So UNC with ALL of their players back from last year's final four team just destroyed #8 Notre Dame in the final of the Maui Invitational. Unless some sort of extreme circumstances arise, I don't see ANY team being able to hang with them all season. I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop a random game in conference to break up the perfect season, but I'd be GREATLY surprised if any team in the country can match up against them when it counts. It just seems unfair this season.

Finally a later kickoff. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting sick of leaving my house at 7am, arriving to the Rose Bowl by 8am, taking 30-45 minutes setting up 3 canopies, 2 LCD TV's, a satellite dish, a generator, 20 chairs, 3 tables, beer pong, and Rock Band, all to just tear everything down by 11am to go into the game. I'm looking forward to a nice leisurely tailgate on October 4!

Bumped. Congrats LMR. Keep it going. GO BRUINS. -N

I just saw the following status update on MySpace from Lorenzo Mata-Real:

Lorenzo Mata-Real made the Lakers Summer League team and is headed to Vegas today... Just Now.

Mood: confident

Congratulaions to LMR! Hopefully the Summer League will serve him well to showcase his Ben-Ball toughness. Though I'm not holding out a lot of hope of him suiting up in the purple and gold next season (simply for lack of space), I'd like to think that this league could provide the springboard he needs to make a roster in the NBA next season. GOOD LUCK!

UPDATE: Former Ben Ball warrior Cedric Bozeman also made the Lakers summer league team. Congrats Ced! GO BRUINS. -N

NCAA Basketball Recruiting Update: UCLA #1, Arizona and U$C Both Lose Key Commits

According to CBS College Sports, UCLA has secured the top recruiting class in the nation to date:

UCLA edges Kansas for the top spot as the spring recruiting period comes to an end, but the rankings aren't final yet.

As the spring signing period came to an end this week, the UCLA Bruins moved into the top spot in our recruiting rankings when 6-foot-10 post man J'Mison Morgan committed to the Bruins after being released from his national letter to LSU. He will give UCLA a solid replacement for All-American Kevin Love who has opted to enter the NBA draft next month. Love is expected to be a lottery pick. Morgan was the one piece that UCLA had to replace this spring to put them in line for another run at the national crown next winter.

Maybe even more interesting is the de-commits of two big recruits at other Pac-10 schools. First of all Arizona lost one of their top recruits, Emmanuel Negedu who is now considering Georgia Tech, Indiana, Memphis, and Tennessee. And it breaks my heart to report that Malik Story received his release on Tuesday from U$C:

30. USC 4 Recruits: Demar DeRozan 6-foot-5 Jr Compton (Calif.); Donte Smith 5-foot-11 PG Mt. San Antonio CC (Calif.); Percy Miller 6-foot PG Beverly Hills (Calif.); Leonard Washington 6-foot-6 CF Lake Charles Washington-Marion (La.). Note: Trojans dropped out of top 20 when Malik Story decided to go elsewhere this past week. Will others follow if Mayo situation worsens?

Hopefully this will set the stage for DeRozan to follow, leaving Timmeh with a useless PG/wannabe rapper that was only brought in to lure his buddy. Hahahahaha!

See the entire article, including the top 40 recruiting classes here.

So according to Jeff Goodman from Fox Sports, J'Mison Morgan will be freed of his commitment to LSU and should land at UCLA. This should complete our #1 recruiting class by helping to fill the void that K-Love will leave in the middle. Is it basketball season yet?

Sources told FOXSports.com that new LSU coach Trent Johnson plans to honor signee J'Mison Morgan's request and will release the senior big man from his letter-of-intent on Tuesday afternoon, effectively paving the way for Morgan to land at UCLA.

Larry Kehres for Head Coach

With the majority of the big-name head coaches seemingly being eliminated from our coaching search, I'd like to propose a long shot to succeed KD. Larry Kehres of Division III Mt Union College has established a program that is unparalleled in college football, even if it isn't at a D-I level.

"Under Kehres, the Raiders have won nine Division III National Championships in the last 14 years ('93, '96, '97, '98, '00, & '01, '02, '05, '06).

Since 1990, the Raiders have made 17 playoff appearances while posting college football's most wins and best winning percentage (230-10-1/.956). During the last 16 regular seasons, his teams have posted a phenomenal 162-2 (.988) overall mark."

Like I said, I know its not D-I but the guy obviously knows how to run a program and I don't think it would hurt to at least interview him. I was most impressed by the following:

"According to Kehres, a successful football program is built on organization and consistency.

"We have built a successful program, in part, because our coaching staff has remained intact and is committed to our system," he said. "We feel our program is well-organized. Our players know what is expected of them. They know that we believe in taking advantage of opportunities and not beating ourselves with mistakes.

"Offensively, we like to attack the defense and make them cover the whole field. Defensively, we want to create big plays. As for the kicking game, I believe in being aggressive and winning the field position battle. Being consistent in all three phases and being well-conditioned puts you in a position to win games in the fourth quarter."

This sounds like exactly what we are looking for and he just may be the diamond in the rough UCLA needs if its not going to pay to get a high profile guy.

The whole article can be read here:
http://www.muc.edu/athletics/men_s_teams/football/head_coach_larry_kehres__1

What better way to start out Beat $uC week than with a dig at their pathetic excuse for a basketball program? TrOJan thugs and starters OJ Mayo (aka, The Jaw Breaker) and Taj Gibson were both held out of the starting lineup tonight in their basketball game against #18 Southern Illinois. The sports information director from U$C tried to claim that Tim Floyd held the two starters out in order to better match up with the Southern Illinois University Salukis. Apparently, SIU provides such a huge matchup problem for the TrOJies that Tim Floyd had to pull two of his best players out of the starting lineup? YEAH RIGHT! Both players entered the game with 13:32 remaining in the first half and the Trojans trailing by a few points. Steve Lavin is announcing the game and called BS on that one. You don't hold out two guys averaging a combined 36 ppg for "matchup reasons". He has been inferring that the two players violated team rules throughout the entire first half. You'd think the SID at $uC could come up with a little better story than "matchup problems"! Seriously, who the heck is really going to believe that anyway? Go figure, another Trojan named OJ couldn't follow the rules! Hahahahahaha!
