Longoria calls out Area

Earlier this year, it was considered a growing moment for Longoria's leadership when he was willing to call out a teammate if it warranted it.  Now it appears he's willing to call out the whole...

1B/DH Options Abound for 2011

Thanks to an unfortunate injury, you can add another name to the potential DH list in 2011:  Magglio Ordonez.  Ordonez, with the injury, won't collect the necessary at bats to make his 2011 vesting...

Burrell or Bradley?

16

Last offseason there was a good debate on this website on who we should pursue as our DH. Here Bradley was listed as a prime candidate. But the Cubs overpaid and we went with Burrell. Fast forward to now and neither team got what they wanted. Bradley was placed in a high-stress situation and Burrell apparantly never adjusted to switching leagues and positions. Would a change of scenery do them both well? The Times Romano believes a swap (if the Rays got additional salary relief for Bradley's 12 mil 2011 salary) would be a good idea. So the question is, now that the Rays may have a chance to go back and make the decision all over again...would you change it? Which would you rather have (if the Cubs pay most of his 12 mil 2011 salary), Burrell or Bradley?

Great homestand, great attendance

39

A 6-3 record in a 9 game homestand is pretty good, and so is an attendance of 275,252 in that span. That's an average of 30,583. There were a lot of reasons to show up at the park on this homestand. The Yankees. The Red Sox. 2 concerts. The next homestand will be more telling. 3 against Toronto. 3 against Baltimore. 3 against Texas. Hopefully we can average 25k during that 9 game stretch.

Jennings has nothing left to prove at AA

12

With the Montgomery game in the 7th, Jennings is 2 for 2 with 2 walks, putting him on base 4 times. His batting average is .329, his OBP is about .410, among the lead leaders in walks and stolen bases, now has more walks than K's...this kid is ready for AAA. The only issue with him has been his health. He's ready for Durham...hopefully they send him up by Aug 1st. * Hellickson also pitched well. 6IP, 1 ER, 6K * Matt Gorgen made his AA debut. 1 shutout inning with a K. Hopefully we see more nights like this for quite some time.

What is Brignac's worth?

14

There is a reason he has the nickname the Cajun God of Baseball. He filled in well when Bartlett went down earlier in the year. His defense is one of the best in AAA. But he used to be known for his massive offensive potential. Back with the Rays affiliate Southwest Michigan he led the team with 15 HRs and 29 doubles. In 2006, at 20 years old, he combined to hit .321 with 24 home runs and 99 RBIs at Class A Advanced Visalia and Double-A Montgomery. But as he advanced to AAA, the offense didn't seem to come with him. But now, over his last 10 games, over half of his hits have been for extra bases, including 4 home runs. The question was tossed around earlier this season about Brignac's worth. Someone mentioned a possible Brignac for Jeff Clement trade a month or so ago. At this point, you'd have to think his value has risen. He has more XB hits than Matt Laporta, the main piece in last year's CC trade. Better numbers than Alcides Escobar, except for steals. There doesn't seem like there's another comparable SS in upper minors. If he continues this tear, his value should be sky high this offseason.

Time for a new mancrush

Maddon's Starting Rotation Inconsistency

11

In today's start, Maddon yanked Niemann in the 5th for a pinch-hitter in a key situation. It worked out well and was probably the best decision. But when I look at Niemann's overall line, he only gave up 2 runs in 4 innings, in other words, he was doing a good job of damage control despite not having his best stuff. I'm trying to figure out why he doesn't give the same treatment to Sonnanstine. As much as I love Maddon, he's giving Sonnanstine the benefit of the doubt way too much, and probably not enough to Niemann. At this point you can roll the dice and anticipate better odds with Niemann than Sonny, who's among the league leaders in homeruns given up. In this case, Maddon needs to start looking at Sonny as the Sonny of this year and not from last year.
