Too bad for Travis Henry but great news for Selvin Young as he should be seen as the man in Denver after joining the team as an undrafted free agent last year and having a solid rookie season. I have to admit I don't follow the Broncos all too closely, is there another running back in the pipeline or recently signed that I'm not thinking about?

On another note, I and a few others were a little upset with the Titans when they let go of Travis Henry in favor of LenDale White. He had a great season during VY's rookie campaign while Thunder was only so-so at best. I thought it was a bone headed move but maybe we should give them credit for seeing attitude problems even back then.

Daniel Gibson is out of Cleveland's line up as a result of a seperated shoulder. It's too bad for both he and the Cavs as he was a bright spot for the team in last year's Finals run. It looks like they'll need some magic to keep from being eliminated by the Celtics on Friday. On a side note, does LeBron always refer to himself in the third person?

"Tennessee students wanting to see the Volunteers play will have to pay beginning this fall."

No this isn't for volleyball games, this is a new policy for football. Wow, are you kidding me?! I had no idea that Tennessee had never charged students for football tickets before. Do they not have a business school in Rocky Top? Can you imagine what that would be like in Austin?! Every student and jackass with an old student ID (guilty here) would step over whoever they needed to get in the stadium. Their season ticket price is still cheaper as we have to pay for the Longhorn Sports Package and then can purchase a season ticket. Not the case in Knoxville. Makes me wonder how they do it with other sports.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/s...

Yes it's Saturday but the Horns are off so I figured a little basketball was ok. Kevin Durant is already having an impact in the NBA with his Buzzer Beater 3 in Double Overtime to life Seatle over the Atlanta Hawks last night. Here's the article

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/7...

Rethinking the BCS strategy

I just wanted to post my thoughts somewhere and see what people smarter than me have to say. After seeing that Kansas and Missouri continue to roll, I'm having second thoughts about exactly what to hope for in order for the Horns to get a BCS bid. Until now, the discussion has centered around hoping that Kansas and Missouri stumble somewhere and then lose to OU and hope that BCS bowls will choose a 2-loss Texas team over the others. Here are my thoughts on this:

Kansas is looking pretty darn good. Sure, they haven't played anybody with less than 4 losses, but they've looked impressive in the games they have won. With only two games left (Iowa State and Missouri), I see Kansas potentially only losing 1, which would make them a 1 loss team at the end of the regular season.

Missouri has also looked impressive and has only lost to OU, a team that we lost to as well. They take on K-State next and can beat a team we were embarrassed at home by. Seeing as how K-State was throttled by a terrible Nebraska team, this is very possible.

OU has two more teams to play as well, Tech and OSU, and conventional thinking has been that we cheer for them to win out and roll on in the Championship.

So now we get to the possible end of the season, post Big 12 Championship scenarios.

Kansas beats Missouri and goes on to play OU while being undefeated. Missouri becomes a two loss team with a resume that is potentially better than Texas'. If Kansas were to go on to beat Missouri, then an undefeated Kansas team would go the National Championship and a two-loss OU team would probably be selected over a two-loss Texas team. This much is known already. However, if Kansas lost and OU rolled on, Kansas would only be a 1 loss team with that loss being to a potential national title contender and a team that beat us. To get an at large nod over Kansas, we would have to bank our hopes on Bowl officials recognizing our fan base and economic might as a "burnt orange nation". But I'm starting to believe that would be very difficult to do given how impressive Kansas has looked.

Missouri defeats Kansas making the Jayhawks a 1 loss team. Again if Missouri wins, we're out because a two loss OU gets in before us. If Missouri loses, they're a two loss team but Kansas is STILL a 1 loss team. Would BCS Bowls really ignore this? Why wouldn't they argue they are more deserving of an at large spot? Why wouldn't Missouri get an at large spot because they lost to the same team twice, with OU being a potential National Title contender?

Given the weak games coming up for both Missouri and Kansas before their big showdown, I don't see stumbling happening for either team. We then get into a very stick predicament where we are just praying that bowl officials pick us over two other teams that have just as strong a case as we do. All this is true IF OU goes on to win out.

My point is this, maybe we should be sticking to our guns and follow through on our year after year hope that OU crashes and burns and proves to the rest of the country that they suck as much as we know they do. If OU stumbles against either Tech or OSU (which I think is much more likely than Kansas or Missouri stumbling), but not both, they go on to the Big 12 Championship as a two loss team. If they lose that game then they become a 3 loss team and would be out of the BCS picture. If the team they lose to is Missouri, then there's STILL a 1 loss Kansas team out there for us to contend with and I think they get selected over us because they loss to a Missouri team that may be going on the National Championship.

Here is what I will be hoping for then. I'm hoping for Kansas to roll on and win out and for OU to stumble somewhere before the Big 12 Championship. If this happens, then we only have to contend with a two loss Missouri for an at large spot. In my opinion, if things don't unfold this way then its a long shot we get into a BCS game and we'll be completely resting our hopes on BCS bowls ignoring the resumes of Missouri and Kansas and picking us purely on our fan base. And to be honest, even if this did happen, as a fan of college football I'm not sure how I would personally feel abot seeing economics winning over performance.

I'm pretty confident there will be a much larger discussion of all this spurred on by PB and company, but I've been thinking about this since the end of the Kansas game last night and just needed to get my thoughts out somewhere. Thanks a lot if you made it this far, now what are your thoughts?

No probably not, but here's a neat LA Times article discussing all the possibilities (from the more likely to the downright crazy) that bowl officials are grappling with. Of course we do still have to win out to even be considered, but hey its fun to dream...

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-...

The Longhorns are well represented in Ivan Maisel's list of "The 100" which counts down the top 100 plays, performances and moments that define college football. Included in the top 20 are:

#14 - Tommy Nobis' 4th and 1 goal line stand against Joe Namath and Alabama in the 1965 Sugar Bowl

#9 - James Street's 44 yard pass on 4th and 3 that would lead to a win over Arkansas and a National Championship in 1969

#5 - Vince Young's 928 sneak on 4th and 5 to defeat USC for the 2005 National Championship

I bet every generation thought they had seen the best there would ever be but the Texas Longhorns are a special and historic team for a reason. I have hope that the best is yet to come still...

Just saw this a couple minutes ago. There's so much that went into this decision it could take a while to get through it all, but you have to think Astro's front office has a lot to do with this. First losing Andy, which probably affected Roger's decision, now this. We all know about the Texan's management debacles, and now the Rockets seem to be in a pit as well. Are Houston teams just cursed with poor management?

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6782442?MSNHPHMA

I was fortunate enough to attend the Academic Awards Banquet for male athletes last night in the Erwin Center. First off, congrats to all the young men who recieved awards last night. It's not easy to be a great student and a great athlete. But I wanted to especially bring attention to the presence of Michael Griffin. Despite his exciting weekend and all the promise of his future career, he still boarded a plane Sunday evening to be able to be in Austin for this ceremony. The football team had several athletes receiving academic awards so the crowd was holding applause as each name was called out. This wasn't the case with Michael Griffin. He got quite the applause from the crowd in appreciation of his continued academic dedication.

If this doesn't show strong character I don't know what does. Even though he and his family are set financially for a long time to come, he still values his education and (at least I'm inferring) his experience at the University of Texas. This is a huge reflection on his own character but also his family and even the coaching staff and the athletics department support staff.

Again, congrats to all the recipients but a special congrats to Michael Griffin.
