There were too many meetings run by executives in Arlington, Va., too many "news" initiatives dictated from afar that detracted from news needs on the ground here. And in the end, there were too few of my colleagues left in the building, too many gifted people with productive years left being spun back into the community instead of staying where they belonged, inside that building to cover it.

Ft. Wayne News-Sentinel wants IU-UofL

"Let's keep this simple in the wake of the Indiana-Kentucky mutual basketball debacle and reports IU-Louisville already is DOA: "IU should set up a long-term home-and-home series with Louisville, ASAP. "Kansas is nice, but the Hoosiers can do better than nice." Article ends with a nice zinger aimed at Calipari. (Hint: bawk, bawk, bawk)

Louisville's Unconventional Approach to Success (NYT)

"...interesting to go back and take a look at what Cardinals Coach Rick Pitino said about our analysis before the season began, because he had a different opinion than any of the other coaches surveyed on what statistics are most significant to winning."

Nice Yahoo write-up on Pitino & Donovan

"Twenty-five years after Providence Final Four run, the Donovan-Pitino bond is stronger than ever." (Article pre-dates Sweet Sixteen games, but anticipates the possibility of the two meting in the Elite Eight)

USF Quarterback day-to-day

I know what the detractors would say: U of L playing in a BCS bowl game would be a farce. Well, this is the farce that college football has foisted upon us. You know what they call the guy who graduates last in his med school class? "Doctor." You know what they call the BCS team from the Big East? A BCS team.

Cardinal Dominance: DaMarcus Smith enrolling at UofL in January

"Cardinal Dominance sources reveal that Smith has been finishing up his two final classes that he needed to be eligible, with his finals to be completed soon, and he has great grades in both classes. Sources state that Smith has spoken with HC Charlie Strong, and from both Smith and Louisville's end, it is all good." Good news is always welcome in bad times....

Kragthorpe: the gift that keeps on giving

The decline of Louisville football under Steve Kragthorpe may have cost the Cardinals a chance to join the Big 12. The following is from a column in the Austin American-Statesman: Two high-level Big 12 school administrators said on Sunday the conference expects Missouri to leave and will act quickly to replace the Tigers, focusing primarily on West Virginia with Louisville as a strong second candidate. "I think that’s accurate," one school official told the American-Statesman. "I’d say West Virginia is the leader in the clubhouse. I think we’ll come out better than before. I’d rather be with someone who wants to be with our conference than anybody who doesn’t." Asked why the Big 12 would be upgraded, the official said, "West Virginia has better football than Missouri, better basketball than Missouri, a better budget than Missouri and more passion among its fans than Missouri. They’re better, anyway you turn ‘em. The travel’s not good (to Morgantown, W. Va) but that’s it." He added there is support for Louisville, but said a lagging football program hurts its appeal. Thanks for everything, Steve.

Ran into Pitino at Molly's St Matthews earlier this afternoon and I asked him about the whole Big East/Big 12 conference thing. He said "I am a Big East guy...BUT if Missouri goes then we are DEFINITELY leaving for the Big 12". I followed up with where is that coming from... and as he shook my hand and looked me in the eyes he said "that's coming from me, trust me, bank on it!". As he walked away he looked back at me and said "but the key is Missouri leaving".

Air Force was approached by Big 12, said no

"We were approached by the Big 12, and I told them we're not a good fit for that conference. In the Big 12, geography makes sense, the economics make sense, but recruiting makes no sense for us. I can't recruit against Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State," Mueh said. "That's why I turned down the Big 12. I can't do that to my kids, because they'll get beat up. I'd love the extra $12 million or whatever it would be per year from the TV money. And I know how I'd spend the money. I'd build a new soccer stadium, and I'd build a new baseball facility, all in one year. But I can't do that."

Eric Crawford | Wildcats are out of their league in SEC

Cheer up, Wildcats. Everybody has a bad day - it just happens that yours is Saturday.

Mark Story: It's time for Kentucky to consider changing conferences

"If UK is committed to winning in football," Story writes, "isn't it time to at least think about finding a different league in which to play? "Southeastern Conference football is the gold standard. It features big-time stadiums, massive fan bases and, collectively, the best players on display this side of the NFL. "The problem for Kentucky is that playing in the mac daddy of college football leagues, UK hasn't had a winning record in SEC games since 1977." Maybe we could arrange a trade: Kentucky to the Big East, Louisville to the SEC. Seriously, though, if Kentucky were to leave the SEC, that would create a huge opening for the Cards to move in. We'd mop up in basketball, and be much more competitive in football than the Cats have ever been. I know, it's a pipe dream. But hey, it's bye week and I'm bored.
