Don't Get Too Excited
As happy as the W over the Bills made me, I thought that the team took a step backwards. After the 1st drive, we had virtually no offense. Frank Gore was completely shut down, and we had a hard time sustaining drives. Yes, we did execute in the red zone, and yes, we did close out a game. However, I am not too worried about execution. I think that the longer Singletary coaches, the more disciplined the 9ers will become.
We beat a 6-6 Bills team that has lost 5 of its last 6 games. Further, they played much of the game without thier starting QB, missed 2 FGs, and went for it on 4th down.
Meanwhile, we faced a much better Dallas team and outplayed them in the first quarter. If we had executed, we would have had a chance to legitimately beat a very good team. 6 points in 3 trips to the red zone (and a blown Pass Interference call)? Huge momentum swing on T.O.s long TD catch? Rossum's injury that left the 9ers with the ball (and without an amazing return man) at the 1 yard line and the offense in trouble (I wonder how the avg. yards per drive changes if you start with the ball at your own 1 yard line)?
Bad luck, semi-poor officiating, lack of execution, and a big momentum swing took the 49ers out of the game. Meanwhile, against the Bills we had good luck, and executed properly and barely got the win.
I don't know what I think about the current state of the 49ers. What I do know, is that I hope the 9ers that played the Cowboys, and not the 9ers that played the Bills, show up on Sunday.
