Jayson, what if the Phillies and Braves end up in a tie and both nab playoff spots. Who is the division winner and who gets the wild card?

That would be determined by the season series. And right now, the Braves lead that with six games to go. So that's an interesting little subplot as they head toward the finish.

If you had to pick today, gut feeling, first thought...Who wins the World Series?

My gut feeling right now? I like Rays over Braves.

Rays & Braves? Wow, how bad would the ratings be for THAT? Selig would cancel the WS.

You know what? I could care less what the ratings would be. This isn't American Idol. You can't vote for which teams you'd like to see provide the biggest-rated World Series. I think that would be a fun World Series, personally. The Rays are as fun to watch as any team in baseball. The Braves have something magical going. It's the Rays' last chance to win before Carl Crawford exits. It's the Braves' last chance to win one for Bobby Cox. I'll take those plot lines, even if the Neilsen people won't.

The Tigers acquired Brandon Jones from the Pirates for a player to be named later, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. Detroit assigned the minor league veteran to AA Erie, so he won't be an immediate addition to the Tigers' injury-depleted lineup.

Oh what could have been.

Talking Chop The "Braves" no more?

A Landmark State Law

Ag0vaw4ga__medium

For the first time in the history of our country, a state-wide law has been passed allowing the ban of race-based logos and mascots from sports teams.  The state is Wisconsin, and the law has been brewing for some 30 years.  In it, people may submit formal complaints to the state.  If the complaint holds up, the offending school could face fines of up to $1,000 a day for continued use.

Read more about the law here.

What does this have to do with my Braves?

The National Congress of American Indians last challenged the use of Native American mascots 42 years ago. The use of Native American names and images are still widely used by high schools and colleges for sports teams. And then there are the professional teams; the Blackhawks, Indians, Redskins, Chiefs and of course, our beloved Braves among others.

Per the article, some think this law has ramifications beyond precedent:

For decades, Native American civil rights groups have called on these teams to change their names. They've had little success. But Dave Czesniuk, of the Boston-based group Sport in Society, thinks the Wisconsin law may turn out to be a game-changer.

"I think what's going on in Wisconsin is exciting, and it's a true sign of real change," he says. "You know, social responsibility is on the rise, even in the ranks of professional sports and the corporate level."

Czesniuk says attitudes have changed since the 1970s, when an estimated 3,000 schools and colleges had Indian mascots. He says the key to making the case is teaching team officials and fans how they perpetuate stereotypes and hurt some Native Americans.

The argument, and in my opinion the case with the Atlanta Braves is that we are in fact honoring the tradition and heritage of "braves" rather than demeaning and harming a race of peoples.  But what does a white guy from Alabama know about that?

The Blackskins

Here's a litmus test for racial sensitivity and it's usage: swap out the race. How long would the Washington Blackskins last? Our history is rich with failure in regards to racial equality, but with each generation prejudice and memories fade into history.  Have we as a country made amends to the Native Americans?  Probably not, but is this how we do it?  Generically re-branding sports teams?

Note: please discuss, but I urge you to offer the same respect and consideration that you desire and expect to receive.

The third shock of the Top 10 came with Atlanta’s selection of Vanderbilt lefty Mike Minor, an advanced arm with limited upside.

Just over 11 months have passed since the ‘09 draft, so let’s have a look and see how the gambles are paying off.

The Braves organization has a reputation for developing pitchers but the club historically takes prep arms. That hasn't worked out so well in recent years, which could explain part of the rationale for taking Minor, 22. He had a rough start to his '10 season with nine runs allowed in his first two starts (9.0 innings) but he's been making the organization look smart lately. The "soft-tosser" is leading the double-A Southern League in strikeouts with 65 in 44.2 innings of work (13.24 K/9). He's also given up just 32 hits. Minor may find even more success once he can get the ball down a little more consistently and get the ground-ball rate up over that 50% hump. The southpaw has been lights-out with the bases empty (.132 average) but he's struggled with runners on and in scoring position (.320).

Escobar out to improve on and off field

Looks like everyone's favorite enigma will be flying solo for interviews come midseason.

"While speaking about his desire to finally learn English this year, he added that he's always wanted to be a public person -- one who can not just communicate with an English-speaking media, but also get to a point where he can appear in English commercials that can maybe help him gain endorsements and more face time.

Since arriving in the Majors in 2007, though, that exposure hasn't really been there. In order to try to bridge the gap, Escobar said he's been doing his best to watch as much English TV as possible and has been constantly listening to CDs that teach him the language."

Any guesses on Yunel's favorite TV show? Jersey Shore or maybe This Old House?

Strellis_389987l

Man attacks TVs in Lilburn Walmart after learning, albeit a tad late, that the Atlanta Braves have traded long time second baseman Kelly Johnson.

