Canis Hoopus Discussion on Rubio's stats.

Not quite sure where the 4 pts and 2 assists is written down, but here are the numbers:

In ACB: 5.3/3.3/4.4
In Euroleague: 6.5/3.2/3.5

He is doing it in around 23 minutes per game.

Now, those numbers don't look impressive to most people, but we have to keep in mind that in Europe the pace is slower. Teams have around 70 possession per 40 minutes, that is like 84 possessions in the NBA, that is slower than the slowest team in the NBA. Regal Barcelona had around 66 possession per 40 minutes. If we adjust Rubio's numbers to 36 minutes and the average pace of 92.3 possessions we are getting:

ACB: 10.0/6.2/8.3
Euroleague: 12.3/6.1/6.6 (with 3.0 steals per 36 minutes)

Those numbers are very much alike the numbers of a younger Rajon Rondo. When Rondo was 22 in 2008 he had 12.7/5.0/6.1 with 2 steals per 36 minutes. And Rubio is still 1.5 year younger than Rondo at this time.

Additional to that Rubio posted a +2.9 per 100 possessions RAPM in the Euroleague, that is 11th best. Rondo had +1.1 per 100 possessions in 2008. So, Rubio's +/- stats showing him as someone who clearly has a positive impact on the game.

So, that's what we likely can expect Rubio to be. A Rondo from 2008 with better passing and free throw shooting.

P.S. In Europe assists aren't that easily to get as in the NBA. In the NBA an assist is also handed out when the receiving player makes a move, that is not going to happen in Europe. The defense on the perimeter is also tougher due to the shorter 3pt line. Rubio is shooting the ball better than Rondo which can be seen at his free throw numbers, but his field goal percentage is lower due to the fact that he has to take much more contested jump shots on the perimeter in comparison to close shots. It is a different kind of game, thus the stats will always look not that great to NBA fans.

There are many discussions about Rubio on realgm and the attack of the stats came up. This was a good response that I have not seen laid out. (Props to mysticbb)

Canis Hoopus OT: Tickets to the wolves/76ers game Feb 12th

This is incredibly OT and I am sorry if people are offended or see this as spam.

I coach basketball and my 13 yr old brother plays for a rival school. Neither of us have a game on Feb 12th and Iggy is his favorite player. I really want to take him to the game and get good seats. I am looking for any deals that anyone might know, or if someone is a season ticket holder that is not planning to go and would sell them at a discount. We were not able to go to a game this year or last year with our goofy schedules.

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Canis Hoopus NY Post claims Randolph deal in Place

NY Post claims

"Of the concerns team president Donnie Walsh has in breaking up the Knicks for Carmelo Anthony, one of them is having to use Anthony Randolph in a deal with the Timberwolves for a first-round pick, The Post has learned.

NY Post

Couple things of note...

1.) Consider the source. I am not saying it is not true, I am saying that the Post is known to exaggerate the completion of rumored deals.

2.) It cannot be our pick because of the Clipper situation. (If you owe a pick with protection, you cannot trade that pick until the protection is confirmed.) It must be the Utah or Memphis pick. The Post makes it seem like it is our pick.

Thoughts about the deal?

I also wonder if securing Randolph could spell a Pek+Wes for Vet Sg (Iggy?) deal?

Canis Hoopus Making sense of Kahn's roadtrip

"Timberwolves president David Kahn made a pit stop at United Center Tuesday night, stopping on his way back from Minnesota’s game in Boston Monday night and a meeting in New York Tuesday morning. Kahn said he hadn’t yet seen the Toronto Raptors in person this season, and the Wolves have Toronto at Target Center later this month."  /

Kahn's travels, Ridnour did not...

There has been some discussion about what this can mean. A view that has found popularity between MIN, TOR, and NY fans is this potential 3 way trade.

Toronto trades J. Bayless and Mia 1st---Receives Jonny Flynn

NY trades Anthony Randolph---Receives Mia 1st and Utah 1st

Min trades Jonny Flynn and Utah 1st--Receives Anthony Randolph and J. Bayless

Toronto does this because they were extremely high on Jonny Flynn prior to the draft. There has been discussion on a popular Toronto message board that they are still sniffing around for Jonny's availability. They want a fast lead pg that excels in the P/R game. Also, Jonny has the local angle growing up in nearby New York.

New York wants draft picks to exchange in a potential Melo deal. They are not using Randolph anyway. A respected NY moderator I spoke to says that they could see Walker+2nd (small incentive) included for Bassy in this type of deal but this is exactly the kind of deal they are looking for.

MN is able to bring in Randolph for relatively cheap, but Bayless is where things get interesting. He fits the role we were told Jonny Flynn could when he was drafted. Bayless is a bigger PG that works hard on defense is plays well off the ball. He would be the classic "3rd guard" behind Rubio. Bayless is not a pure pg, he is a combo guard, but I think he could work here.

Bayless highlights.

Canis Hoopus Love Letter from Rambis

I love how our front office, and now coach, write us love letters.

Dear Wolves fans,

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be the head coach of the Timberwolves. I want to thank Glen Taylor and David Kahn for giving me this opportunity.

As dedicated Wolves fans, you have been through some tough seasons recently. Nobody likes losing, especially me. But when I look at the players on this team now and how we are positioned for the upcoming seasons, I am truly optimistic that we have a bright future. There is some outstanding young talent on our team — talent that we can develop and nurture.

I look forward to building this young team into a playoff contender. I enjoy getting out on the floor with young players, instructing them and doing whatever it takes to help them improve. I’ve always been a big believer that extra time put in now will pay off in the future. So my coaching staff and myself will put in whatever time is necessary to make our players better.

In my many years as a player, I had to work hard and give an all-out effort to be effective. I will ask the same of my players. We will be an aggressive, hard-working, entertaining team. I believe we can develop an exciting brand of basketball that you will enjoy watching at Target Center.

I know it’s a new situation here with new faces on the roster and probably more changes to come. I look forward to providing an atmosphere where our players can thrive — an atmosphere where our core players can grow and new players feel welcome as they are blended into our system. And I hope to create, with your help, an energized atmosphere inside Target Center that will truly make it a fun place to be.

My family and I are excited about this new challenge and looking forward to settling in the Twin Cities. I hope to get a chance to meet and talk to many of you in the coming months.

Go Wolves,

Kurt Rambis
