This is an old post John made around this time into the season 2 years ago. It got bumped up on my BFTB side panel so I decided to check it out. It's surprising to look back at the draft class from '07 and '08, and see how things turned out. Most of those guys were called stretches, yet 2 of the 6 guys are now starters and 2 more are nearly there. (Missing from John's list is Paul Oliver,a supplemental draft pick)

I also found it interesting to see how things turned out in positions that were not drafted for in 2008. One thing that John mentioned about the DLine struck me:
"After spending high draft picks on Castillo and Olshansky, what made AJ think he could find a backup DT off the scrap heap?"
He didn't just find back-ups, he found starters. I don't know how AJ does it, but that old article really puts things in perspective.

I think this picture clearly demonstrates why Sproles didn't and would not have scored on the most debated play of the game. Yes, Hardwick missed his block. Vasquez wasn't doing much either and Dielman seems to be tied up.
More importantly though, there are 4 defenders to be blocked by 3 unoccupied blockers. These numbers don't stack up well. In addition to this, all 4 defenders are outside of the endzone which indicates there weren't too far back waiting on playaction (two of them are moving forward).
Barring an exceptional spin move in the hole, which we didn't see at all in this game, Sproles was going to have a ton of trouble reaching the endzone even if Hardwick picks up his block.

This sets the bar for what a top tier LT should expect to get paid in the current NFL environment. McNeill must be licking his chops.

Bolts From The Blue Manning is the MVP Again

Is anybody even slightly surprised? I figured the vote wouldn't be so close to unanimous, I thought Brees would have gotten more votes the way he's been hyped in the media these last few weeks. But hey, at least PR got more votes than BF. That's a moral victory, right? What about CJ getting snuffed in the voting? 2000 yards is crazy on its own. Does he automatically get Offensive player of the year now, I'm thinking that he is the guy to pick. It looks like Woodson is gonna get the Defensive honors. What do you guys think?

Bolts From The Blue Overturned TD for Raiders

What do you guys think? Did the refs make the right call? At least half of the NFL nation thinks otherwise, even bringing in the Ben Watson TD from earlier in the night to argue that the Raiders should have gotten credit for a TD. In the third camera angle, the one they showed after halftime, I thought it was pretty clear that the ball came out and touched the ground. The rule has been clarified on the NFL site, http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/09/15/explanation-of-overturned-td-by-murphy/ . The confirmed that the call made by the booth was correct. What do you think?

Bolts From The Blue Who is the Best Team in the AFC?

All I hear in Canada is that the Pats are the best team right now. TSN, the Canadian ESPN, has the Pats as the #1 team in the NFL. But with the losses to the defense like losing Seymour, I think the Steelers are still the team to beat. They have gotten better on special teams with the addition of the CFL export Stephan Logan on their kick and punt returns. I don't know if the Chargers are as rounded as the Steelers; they sure haven't gotten worse this year. So, then, who is the AFC team to beat?