"Just after noon Wednesday, Westley Strellis, 23, of Lawrenceville, walked into the Walmart on Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn.

After grabbing a metal baseball bat from the sporting goods section, he walked to the electronics department and destroyed the TVs on display.

He was arrested not long after. Witnesses say he was heard yelling the name 'Prado! Prado! while being taken into custody."

Ok, maybe the Johnson part I made up.

SEC breakout players for 2010

1. Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus: Several in and around Alabama’s program think Dareus will be the next great defensive lineman for the Crimson Tide. He certainly made his presence felt in the BCS National Championship Game in January when he was named the game’s Defensive MVP after returning an interception 28 yards for a touchdown and knocking Texas quarterback Colt McCoy out of the game. Dareus only started in four games last season, but he still wound up with 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Look for those numbers to soar in 2010, and look for him to emerge as one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the league.

Chris Low breaks down his picks for the SEC breakout players for 2010.

Dareus is turning out to be a real gem of his class. We can concede that we might lose him after next season, but as Saban continues to reload big uglies on the D-Line, good things will continue in T(itle)-Town.

Alabama players accounted for all of the South's points. Robinson hit tight end Colin Peek for a 19-yard touchdown and Leigh Tiffin booted field goals of 43 and 33 yards.

Cincy's Gilyard has 103 yards receiving, TD; Florida's Tebow shaky

SOUTH 13, NORTH 31

Big disappointment that Upchurch got ZERO carries. Javy was limited in returning except for a play that was called back via penalty. The deal with the NFL network has really taken the luster off this game.

On a positive note, Peek looks to be a great TE prospect. I will always wonder what could have been had we retained his services for more than a single season.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Kentucky coach Rich Brooks told his Wildcats that he's probably not returning next season after a 21-13 loss to Clemson on Sunday night in the Music City Bowl.

Brooks said at the postgame news conference that he's "80 percent" sure he's not coming back. He plans to think about his next move, talk with his family and make a final decision within the week.

The 68-year-old coach finished his seventh season at Kentucky with a 7-6 record and 39-47 overall mark with the Wildcats. If it was his final game, his career coaching record in college will be 130-156-4 in 25 seasons, including 18 at Oregon.

Last January, Kentucky announced that offensive coordinator Joker Phillips will take over as head coach when Brooks steps down.

"I think it may be time for a change and time for Joker to take over," Brooks said. "Not totally sure. I just felt like maybe it's time."

Brooks said he had been thinking about calling it a career over the past week, but stayed busy with preparations for the bowl game. Kentucky made school history by reaching a fourth straight bowl game, but snapped a three-game winning streak with the loss.

"The legacy of Alabama football certainly had a void filled,"

"That's what I was concerned about tonight," Saban said. "Maybe by playing all those guys we didn't help Mark in terms of getting what he may very well have deserved, because he shared the burden."

"In some of the spread offenses it's a little bit more difficult to be a dominant runner," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "In old-fashioned ball, running backs were held in high esteem."

"We felt like we were getting one of the best running backs in the country," Saban said. "Mark's success is no surprise at all. He's a great competitor, a great person and he has tremendous ability."

Coming on the heels of Bama's 73-65 home loss to #5 Purdue. I'm liking this coach the more I hear from him. Perhaps we'll have a little excitement in the off season after all.

Roll 'Bama Roll Record Logjam in the BCS Standings

Looking at Week 12's BCS Standings I was surprised to see no less than 6 teams able to tout an undefeated record.  I thought this can't be common so I took a look back at previous Week 12 standings since '02.

Here's what I found:

YearUndefeatedsTeams (Rank)
2009 6 Florida (1), Alabama (2), Texas (3), TCU (4), Cincinnati (5), Boise State (6)
2008 5 Alabama (1), Texas Tech (2), Utah (7), Boise State (9), Ball State (14)
2007 2 Kansas (3), Hawaii (16)
2006 4 Ohio State (1), Michigan (2), Rutgers (7), Boise State (13)
2005 2 USC (1), Texas (2)
2004 5 USC (1), Oklahoma (2), Barners (2), Utah (5), Boise State (13)
2003 2 Oklahoma (1), TCU (10)
2002 2 Miami (1), Ohio State (2)

The likely expectation here is that 4 of this season's undefeated teams will remain undefeated right up until the 'bowl selection' week of the BCS. Such a jam would match only 2004's Auburn and Utah getting left at the alter.

Boise State has been undefeated at this point 4 of the last 8 seasons - but this year marks their highest BSC ranking save for the rankings after the win over Oklahoma in '04.  Even so, they're not even sniffing distance from the BSC title invite, what do the Broncos do?  If they had beaten Oregon last week instead of the beginning of the season what would that mean for their ranking?

RTR beat the Mocs!

What we thought we knew: Alabama had too much to replace.
What we know: The Crimson Tide might be the best team in the country.

