...and other entertaining comps from Grant Brisbee. This of course is in reaction to BP releasing PECOTA today. Other than humor, it seems the point of Brisbee's article is to show that the PECOTA comps are not always perfect and/or reasonable, which made me feel much better after seeing that Santana is either John Mayberry, Joe Torre, or Chris Iannetta.
Fan Survey Request from the Cleveland Indians
On Tuesday, I received an email from the Cleveland Indians asking to participate in a survey. As an investment professional, I get these requests from publications all the time, usually with the promise to enter me into a "contest" for an AmEx gift card. Other times, I'm lucky enough to actually receive a $50 Amazon.com credit, or a token $5 Starbucks card.
But this was not from another industry publication... this was from MY Cleveland Indians. While the length was estimated to take 30-35 minutes, the reward of two free tickets to a 2012 home game and my interest in the team and ballpark experience was more than enough for me to jump in. Within the first 5 minutes, this statement came up with various "agree/disagree" options...
Jim Thome to address the Cleveland City Club live at 12:30 p.m., 10/24/11
Streaming online courtesy of WCPN 90.3 FM's Ideastream.
Moderating will be Tom Hamilton. I imagine Jim should have about 3 minutes left to speak by the time Hammy's introduction concludes.
ITS TIME!!!!
I'm Coming Cleveland!!
could be something, could be nothing. but he's excited nonetheless.
[UPDATE: Added the additional tweet - Ryan]
[UPDATE: It's official. Jordan Bastian tweets that Valbuena was optioned down to Columbus, and Goedert was DFAd to make room for Kipnis on the 40-man roster - Ryan]

Trey Haley is a major league pitcher.
It's a pay article, but all of the Indians are available without subscription.
From this, the more that our offense needs band-aids, the more I think Antonetti might be willing to part with a bullpen arm if the guy is over-valued enough by a trade partner.
I don't think I could give a fair description of this, but the look on Wedge's face provides a 10,000-word narrative with one simple look.
Apologies if this appeared in a game thread somewhere this weekend.
And of course, he was DFA'd today.
Brought to you by ...
anyone willing to pony up the cash.
I love that Baseball-Reference's fundraising consists of allowing sponsorship of individual player pages, so much that I'll spend 5x as much time on the website as I planned on after only going there to find out Vinny Pestano's BABIP vs. lefties (it's .167). Spurred on by divisional SBN rival Royals Review's post, I thought I'd run down the list of players making an appearance thus far in 2011.
Speaking of Vinny? He's the best buy at only $15. More after the jump.

