HAPPY MATT MOORE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me Matt Moore makes his AAA debut tonight in Durham, and it will be on MiLB.com. For those of you that don't have a subscription, WHAT'S STOPPING YOU!?!?! Pretty much all the Triple-A games are on there, so you can see the rest of Moore's starts as well as Jennings and Guyer from now until eternity.

"We've spent a lot of time and energy on it and will continue to do so, and obviously there are a lot of variables at play," executive vice president Andrew Friedman said Friday. "But I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll be able to line up on something that helps us in 2011 and gets in front of one of our to-do items this offseason."

Tampa Bay Rays more likely to take buyers stance as trade deadline approaches Marc Tomkin gets some interesting, yet always cryptic, quotes from Friedman about their strategy for the coming trade deadline.

Prospect of the Day: Matt Moore, LHP, Tampa Bay Rays

1

John Sickles profiles the Rays left-hander. Money quote: "Tampa Bay left-hander Matthew Moore turned heads in the 2011 MLB Futures Game Sunday night, posting an impressive inning of work against the World Team, showing a 98 MPH moving fastball that put scouts in a state of ecstatic communion with the baseball gods. I had Moore as a Grade A prospect pre-season, and the Number Four pitching prospect in baseball; if anything, his stock has risen."

**Keeping with the bloodline theme, Tampa Bay Rays prospect Cameron Seitzer is off to a fine start in the Appalachian League, hitting .360/.467/.540 in 15 games for Princeton, with nine walks and 15 strikeouts. He's stolen three bases in three attempts. Drafted in the 11th round this year from the University of Oklahoma, Cameron is a very polished hitter with a good feel for the strike zone, as you might expect from Kevin Seitzer's son. He's a big guy at 6-5, 225, but he has a short, compact line drive swing. Indeed, scouts weren't sure if he would hit for enough power to play first base in pro ball, which is why he lasted until the 11th round. College guys tearing up the Appy League are not unusual, so it is wait-and-see here, but at least the early returns are positive.

Matt Moore Carries a no-no through 6 2/3

6

Moore pitches another gem trying for his second no-no on the year. Ended up going 7 IP with 1 R, 1 BB, 1 H, and 10 ks. He's destroying the SL. On the year: 17 GS, 96 2/3 IP, 2.14 ERA/2.5 FIP, 125 Ks, 61 H, 26 BB. He's got more strikeouts on the year than he has allowed baserunners. INSANE.

**Tampa Bay Rays shortstop prospect Hak-Ju Lee continues his strong campaign for High-A Charlotte in the Florida State League, hitting .304 in his last 10 games and posting a .339/.412/.468 line overall, with 26 walks and 41 strikeouts in 233 at-bats. He's also stolen 20 bases in 28 attempts. Although he hasn't maintained the power surge he showed in April (he slugged .686 that month), he continues lashing liners to all fields and is generally impressing everyone who sees him.

John Sickles, minorleagueball.com Lee getting more good pub. I imagine he'll be flying up the prospect rankings and be in most everyone's top 50. /nobody reads fanshots

Rays Sign Two More Sandwich Picks

33

Jeff Ames and James Harris sign below slot deals. Good to see more guys signed early. The Rays have now signed 5 of their 12 picks in the first 2 rounds. ETA: Hager also appears to have signed for $900k (h/t RJ). Also edit out me being a nincompoop.

The Rays' defensive efficiency (DER) sits at .735 right now. For those of you that don't know, this is essentially the defensive end of BABIP (or 1-BABIP). That means that our defensive BABIP is .265. To put that in to context, no team has had a team defensive BABIP below .270 since the Mariners notched a .269 in 2003. No team has bested our current pace since the Mariners posted a .260 in 2001 (when they set the record for regular season wins). So the Rays' defense/pitching is either really phenomenal or getting lucky (or both). Knowing what we know (that the Rays have been top 3 in this regard the past 3 seasons and have improved defensively at short and first), I tend to think that we could be seeing an all-time great defense.

me h/t to Reej for pointing out our defensive efficiency
