Thanks S@H for sending this to my Girlfriend
The other week I managed to win a fancy Nos Audietis scarf from Sounder at Heart. This would have been a fantastic prize for myself, but I already had purchased one when they first were released. After serious deliberating and pacing about in my Sperry's to determine what do my extra scarf I eventually decided it would make a wonderful romantic gift for my girlfriend who I had been dating for about a month. Things have been going quite well you see. We both live in New York so you can imagine the mutual joy we have had in finding another Pacific Northwestern on the East Coast. We do strange Cascadian things that many in this area don't understand like only drinking microbrews, asking if the food is local, use 101 different words to refer to the rain, scoff and Dunkin Donuts Coffee, and, most importantly, watch Major League Soccer. It's nice to have someone in my life that "gets it" and this gift of a soccer scarf would show that appreciation and understanding. There is only one small hiccup in this relationship though. Despite being a Cascadian she comes from a place in the PNW that is about a 4 hours drive south from Seattle. Oh well. I can overlook that and it doesn't get in the way. And she's okay with that too. I think this picture captures the enthusiasm, joy, and happiness she had upon receipt of this gift mailed by my friends at S@H. I had to add a few birds to hide some other birds that might not be appropriate, but I think she's okay with me putting birds on things.

Thanks again Nos Audietis for mailing this her way. You will never yacht alone! Also, I loved the note sent along with it (pictured after the jump). Happy Bye Week everyone.

Kasey Keller will be Sounders broadcaster for 2012
Looks like Keller will be the color commentary for next season. Curious to see who the play-by-play partner will be.
Fixing Major League Soccer’s Font Problem
Even an attractive kit looks bad with an ugly typeface.
Carrasco Suspended and Fined
"Servando Carrasco has been suspended for one game and fined $500 for a reckless challenge on Chicago Fire forward Patrick Nyarko in a game last Saturday."
Personally I think it is a fair decision. That was a pretty nasty tackle by the rookie midfielder and I thought he was lucky not to have been shown a red card.
G2S Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami Relief Effort
Gorilla FC is hosting an event to raise money for the American Red Cross Japan relief effort this Saturday TODAY, March 26th. You are all invited to have fun and help support the American Red Cross! The event will be held at Garage Billiards where you can register a team to take part the bowling tournament. Additionally a few Sounders FC players will be in attendance for autographs and photos. There will also be a silent auction and raffles throughout the event. This will be a great event to have fun with fellow Sounders supporters and support a great cause. More information after the jump!
MLS 2011 Playoff Format Revealed
"The league’s new structure will include the top three seeds from each conference and four wild card berths – regardless of conference affiliation – but the postseason will now include two play-in games for those wild card teams."
Seems pretty silly to me. If you acknowledge that the playoffs will probably change again as more teams are added, why not just get rid of conferences and do the top 8 where 1st seed plays 8th, 2nd plays 7th, and so forth as long as we have a balanced schedule.

Transcript from Keller Press Conference
"I think MLS has figured out a lot of things over short period of time. Originally it was a case of soccer-specific stadiums were going to cure all the problems. But a soccer-specific stadium in the wrong area is just as bad as having a 80,000-seat stadium with 15,000 people in it. Now they've really figured it out more or less. And it doesn't hurt going into cities where they have a pretty good idea that they're going to have a great fan-base. They found that in Toronto. They obviously have found that here in Seattle. They're continue to find that in Portland and Vancouver and Montreal. Sometimes you can't force a product on a community that doesn't really want it. I think that's kind of happened many years in Miami. Everybody has always said, 'God, we've got to have a team in Miami,' and every time they put a team there, nobody comes out and watches it. So why keep putting a team there? I don't know. It seems kind of common sense."
New York Times Article on World Cup Corruption and Vote Delay
"Continued allegations of corruption involving top officials at FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, have called into question the integrity of Thursday’s votes that will decide the host countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments — the latter of which is being sought by the United States.
The Swiss chapter of Transparency International, an anticorruption organization, has called for the votes to be postponed until 'full light is shed' on a spate of recent bribery allegations published and broadcast by European news media."
MLS Cup Overnights Plunge 44%
And the solution to increasing popularity is more playoff games?
Zonal Marking does MLS Cup Final!
"It was a good clash between two sides similar in ability but differing in strategy; Dallas played direct football with width, Colorado played narrower and passed the ball more in midfield. The most important zone of the pitch was the centre of midfield – which was actually quite a large zone, since the game was so stretched."