Indians stepping up social media initiative
In addition to the linked video, both Shapiro (@MarkShapiro) and Antonetti (@IndiansGM) are now on twitter. While I don't expect either to break any news via their accounts, I do expect them to be somewhat insightful and not a ghost account tweeted by an intern.
H/T to @craigcalcaterra on the video.
Update: Calcaterra details all the above at HardballTalk.
2011 Indians Promotional Schedule Announced
Two that I'd like to point out:
August 13th vs. the Twins: Mike Hargrove "Human Rain Delay" Bobble Head, Presented By Meritech | All Fans.
But easily the best, and the FO/marketing dept. deserves some credit for it. Basically, there's a Bob Feller Day, with a bronze statue giveaway. The best part about it? It's on the Fourth of July, and it's against the Yankees; no doubt how Rapid Robert would have wanted it.
Keith Law's Top 100 Prospect List (ESPN In$ider)
Cleveland Indians appearing on the list:
39. Chiz
56. Kipnis
60. Pomeranz
Appearing on Law's blog as top prospects just missing the cut is Alex White.
Mel Kiper's First Mock Draft (ESPN Insider$)
And with the 6th pick in the draft, Kiper says the Cleveland Browns will select....
OHHHHHHHH, you have to be an Insider. Pay up.
It was as if he had listened to one of Eric Wedge's speeches and was ready to run through a wall.
Zduriencik "embarrassed" by 2010
Quote is from Mike Salk, who sat down with Jack Z during the winter meetings. Something tells me I'll be paying more attention than usual to the Mariners in 2011.
King Felix wins AL CY Young; ShOcker votes Sabathia #1.
The SABR-nerd revolution continues.
Of note, BBWAA (sorry, no permalink available) lists all voters and whom they gave their #1 vote to. Ocker was one of 3 to list Sabathia first.
Glazer tweets Browns trade Jerome Harrison for Mike Bell
Props to Dorn for calling it in the Colt McCoy post.
Trading for another RB simply means it was a personal, not personnel, issue.
Zach McAllister completes Austin Kearns deal.
per twitter:
#Indians today acquired RHP ZACH McALLISTER from the NY Yankees to complete the July 30th trade that sent OF AUSTIN KEARNS to the Bronx.
22-year old, 5th in pro baseball, first full year at AAA.
BP Future Shock: House/Kipnis updates
# T.J. House, LHP, Indians (High-A Kinston): 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Over-slot 2008 draftee has been on a roll with one run and six hits allowed over last 19 innings; sinker/slider/change combo with all three pitches average or a tick above.
# Jason Kipnis, 2B, Indians (Double-A Akron): 2-for-4, 3B, HR (7), R, RBI. Officially entering super-hot mode by going 9-for-18 with double, two triples and home run in last five games and batting .337/.413/.554 overall at Double-A; passing Chisenhall on Indians prospect lists?
ESPN releases 2009 Vendor Inspection Reports
H/T to the post at Let's Go Tribe.
Cleveland Browns Stadium looks pretty good. And then... there's this:
Heinz Field
Pittsburgh Steelers
Vendors with critical violations: 61%
Inspection report excerpt: Inspectors found employees lacking in overall food-safety knowledge after observing one worker washing his hands with his gloves on. Another location had a gallon of milk that had expired 10 days prior.
2010 FB Outsiders Organizational Rankings (ESPN Insider)
Browns come in at #8.
Rankings based on players 25 or younger as of September 1, 2010. I'm not sure having young talent in the NFL is as much of an advantage as it is in the NBA and MLB. Nonetheless, it's nice to know there are reasons to be optimistic for 2010 through 2013.
LGFT: Father's Day edition
Asked what he was thinking as he rounded the bases, McDonald was painfully honest. From MLB.com:
"Probably the fact that I couldn't call my dad after the game to tell him."
it's a bit dusty in my office. should probably clean up around here.
Source: Nats target June 8-10 for Strasburg
More here at BP as to why they'll wait; obvious to most of us here, but in my opinion, an excellent layman's article that I wish was available to all instead of as BP subscriber access (preaching to the choir).
Why should we care if this is true? If he starts the Tuesday, June 8th game to kick off that series and the Nats give him the next available turn in a 5-man rotation, then I think I have plans for Sunday afternoon, June 13.
Wallace, Cribbs can spice up bland offense
Football Outsiders' Doug Farrar with an actual Wildcat play the Browns can use with Cribbs, Wallace, and Delhomme all on the field at the same time.
Note: I think Wildcat plays are more effective when an actual QB is also on the field. While guys like Ronnie Brown and Cribbs can throw, it's not the best use of their skills; the "threat" of them throwing is more dangerous.

Lewin Career Forecast
Since nobody around here cares to debate about the QB prospects in Thursday's draft, I thought I'd throw this one out there and reserve my comments until people have posted.
Fun Fact! David Lewin is not a middle-aged systems analyst burnout. He can't yet drink legally, yet currently does stats work for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Pitch Face!
from Lookout Landing via Doug Farrar's tweet.
There's one in here that should be dear to LGT's heart, and I'm not talking about Phifer.
LeBron files application for change to #6
This news has bigger implications than just marketing, apparel sales, etc.
When changing teams, a player can change his number at will. Is LeBron tipping his hand a bit, or just filing for the switch just in case?
Does this absolutely mean he' staying in Cleveland? Of course not.
But it does show he has serious thoughts about returning. If he had already made up his mind to leave, there would have been no reason to file for the number change.
Burying the Lead: ESPNChicago.com style
White Sox won't invite Thome to camp... blah blah blah...
Ken Williams gave Ozzie Guillen final say.. oh that's interesting.
Note enough at-bats available... okay I can buy that.
"He plans to use a rotation of Paul Konerko, Andruw Jones, Mark Kotsay and Omar Vizquel in the DH spot. "
Wha-wha-whaaaaaaaatttttttttt?
Rob Ryan Does Not Lack Confidence
"I will be a head coach in this league, and I will be damn successful, too,"
via the Rotowire feed on the left-hand side of DBN's front page.