After losing its last two games in 2008, Alabama entered this season with plenty of concerns. The Crimson Tide lost three starting offensive linemen, including All-America left tackle Andre Smith, along with quarterback John Parker Wilson and leading rusher Glen Coffee.

But through three games, the Crimson Tide look like the team to beat in the SEC West. Quarterback Greg McElroy has been fantastic, and Alabama has four tailbacks -- Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, Roy Upchurch and Terry Grant -- who would start for a lot of teams. The offensive line has held up pretty well, and Alabama's defense might be the best in the country.

Alabama also has the easiest road among the SEC West contenders. It plays at No. 4 Ole Miss on Oct. 10, but gets No. 7 LSU at home Nov. 7. The Tide do not play Florida or Georgia, the two best teams in the SEC East.

It just felt like a low blow ... If he had a problem with me or anything like that, you'd think he'd tell it to my face. I had plenty of opportunity to talk while I was wearing that uniform. It just was like, all right, now that I'm wearing another one, why would he come out and say that?

ESPN - Church upset with Manuel comments

After Mets third baseman David Wright was hit in the head by a 94 mph fastball last weekend, causing a concussion, Manuel said Wright was a "different animal" than Church, who missed much of last season with New York following a pair of concussions.

"From the outside looking in, the smartest thing to do obviously was to go on [the DL]. But for me, I was trying to just get back and play. I mean, they were telling me if I would have went out there and got another one, my career would have been over. And that didn't really sink in. And it wasn't like anybody was telling me, no, don't do it, go on the DL," Church said.

Looking back now, he knows it was unwise.

Roll 'Bama Roll Alabama's 2009 Quarterback

Edit: Added high school stats to the table (where available), removed Fanuzzi.

Let me first apologize if this has been bludgeoned to death already, but I haven't seen it.

With all of the turmoil (love it!) in the plains due to a little quarterback controversy earlier this season, I've often wondered about the Tide's direction for next year.  Just to state the obvious, we're going to be losing a solidly consistent (finally) senior quarterback who has been an outstanding game manager, committing few if any big errors this season.  He hasn't been a game changer, but that's not what we have needed this year.

So for 2009, where do we go?  Below is our probable 2009 quarterback corps:

#NamePosYrGames P-Yards TD INT PASS COMP R-YARDS
19A Ross Applegate QB SO 0 960 7 NA NA NA NA
16A Thomas Darrah QB SO 0 2,870 23 11 355 220 NA
13A Robert Ezell QB FR 0 NA NA NA NA NA NA
2 Star Jackson QB FR 0 1894 11   202 116 224
12 Greg McElroy QB SO 2 4687 56 9 450 321 700+
10 Morgan Ogilvie QB FR 0 1121 9 5 128 80 -9
? A.J. McCarron QB REC 0 2532 26 3 232 145 NA

Obviously, the current notables here are McElroy, Jackson, Fanuzzi, and possibly Darrah.  Last but not least, incoming true freshman A.J. McCarron.

Granted, we haven't had enough 'free' game clock where Saban could throw these guys out there for experience, nor would he want to burn certain red shirts for players like Jackson.  But as far as I know, McElroy is the only available quarterback who could start next year that has seen any game time.

So the questions are thus:  With what little we know about our quarterback options for 2009, who is the starter? What is the depth chart?  Is Jackson a play-maker but also prone to error, or do we stick with a JPW-like 'game manager' in McElroy until one of the freshman steps up?

Roll 'Bama Roll Number Whipping: Defensive Ranks

ed. - bumped from the fanposts. stat wonks what!

NJBammer's article Rushing D, Scoring D got me thinking.  And please don't bust my berries over how I spend my lunch break!

There might be a statistic formed here called "defensive effectiveness" which, quite obviously states how dependent, or rather, how much of your success is dependent on your rush defense.

As suggested by NJBammer, I took a look at both Rushing TDs and Rushing Yards Per Game, sorted and ranked both, averaged the ranks, and compared them to BCS standings.

Dd_medium

via www.automotivesys.com

Legend:

BCS - BCS Rankings
TD/YPG - Average of "Rushing TDs Allowed on Defense (Rank)" and "Rushing Yards Per Game (Rank)"
D.E. - Defensive Effectiveness
D.E.R. - Rank of Defensive Effectiveness

The way I interpret this stat is that it basically says "how much of a role has your relative defense strength played into your success this season".  For a team like Florida State, their defense has been nearly the entire reason for their current success.  FSU's defensive statistic rankings greatly outweigh their offensive statistic rankings.  On the other hand, a team like Oklahoma with a -42.5 D.E., meaning their poor defensive rankings relative to their high overall ranking shows us that their offense has been their reason for their success thus far.

Ideally I think the closer to '0' D.E. you are, the better.  This would indicate a rushing defense that is as strong as the rest of your team.
