It's an old article, but I thought it was pretty interesting. (I wonder where Timmy's pitches would come out, especially his changeup.)
Btw, check out #3 and #7 for the fastball list.

wilson on comcast? can never tell if he's serious
I noticed he said something about getting a show on comcast - has anyone heard anything about this? Maybe he's being interviewed, but when?
Also, I have to admit his twitter page entertains me. I don't use it for anything else. So far some of the things he's mentioned:
-plans for a "rap off"
-cutting a hole in his hat for his mohawk
-asking god for a text saying "game on"
-running down the street with his friend's stolen lunch, while cops watch
-Rhona Mitra=sexiest vampire
-he feels like a ninja on the mound
-almost getting into a car crash on the way to the park
-another levitation reference and the idea of throwing 100 mph at random stuff
From SI - sources say a-rod tested positive for steroids in 03
The article notes that even if he did test positive, there was no penalty for it at the time. Just thought this was an interesting new piece of info with the bonds steroid thing right now, even though it is far from certain.
Lincecum delivery stuff on mlb network
I didn't see this part linked to before, just the interview. There are some pretty cool clips from tim when he was younger here.
(One question: can anyone tell what he says about marichal's delivery around 2:05)
I lol'd when the analyst said he had "reflexes like a mongoose" too.
aaron king mechanics
He's been on the community prospect poll for a while, and he has unusual mechanics, so I thought this was an interesting (if discouraging) read.
way OT: ultimate rickrolls
With so much CC and free agent talk right now, we haven't had much OT stuff recently, and this link seemed perfect.
The second category in SI's poll links to several great rickrolls, most of which I'd never seen before. And if anyone has some good rickroll stories or videos they know of, I'd love to see them.
Strasburg on driveline mechanics
I happened to come across this analysis recently. Not that he'll fall to us in the draft (I assume of course, at least barring any absolutely ridiculous contract demands). Still interesting to see.
Beyond the box score ranks players by position
Here are Beyond the box score's rankings for first basemen (other positions are linked to on the beyond the box score page). The rankings are a combination of offensive stats, defensive stats, and position. As you can guess, it's not pretty for the Giants. Winn is ranked 5th best right fielder, but there's not much good news past that. Velez, Castillo, Bowker, Ochoa, etc. all are in the bottom 5 at their positions.
phelps gets spring training invite
According to sfgiants.com, phelps signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Another decent move to kick off the offseason. Low risk, moderate reward.

I haven't seen this posted yet, but if there's anything feel free to delete this.

zito video
I found this linked to on driveline mechanics. Not a whole lot of new information, but some interesting stuff with his curveball grip.
Giants scouting Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa
I don't think this has been posted yet, I just saw it on ESPN.com.
The giants were listed as one of several teams scouting the japanese amateur pitcher Junichi Tazawa.
The article says he is 5'11", and throws 88-93 with "so-so" control, and has a curve and forkball.
McMains and Wald release album "Down on the Farm"
While I was on MILB.com, I stumbled across an article mentioning Derin Mcmains and Jake Wald's second album, "Down on the Farm," about life in the minors. Wald plays the guitar while McMains sings. Baseball-themed country music? I never thought I'd see the day. Anyway, here's the link: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080522&content_id=402411&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp.
I really hope these guys make it to the bigs, at least for a cup of coffee.