A bad way to crown champions
A Reuters MLS outsider's opinion of the MLS Cup.
"Call me a typical English soccer-snob but I still find the very idea of the game to be just wrong and ultimately self-defeating for the North American league."
Zonal Marking Analysis of LIverpool v. Chelsea
"Hodgson’s negative tactics have been met with a lot of criticism so far this season, but there is little doubt that his focus upon defending deep and maintaining a good shape is very handy when it comes to protecting leads against better sides. We would not be praising Liverpool’s shape but for two excellent Torres goals, though, and they were crucial in both the result and the overall pattern of play."
"I.14 C Stadium – Accommodation of visiting supporters
At least five per cent of the certified total stadium capacity must be made available for accommodating visiting supporters in a separate area.
This provision is subject to decisions by the competent bodies of the licensor and/or the local authority regarding safety and security (high-risk matches, etc.)." - Regulations: Club Licensing, FIFA. pg. 26If this is a FIFA regulation for club licensing is Seattle obligated to open over 1,500 seats to away supporters, not just 150. Portland and Whitecaps would have to open 5% of their stadium since they are FIFA licensed clubs. Why does the MLS seem to easily fall out of line with FIFA, and as the CBA negotiations went, FIFA seems unwilling to get involved in enforcing it's rules in MLS.
England taking notice of Steve Zakuani?
I don't know if this is more a compliment to Zakuani or simply the press expressing their grievance with the state of England's national team, but it is nice to see our players and league getting a mention from across the pond.
"The US federation are making moves to sign up Zakuani and he's also eligible to play for the Congo. After making a real splash in the States and with England lacking options up front, will Fabio Capello take a look at the MLS?"
World Cup Champion coach Tony DiCicco rips U.S. soccer development
"Our coaches at U-10 emphasize winning. You can win games and sacrifice player development and that’s what’s happening in our system."
Interesting interview with formal Women's National Team coach about youth development and US soccer.
Timbers sign first 4 players for MLS
"Portland announced the signing of forward Bright Dike and midfielder Ryan Pore, as well as goalkeeper Steve Cronin, from the USSF D-2 Portland Timbers, while also signing English forward Eddie Johnson away from the Austin Aztex."
Do you guys still think I'm crazy for not protecting Kasey Keller for the MLS Expansion Draft now?
Expansion Draft: Who would you protect? (AKA the Fucito Question)
Bumped to the FrontPage as it seems every week there is more and more expansion draft talk. Trust me, we'll hit you with a ton, but let's start the discussion now.
Anytime Fucito plays well, which apparently is just about every time he graces the pitch commenters on the interwebs express their fears and woes of him getting stolen in the expansion draft. I reckon it has something to do with the fresh wound that is Le Toux's success at Philadelphia this season, but he is undeniably leaving a mark in the hearts of Sounders fans. If you had it your way who would you protect for the expansion draft? Does the unique draft rules of having 2 teams picking players make a big difference? And aren't you dying to know my opinion?

US Director of Referee Develop stepping down
U.S. Soccer director of referee development Paul Tamberino informed his colleagues this week via email that he will resign effective Dec. 1.
I wonder what this will mean for US Soccer officiating. Something needs to change, hope this is for the better.

"The thing with playing for the Galaxy is every time we play a game it’s the other team’s biggest game of the year, whether we’re at home or whether we’re away" - Landon Donovan
For Bradley, vote of no confidence
Klinsmann's interview and Sunil Gulati's lack of response is really turning into a field day on Bob Bradley being only second best and issues on whether Gulati is and US Soccer is too inflexible.
Nice interview with Klinsmann about the USMNT and his talks about coaching the national squad that fell through.
